Wow, Adrian Pasdar looked terrible as the Air Force Colonel. That hair and moustache... Its been a while since he was the handsome aspiring politician on Heroes...
So after last week's re-pivoting, this week we start to see all the pieces of Garret's plan come together. Raina and Quinn, each with their own projects, are like Evil Fitzsimmons, Ward is evil Ward (or is Triplett now Good Ward?) and Garret is Evil Coulson. That metal on his torso... is he going to turn out to be someone of note? I thought Garret was already ripped from the pages of Marvel.
I loved Coulson in this episode. I love that he still doesn't trust May fully. I loved his crisis of faith outside the secret SHIELD base, after leading his team because of a belief in the unseen force that is Nick Fury. I knew he would throw his badge and discover the base in a John Locke-ian fit of frustration. Now he finally has orders to keep a secret from his crew. They've already inadvertantly tipped off HYDRA. Lets watch Coulson slowly figure it out in front of everyone.
I kinda wish they ran with Skye's "Agents of N.O.T.H.I.N.G." and renamed the show. Still, at least they have their mission statement.
Evil Ward feels a little too "Evil." Stubble? Check. Smarmy smile? Check. I like how they set up Raina so he could explain what he was doing on the Bus all this time. If he's not really Grant Ward, who is he, then?
Patton Oswalt was fun as the only person not in the Captain America movie to know Fury's secret.
Last week I was worried that Ward's heel turn was just a feint set up by Coulson and Hand to infiltrate Garrett's operation. Now, given that Ward and Garrett have apparently been in contact this whole time and Ward has shot an awful lot of innocent Shield agents in the head...NOPE. Evil Ward is already about 100 times more interesting than Nice Ward, and perhaps we shouldn't be too shocked given the history of notable early cast shakeups in Whedon's shows. Ward is basically redoing the Angelus storyline right now, with Skye as a heretofore unwitting Buffy.

I just hoped that when he threw his badge it wasn't going to hit some secret switch and some snow would fall and they'd see the door. Thanks Marvel for only being half as cliche as that!
Coulson wasn't in the captain america movie, but he's dead, obviously.

I think the continuity between CA:WS and AoS match - so Coulson's alive in both, Cap just hasn't heard about it yet, and Coulson was off fighting a whole other part of Hydra (although he wasn't yet aware it was Hydra) during the CA:WS movie.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Hoo boy. I took a vacation from this show after the Coulson reveal episode, but the events of Winter Soldier made me want to catch up. So, I marathoned 6 episodes over the weekend. I was very pleased with them and with how things went down last week.
This week, however, felt like they were back to their awkward, early-season ways. The pacing was weird again. The line delivery was awkward. All the urgency was drained away as our heroes trudged through the snow in their adorable winter outfits. And, as much as I love Patton Oswalt, he seemed TOO goofy.
The biggest problem, by far, was last week's strong suit: the turns of Garrett and Ward. "Let's make sure the audience knows these guys are evil by making them act all mustache-twirling cartoon evil."
I'm not going to quit watching again or anything (there are only a couple episodes left), but this was a real limp noodle after three to four episodes of solid buildup.
The entire point of the episode was to make you frustrated. The frustration of Rhinna finding out the Clairvoyant was just a crocked Shield agent with some codes. The frustration of watching the real relationship Garrett and Ward had while destroying Shield from within. And Ultimately, Coulson's frustration having his entire world crumble underneath him.
I don't think this was designed to be the blockbuster earth shattering episode from last week. You can only do that once or twice a season. This was to get all the pieces in place for the finale. I do think Ward is walking into a trap. As of now, its still going better than Arrow which to me is falling into the same CW traps that Smallville had.
