Meltz is reporting that the draft will consist of interpromotional matches, with the winner of each bout picking a wrestler from the loser's roster.

This, I don't like. It's basically an excuse for one roster - and let's be honest, that's gonna be Raw - to look dominant AND rob another show of talent, all at the same time. It removes the random element of the talent exchange and unbalances the number of superstars swapping shows. I hope for the best, but I don't think it's gonna turn out well.

If done properly this could work. Having Coachman berate a RAW wrestler, then said wrestler intentionally losing his match in order to jump ship etc. would provide intrigue.

I like it.
It gives all the guys on each brand a reason to stick together.
"Yay! Go win one for the team!"
And ofcourse a few heels a reason to bitch and be evil.

I'd assume not everyone that switches roster will be done that way though, but we'll see.

Great way to start/end feuds as well.

On SmackDown, they did make a point of saying that the Edge-Batista Vengeance match was going to be on regardless of what happens in the draft. So I expect Batista to go, and then you have a reason for Edge to get another sleazy win when SmackDown realizes that they can't afford to lose their belt to another brand.

Benoit getting rushed into a match with Edge also seems a tip that the Wolverine is moving to a new brand (as long rumored).

From Raw, Khali has been totally jobbed out and could use a move. And Umaga I would guess as well.

Hopefully they will explain the stips a little better, because why wouldn't another brand (kayfabe) draft Cena the first chance they get? I hear that Cena-Edge is scheduled first, so if they say that GMs can protect people by putting them in one of these matches, that would do.

Of course in a 3-hour TV show (with Mr. McMahon appreciation night taking a chunk of time too), we're going to get 6, 7 matches (draft picks) at most? So I'd also expect a trade/random switch period after the show to freshen up the midcard level.

And can we get The Hardys on the same brand?

I don't know if I necessarily like it.

dMp, I see your point, and if done properly like redsox said, I guess it could work. My only thing is that part of the thing that made the drafts so special is that element of surprise; that whole "who is it?!" atmosphere leading up to the big reveal. I just hope that they're not just going to have a guy win a match, have the respective rep from the brand walk out and say "we choose _____" and that's it. As long as they don't do that and kill any semblance of suspense (as much as you can have for a draft occurring two months after the brand split is rendered moot), it could work.

I also hope they provide intriguing enough match-ups. Like, I'd hate to see Randy Orton come out to face Balls Mahoney and immediately go "welp, RAW's got the next pick." Would sort of defeat the purpose of the whole thing.

A thought just occurred to me - for weeks they've been mentioning as they have in the past that tag teams could be broken up, even going so far as to take the titles off the Hardyz - I spell it with a Z becuz they're Team EXTREME~! - just so they didn't look like idiots (at least that's the only reason I can think of for prematurely ending that awesome program they had going with Cade & Murdoch in anti-climatic fashion). But if it's not going to be a draft lottery, and GMs are going to be choosing specific wrestlers - why would anybody, say, pick Lance Cade and not Trevor Murdoch (or vice-versa)? Or Deuce/Domino? Okay, nobody wants those two guys, but still.

Idunno. I'm just overthinking it I guess. I do at least appreciate that they're trying something different with it.

I would assume that tag team matches would result in two draft picks for the winners, which would a)mean that they could draft a decent amount of people for each brand over the night, and b)entire tag teams can be drafted logically. Which is something I guess.

I can also see Matt Hardy winning a match and drafting Jeff to SmackDown. The two of them together would be a boon for Friday nights - they can compete in the tag division, against MVP, against Edge, or even - in Jeff's case at last - against Chavo. Having those two together would be perfect for SmackDown. They're much stronger as a unit, even when wrestling as singles.

My question is: WHO gets to choose? The GM of the brand, or the winning wrestler?

If it's the GMs, I'm not really a fan of the idea in theory (but we all know it'll be applied differently). What's to stop them from drafting the same guy back and forth? Or picking the opposing champ with the last pick?

I could see a wrestler throwing a match to screw over "his" show, if they want to play the "I've been held down too long" card. Might make a decent angle. Either way, its better than Coach, Teddy Long and whomever represents ECW (I havent watched in ages) picking five guys and the rest being "done backstage".

Not sure if it warrants a separate thread (or if it even technically fits into this one), but there's an article up on WWE.Com where Tommy Dreamer actually makes some decent suggestions on which current ECW wrestlers should leave and which non-ECW wrestlers should make the jump to Tuesday nights. Can't say that I disagree with any of his picks.

I believe that a representative of the winning brand gets to draft a member of the losing brand by pulling a name at random. WWE does love bringing out the big Rumble number drums.

If you're Randy Orton in that match, why not lay down? If someone else gets drafted to Raw, that's one more person in competition for the title shots that you want. But if you lose, a Raw wrestler will go to ECW - that's one more guy you don't have to beat to get a title shot.

I could go for all of that especially making Stevie Richards something again. I'm not sure ECW get even half of that though, as I'm not sure if the show is really suppossed to succeed or not.

WWE did a poll on their website on what brand various wrestlers should go to.

The wrestlers that people supposedly want on ECW are: Edge, Marcus Cor Von, Elijah Burke, Randy Orton, Chris Masters, Rob Van Dam, Mark Henry, MVP, Umaga, Matt Striker, Snitsky, Carlito.
Raw: Lashley, Matt Hardy, Batista, Maria, Ric Flair, CM Punk, Kelly Kelly
Smackdown: Kane

There are a ton of guys where ECW is the leading voter which makes me think that...
A. There are a lot of ECW fans
B. Raw and Smackdown fans are voting crappy guys (Henry, Masters) to ECW so they don't have to see them (although that doesn't explain Edge)
C. WWE rigged the voting so that it looks like there are ECW fans and therefore they can justify moving some big names there.

Some fears dissuaded, courtesy WWE.com:

"The matches on tonights Raw will be interpromotional, and each match will affect the WWE Draft. The winning Superstar of each match will earn his (or her) brand the next WWE Draft pick."

So at least we know it'll still be random (in kayfabulous terms) picks.

So, in other words, the winner of the RAW (Cena) vs. Smackdown (Edge) champ. match will get the #1 pick in the draft tonight. Wow, I'm SUPER excited to see ECW tomorrow night now. Especially with McMahon holding the brand in such high esteem. /sarcasm

In the sense that the winner's brand gets the first random pick, yes.

Seriously, has anyone ever been excited to see the new ECW? Ever? It's Velocity with a worse roster on a worse network. It's a distant third to Raw and Smackdown, so why pretend otherwise?

Here's what I don't get then. The winner of that match will essentially have the task of choosing a potential new challenger for his title. So what incentive do either of them have to pick anybody good? It might be in character for Cena to draft Kane because he wants to take on all comers, but everything we know about Edge says that if he wins he should say "My pick for Smackdown is...Chloe the Dog!"

Of course, odds are the match will go to Cena or end in a no-contest, but the same principle applies to the other matches--in most cases the wrestlers don't have any motivation to do anything the fans would care about. Maybe the ECW guys might be putting the brand ahead of themselves, and the women and cruiserweights have nothing to lose by shifting some bigger names around. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
