Hockey in fucking August ... the world just ain't right at the moment.
If I could fix me up a week of twilight hours we'd sit on the point and watch the sun continually flounder. Bathed in gold we'd plug into some kind of power and connect with those days back before all of this went sour.
I think the World Cup will be decent hockey. It won't be Olympic caliber because they're playing on NHL sized rinks and it's not nearly as important.
It'll be interesting because Canada is the favourite going in because you'd think the NHL ice surface would favour them more then the Olympic sized ice. They also appear to have the best team on paper but in such a short tournament, I wouldn't want to play Russia or Finland because Khabibulin and Kiprusoff can easily steal one game and knock a team out.
I'm probably most looking forward to that first Canada-US game in Montreal. Montreal has proven to not be shy about showing no respect to the US anthem so the atmosphere is going to be incredible. Canada/Russia in Toronto will be a throwback to 1972 Summit Series and a few of those Canada Cups.
I don't really think the Pools are even, though. Canada, US, Russia, and Slovakia in one pool. While Czechs, Sweden, Finland, and Germany in the other? I wonder how they decided that one.

Without looking too in-depth, I'd guess the thinking is some combo of Canada/US finishing 1-2 in their pool...therefore having the best chance to meet in the final.
I have to admit that the scheduling took real talent to fit ALL the games in between the end of the Olympics and the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement.
Color me impressed.
Are you a professional halfwit or talented amateur?
Like they said on the radio this morning, if you are traveling with the cup in tow, wouldn't it be strapped into the seat next to you. Pay for the ticket man, it's the Stanley Cup...
