OK, so I try to be funny sometimes, and throw a YouTube link in a thread. I realize that this can be good or bad and I'm probably not setting the best example when I do it for "Good Behavior" but I figure I can get away with it since I'm paying the hosting bill.

CRZ is against random YouTube posts and is much less lenient of them than I am. As he has just as much pull here as I do, you're probably going to run afoul of him doing what I do.

So - we are inconsistent - and I apologize for it. I'm probably going to get you "in trouble" if you follow my lead.

I personally think embedded YouTube videos enhance the site experience, and I'd like to know your thoughts. It's not gonna change anything probably, but I would like to know what the community thinks of them.

Personally, Guru, I am ok with them. I am much more likely to click on one in the forum than click on a link and follow it to Youtube.

I am not a huge youtube guy as a rule, so that is usually my only connection to Youtube

I had to check my post history to make sure I wasn't being hypocritical first. I post up a youtube about once every twenty-five or thirty posts or so, so I think I'm within fair use. Overall, I'm for it as long as a clear point can seem to be made (or if it is funny.) I think extra points should be given if there is written analysis of said video in the post.

I'm also of the opinion that if you're under a certain rating, you should be restricted from extras like youtube embedding or posting 45 times a day. Maybe that'll motivate some people. Or maybe it'll make the board even deader. What do I know?

There are some folks here - and I won't name names but to give you a hint, they post a lot of embedded YouTube videos - like several orders of magnitude more than anybody else - folks who seem to think that there's this great new site nobody has heard of called YOUTUBE and it is their goal in life to make everyone aware of it through the pasting of the most inconsequential, tangential, useless videos as responses to ANY thread - often times after they've already made a response in said thread, minutes earlier.

Those folks have got to stop. They've just got to stop. They are killing me slowly with their dumbassery and I can no longer be powerless to prevent it. I must USE my power to prevent it.

If you start a thread for the sole purpose of sharing a YouTube video, I want you to ask yourself TWICE if it's really that entertaining that everybody HAS to see it. For instance, if I were Aaron, you'd probably still see the Carl Sagan one, but I don't know about that hambone one. On the other hand, if Aaron were me, there's probably no chance in hell you'd get to experience the crisp goodness of the Pringles rap. Our diversity makes us great!

Shane's right, though - please include SOMETHING in the way of textual context when you post your video to let us know your thought process (or lack thereof) behind bringing it to the table.

EDIT: Also, use the "YouTube" tag if you would be so kind.

I think that's the key. Too often in the past there have been posts that just quote a source and say nothing of their own. Embedding a video with no commentary is no different than quoting a source or giving a link without any commentary.

I've always been leery of the rating system. Maybe I don't have the memory of other people, but I'm amazed at how low some of the ratings are for people who seem perfectly normal to me. The only people I've rated since the last ratings reset were those people that I didn't understand why they were rated so low.

Could we get a link to the acceptable html alternatives? I literally just thought to click on the FAQ to see if they're in there, but maybe a pop-up like the color chart? What does this have to do with the thread? The FAQ doesn't mention the youtube tags (though probably with good reason).

Sorry, what I am meaning to say is to use the YouTube thread icon (Or paste images/w/youtube.gif into the icon link box if it's not in the icon list for your forum) when you are starting a thread with a YouTube video. You can cut'n'paste YouTube embed code here with no trouble from the board software. I usually assign icons after the fact anyway, of course.

While the topic's up, and not to be a harping pain in the ass (even though I'm really, really good at it!), is there a way to make embedded videos appear as links when in dial-up mode? Images are linked but I'm not sure if that's because the image was originally linked or embedded.

Hmmm.....that's a good point. MAYBE. I'll need to research it and see if it's something easy enough to code. (Probably I could do something that will catch MOST of them but not ALL of them.)

Yeah, sometimes those embedded links can cause my old computer to freeze up and such. Not a big deal--I'm using an old computer, it's to be expected. But it's part of the reason why a link might be preferable to an embedded video.

And since the topic of ratings came up, I must say that it never in a million years would have occurred to me to rate someone. Perhaps I think of it in terms of Google Groups, which I use occassionally; the only time those ratings ever get mentioned on Usenet is by trolls. So if I'm somehow letting people down by not participating in this, my apologies!

Sudden idea sparked by this thread: For tv discussions, would it be good practice to include links to or embed the hulu feed of the show, or are we assuming you've seen the episode (or know how/where to) if you're reading the thread? (Of course, this becomes moot once hulu starts charging...)

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said...

I put some code in to try to trap embedded YouTube videos. It worked on the Flair promo, at least! Let me know if you see anything unusual or out of place if you're in Dial-up Mode. (thread or post number, please!)

He showed up when I threw "CRZ" into the graphical search engine, so I adopted him. It's just one of those things I occasionally do to confuse and annoy.
