Folks, we're a mere one week away from the 39th Canadian General Election! The minority Liberal government fell back in November, so now it's time to elect a new government! YAY!

Recent polling (as per Simon Fraser University):

Nationally (SES; Jan 12-14): Conservatives 38%, Liberals 30%, NDP 17%, Bloc 10%, Green 6%
BC (SES; Jan 8-12): Conservatives 39%, Liberals 31%, NDP 21%, Green 6%
Alberta (SES; Jan 8-12): Conservatives 55%, Liberals 27%, NDP 12%, Green 7%
Manitoba/Sask. (SES; Jan 8-12): Conservatives 42%, Liberals 30%, NDP 22%, Green 6%
Ontario (SES; Jan 12-14): Conservatives 37%, Liberals 34%, NDP 24%, Green 6%
Quebec (SES; Jan 12-14): Bloc 45%, Conservatives 24%, Liberals 20%, NDP 7%
Atlantic (SES; Jan 8-12): Conservatives 40%, Liberals 38%, NDP 20%, Green 1%

According to reports, Liberal Party insiders are basically throwing in the towel on this one. Rough estimates see a Conservative minority...at least.

Should be an interesting week.

Great. We might as well get used to calling the new leader of our government "Governor Harper of the State of Canada", because that's how things are going look around here when that ass gets into 24 Sussex.

So here's a question for all you Canuck W's....

Who do you vote for in your riding in the following instance?

The Conservative running is Jim Flaherty, former Ontario Finance Minister under Mike Harris. He has been the MPP here for three or four terms. All comments are that he was very good for the riding when his party was governing, but that he doesn't do much for the local people when asked.

The Liberal running is Judi Longfield, who has been the MP here for 3 terms. She has been a backbencher, who has never been one for the spotlight, although all reports are that when you need help, she will get you help.

The other people running are NDP and Green Party, but neither of them excite me at all and neither are expected to make any dent in the voting...

It seems that the Conservatives are going to win, which may make Longfields ability to help much smaller. If Flaherty wins and the Conservatives win, he is probably a Cabinet member of some sort. But he has never been all that helpful to the people of the riding...

I have voted for both of them in the past, because I do like what they have done for the area... I have never had to call on either personally, but the opinions expressed have been widely publicized throughout the local media.

So what to do???

My local Conservative candidate is Paul Francis.

I mistakenly wrote in Ron Francis...thereby giving the two-time Stanley Cup champion at least one vote in this federal election.

Thanks, Bullitt. You've done Canada a great favour. I only hope that everyone voting for the Tories can't remember the name of their candidate. :)

Wow, an election where you can't decide because you actually like the candidates. That would never work here in the states.

It certainly seems like it's been one error after another for the Liberal Party this campaign. I suppose it's the kind of thing that snowballs. The Conservatives have run a fairly tight campaign, and it looks like the NDP may gain some seats. I am pleased that the Conservatives stepped up in Quebec and are siphoning support from the Bloc Quebecois, despite what Buzz Hargrove says.

There are three races I'm following with interest: One involves an old friend from university stepping up for the CPC in a difficult Toronto riding; also, another old university buddy's mom is in tough defending her seat in Vancouver Centre; and, of course, I'm curious what happens to Belinda Stronach in Newmarket-Aurora, after she crossed the floor to join the Liberals last year.

If you're interested in seat projections, Democratic Space breaks down the country riding by riding. You can also go to CBC's Message Board, also divided by riding, to read the vitriolic comments made by voters (and, no doubt, campaign workers).

Sure can...I voted when I was up at the returning office visiting my Dad. The ballot had no names on it...you had to write it in.

I've never seen a ballot where you write in the candidate's name before. For new voters' information, this is the ballot you'll see on Monday:

With the recent downturn in Conservative support, it should be an interesting finish on the 23rd. It's being said that BC voters might be able to vote this time BEFORE having the winner called.

Goon,

When you vote by "Special Ballot", either because you had to change your voter registration information, or because you're out of the country, or for whatever reason, the "Special ballot" is simply a blank ballot that you write a name on and put in an envelope and then place in the ballot box.

I voted this way last week because I had to change my address on my information card, so, I'm guessing that Bullitt isn't making it up.

No, no-I didn't mean to imply Bullitt was making it up-the blank ballot was just brand new information to me. I had never come across it before.

I'm just shocked his write-in candidate was a guy who retired a member of the Leafs.

On a related note, a girl at my work was telling me earlier today that she volunteered at polls before, and she said you wouldn't believe the creative ways people spoiled their ballots-in the little circles, they would draw multi-coloured flowers, a skull and crossbones, the Star Trek logo, and other symbols. Other people have folded into their ballots a post-it note with mini-diatribes.

She also said it was the best part of counting votes.

Man, this is gonna be CLOSE.

For the record, I'm voting Conservative, despite it meaning I have to cast my ballot (for a second time) for Rob Anders. For those who care, CBC has a really swank Voter's Toolkit on their website.

To make things interesting for our American cousins, Michael Moore has made a statement on the Canadian election.

Personally, I think that he, as a foreigner, should mind his own business.

Well, I just spent 25 minutes on the phone with a Conservative volunteer discussing things about Anders. Still voting for him. He was 20 when he got elected in 1997, and understandably was in waaaaaaaaaay over his head and did stupid things as a result. Recently he's been kept quiet, more or less. And since Calgary West is gonna be freakishly close, I'm gonna vote for the Tories just in case the Liberals make it close.

Sadly, Michael Moore is right. We can do this right and avoid becoming an American vassal state by voting for the candidate in your riding that has the best chance to beat the CPC. A Liberal/NDP alliance will be miles better than any sort of Conservative government. I'm voting NDP in my riding, which is seeing a big upswing in support and has a chance of knocking out our Reform, er, CPC MP.

I won't really worry about the projected numbers as yet: if I remember the 2004 election, a Conservative minority was predicted, but we ended up with a Liberal minority instead.

But oh man, what a hyuuuuge margin in Alberta. I can't say I'm surprized with that, much less with the Liberal vote in Ontario.

Are we ready for Stephen Harper: Prime Minister?

I'm still stuck on who I'll vote for, but I'm probably going either Green or NDP. The only reason I'd vote Conservative is because Harper is the only one in the group who does NOT hail from the Eastern Time Zone...and it would be nice to have a Western Canadian as PM.

I'm voting Liberal. I'd rather vote for the party who has a lot more plusses in their column than for a party with a big zero at its head. Frankly, if a solid, Ontario-style PC was running (i.e. Joe Clark or even maybe Peter McKay) I'd likely vote Tory, but not while Harper is in charge.

My prediction? Conservative minority. If the election was next week instead of Monday, I really think the Libs would squeak it out again.
