I'm not just saying that because Ireland lost just now on kicks. Okay, I am. But still, I'm more in favour of them just playing until someone scores.
The Spain-Ireland match was great, though. Thoroughly exciting through the extra time. I'm guessing Italy will beat Korea to face Spain in the quarter-finals.

that mean that at LEAST 16 out of the 22 men on the field, PLUS ref have been running around for TWO HOURS...
i'm surprised they don't drop dead from exhaustion...
last world cup, i was thinking of 2 other ways to finish the game. every 5 mins, either remove a player, 1 by 1 from each team, until someone scores, or all the players have been removed.
or
same thing, but add players, until it's like 20 vs 20...one team should be able to score...
yeah, both sound crappy...maybe that's why they do PKs

But my main problem lies with Jason McAteer not being brought on in place of Kilbane and having him and Duff swap wings. I expected a miss from David Connolly to be honest but Mattie Holland and Kilbane surprised me. That was the first game to have ever made me cry. And I was in a pub with a piss load of people hugging me so I'm gonna look like a tool tomorrow. I am as smooth as a tramps undergarments when it comes to sporting emotions but hey, I care. | Zeruel

| #8 Posted on 16.6.02 2053.41 Reposted on: 16.6.09 2054.21 | Do you want to know a really stupid way to decide a game? Sudden death overtime in an American Football game. Team wins coin toss, team gets two first downs, team kicks field goal, team celebrates win. Stupid. At least play a full 15 minute overtime quarter like the good ol' CFL does.
I actually like penalty shots after 120 minutes of play. It is very entertaining and asking teams to play till someone scores would be very boring at the, say 180 minute mark. Exhausted players suffering from heat stroke walking around and desperately shooting from mid-field ... not entertaining. Removing players so that the most coveted prize in sports is won in a game of 5 on 5 sounds a little Mickey Mouse to me also.
The drama and tension of a man stepping up to the spot to take a penalty shot with 200 million people watching worldwide ... that is a moment in sports.

"We may as well break out a Scrabble board at centre ice, that's how little penalty shots have to do with hockey."
I do agree with Gavintzu on one point-that penalties are intensely dramatic. I couldn't sit down during the PKs yesterday. So, I suppose it makes for a good spectacle. I'm just uncomfortable with penalties deciding a match between two even teams. | Qubber
