Thanks a whole bunch, Bettman. I know the whole Saturday HNIC tradition MUST - MUST I TELL YOU - be maintained, but I sincerely hope that when* the Wings win the Cup in 5 games Nick Lidstrom busts you over that useless dome of yours with it.

*ok, fine, IF. Oh, and save the whole "Well, you won't have to worry about Game 5 of the Pistons series" jokes.

Woo. Woo. I wish I'd had the brashness to post my expectations for the last series, 'cause I really did expect Pittsburgh to roll Philadelphia with great malice. Detroit gives me significantly more anxiety. They're by far the best team we've played, although I don't think they've played a team anywhere near as complete as Pittsburgh either.

I'm rooting for Pittsburgh for obvious reasons.

Ratings!

(Sources: Varied and multiple - aka "whatever Google threw me")

Game 1 1.8, "over 2.3 million viewers"
Game 2 1.9, "averaged 2,537,560 viewers...most watched NHL telecast in the history of OLN/Versus" and second highest rated telecast ever (behind only Tour de France: Lance Armstrong's last ride, 7/24/05, 2.1)
Game 3 2.8 (Detroit: 18.2 vs. 15.9 for the Pistons/Celtics)
Game 4 2.3, "the first time Stanley Cup coverage has scored a primetime win since Saturday, June 9, 2001 (Stanley Cup Final Game 7, Colorado-New Jersey)."
Game 5 3.8, "average of 6.2 million viewers" - check out the ratings/share in:
Pittsburgh: 35.4/52
Detroit: 29.6/46

From the NHL press release (businesswire.com)...

So far, NBCs three-game Stanley Cup Final average of 3.0/6 is an 88% increase over last year (1.6/3).

Overtime certainly helps!

I agree with you there. I think a good change would be to guarantee the divisional winners a playoff spot, but not the 1-2-3 ranking.
