It seems every season at least one form of WMD has to be used. Season 2, the nuclear weapon went off, albeit in an uninhabited area. Season 3, a deadly virus was released in a hotel. Season 4, a nuclear plant melted down and a Air Force 1 was shot down. Season 5, nerve gas released in a mall.
I'm not really clear on it, but how exactly does nerve gas work and is it not contagious?
So now it looks like the Yank that was coordinating things in the first 6 episodes can actually help CTU now. But Bauer is once again at odds with his superiors. You know, Logan asked Bauer to stay on, so Lynn really should just shut his mouth. As we expected, it looks like Lynn is going to be more of an antagonistic presence. He's effectively replaced Chappelle and Mason. Audrey is now the new Michelle.
I haven't seen last night's ep yet. But I had heard Kim would be back last night. Guess that rumor was wrong.
Big Show: Why is he getting the Intercontinental Title shot and not me? RVD: Ahhh...maybe 'cause you're a tool. Big Show: Look. I am 7'2". I am 500 pounds. I'm a giant. RVD: Oh ok. You're a giant tool.
Kim will be back for the super-duper March 6 two hour EVENT! Or so I'm guessing. At least they're bringing back William Devane as Sec. of State Heller to counter the fucktardedness of any Kim Bauer storyline.
Last night's episode was okay, but the recycling of events from previous seasons is starting to derail what had started off as a great season. Erwich (or whatever the hell his name is) is as great a strategist as Marwan was -- I'm looking forward to him watching CTU from a block away for the rest of the season. They do get points though from not recycling the conveniently placed sniper and/or conveniently placed bomb to kill a bad guy before capture. Oh yeah, did they consult Steven Spielberg last night, because the bit with Jack saving the girl at the mall was so incredibly manipulative and so not needed to further the story. What a weak 24 moment.
And to answer Vile1's nerve gas question, from what I understand most nerve agents can be absorbed through the skin. Not sure why the terrorists would be going after training nerve gas or whatever which apparently only works if somebody inhales it. Kind of weak, but it's 24, so whatever...

Thanks for ruining the spoilers that everyone else took the care to cover up...
I don't consider talking about something that's been mentioned a million other places to be a "spoiler." Especially when the places it's been mentioned are very public, such as on E!, assorted talk shows, and/or in TV Guide. Crying about that is like crying that Spielberg spoiled Jurassic Park for you by showing dinosaurs in the trailer...

Believe it or not, not everybody exposes themselves to those places.

I think "crying" is a little out of line and your comparison is weak.
The rule of thumb should be to play it on the safe side, and anything you haven't seen in a FOX trailer should probably go inside some spoiler tags just to be safe.

Got no problem with that. I do think the editing of the post was a little silly though, because there wasn't anything in the post that only an insider would know. It isn't like I said "Kim comes back on March 6 and the mountain lion from season 2 is right behind her, with Chase's other hand in it's mouth" or something equivalent.

Yeah I know. Judging from the end of season 4, I thought this season would've been truly different. It would've been about Jack on the run maybe from the Chinese or American government. Instead they went back to the status quo very quickly, and I am a little underwhelmed with it.
The formula is starting to get tired and its getting old. I feel that judging on what happens this season, season 6 should probably be the last one. Season 4 was the peak of the series.
So these guys are really mad at the Russians, but since they are here they take it out on us, I don't get that part. We don't have any big issues with Chechnya, I don't think.
The one major fault is that Lynn said he was certain that those terrorists would return to the hideout with the other 19 bombs as soon as they were let loose. I find that hard to believe. If organized, they would try to lay low for a few days after releasing one attack and wiat for orders, maybe even make a demand. They wouldn't return directly to their base, unless they were such a small group that the loss of those two foot soldiers would've crippled their operation.
The plots are much more linear so far this year, without 4 plot points advanced per episode. being said, it is still appointment television.
I think they pushed the "suspension of disbelief" factor way over the line with that Nerve gas in the mall thing. I mean Im not stupid, I know this is 24 and everything, but I just cant believe that anyone would justify letting the terrorists kill 900 women and children just so you can possibly keep tracking them. We already know the President cant make tough decisions but I thought they could have gone another way with that. Maybe have Buchanon and Mcgill at least argue it out for a few minutes. That was just oo much.

I don't think anything can even approach the mediocrity of Marwan's increasingly elaborate plans last year when it comes to suspension of disbelief. I can buy a government agency letting nerve gas be used on American citizens to try and track down the other 19 cannisters, more than I can a terrorist working for one of the largest defense contractors in the country stealing a computer override, kidnapping the Sec. of State, melting down nuclear reactors, stealing a stealth bomber, using a BOMBER to shoot Air Force One out of the sky so that he could take possession of the nuclear codes in the President's briefcase, steal a nuclear warhead, launch the missile at LA, and escape CTU agents dozens of times by using a conveniently placed flight of stairs all in a single day...

Their issue is that Walt Cummings and Nathanson tried to screw them by planting the explosives on the Nerve Gas. They see Walt as a representative of the government and get the impression that they were set up and betrayed by those who claimed they were trying to "help" them.
The main thread for this season isn't really a WMD in particular. It's about a botched covert government operation and the ramifications of using terrorism as a tool to combat terrorism, even if it is for good intentions.
In summary, Season 5 is about how Walt Cummings messed things up, and how Jack Bauer is going to clean up his mess.
I think the show is peaking ratings-wise right now. A large part of that is that they were successful last season by showing it 22 weeks straight and building an audience with a strong story (even if the basis was incredibly contrived, it at least had direction and an ending). Season 5 is very much a continuation of Season 4's story, which only helps (unlike Seasons 3 & 4, which hit the "reset button" on the previous seasons and introduced many new cast members). The new characters in Season 4 stuck (Curtis, Edgar, Buchanan and Logan are all compelling and/or cool in their own way), and there's still a lot more to come when Tony wakes up and Jack gets deeper into whatever's going on.
I think this is a much better plot than the Marwan thing. You'd think the terrorists would be happy with just killing the President in S4, but when it ended up being a trvial means to blowing up LA it just turned silly.
Thus far, the sweeps 24s have been a little disappointing. But, that's only because the first 6 hours were so great. I think it'll pick up again soon.

Plus, I think the Russians said that they can't get the nerve gas over to Russia now anyway, since the government will be checking all the ports and such. So they don't really have any choice but to use it against America.

All are good, but the suspension of disbelief clearly was shattered in the first episode of this season when Chloe got laid.

That can be easily explained by the fact that some guys will bang just about anything. Chloe getting some action is much more realistic than Edgar getting anything that didn't involve a 14 year old girl in Thailand...

You BOTH are asses. Chloe's hot!
I didn't say she's ugly. It just that I didn't have some sort of Dark Crystal fetish growing up...
