Interesting.... Harper was announced as an outfielder when drafted #1 by the Nationals.

Playing for the Nationals doesn't seem like such a joke now. Well, right NOW it does, but maybe not so much next season. Now all they need are some free agent pickups. I hear Manny Ramirez might be available.

Apparently the word on the Cubs and Dodgers taking such big reaches with their first-round picks is that both clubs were too cheap to pay a first-rounder this year. So Chicago took a guy from way off the radar in the hopes that he'll accept a lowball, below-slot offer, while L.A. took the guy who's a big quarterback prospect for LSU and might not even play pro ball. If he takes the LSU offer, the Dodgers eat the pick and get a supplemental choice in the first round next year.

Amazing to see how the divorce has totally turned the Dodgers into the Marlins or Pirates.

Man, baseball needs slotted draft salaries even more than the NFL does.

I'm trying to remember where I read this (I think it was Tom Verducci's (sp?) column last week on SI.com), but someone pointed this out. They said that Harper is still growing his body out and that could make it more difficult for him to stay as a catcher. The growth would alter how he plays defensively somehow. Also, they said that as an outfielder, he probably would last longer in his career as a power threat.

I think the column still vouched for having him as being a better option at catcher. It's just that it wouldn't be a total surprise if he ends up playing as an outfielder if/when he lands in the majors.

Baseball needs to do that and take about a million other cues from the NFL and NBA drafts. The MLB draft is all OVER place. It's nearly incomprehensible.

According to Peter Gammons on SportsCenter, the Marlins will send Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers for a package of six players, including Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller.
