Mark Zuckerberg. Yeah, I am sure it has nothing to do with the very financially successful film very very loosely based on him that is now getting awards left and right. If it were me, I would have put the Tea Party, the WikiLeaks guy or LeBron. Of course, this is these are the same people who threw a mirror on the cover and said "You" are the person of the year which shows how far off the Earth this thing fell.

Well, Zuckerberg also did create and runs this little thing called Facebook that 500,000,000 use so...

This is Zuck's second win as Person of the Year since he also won in 2006 when we are all Person of the Year. Congratulations to Zuck.

I can buy Zuckerberg as the POTY. Facebook has had a major impact on the world and (perhaps more importantly) I couldn't think of any other really outstanding choices. Assange might've had a chance had the Wikileaks scandal broken earlier in the year; it's still too early to assess the impact of that whole situation. The Tea Party and LeBron? No, come on.

If you don't think the Tea Party was instrumental in the outcomes of this past election and also responsible for Obama's public opinion numbers being way down, then you're being willfully ignorant.

Person of the year worthy? Maybe not in everybody's eyes, but they were/are hugely influential.

As for Zuck winning, he has influenced just about every person with internet access in one way or another.

I'm left wondering why this year for Zuckerberg. The only reasonable answer is "The Social Network," but that movie was not just about him and Facebook, its production was not in any way influenced by him, and in fact it really wasn't very flattering of him either. Just seems like silly timing. You could make him POTY every year if you put down "he made Facebook" as the reason.

The Onion has honored Zuck as one of the People Who Matter in 2010, an accolade far more worthy (and funnier) than what Time bestowed upon him.

Interestingly enough, Assange was the clear winner of the popular vote and he received more votes than the 2nd place (Gaga) and 3rd place (PM of Turkey) combined. Zuckerberg ran a distant 10th in the public poll.

I tend to agree with the public voting and I also have questions along the same lines as StingArmy. What exactly did Zuckerberg do *this year* to endear him as the POY? "The Social Network" being released this year doesn't exactly qualify.

I think this question can be answered with two questions:
1) How often do you check Wikileaks?
2) How often do you check Facebook?

Most people will answer as I do: 1) never been; 2) every day. Wikileaks may become more important in the grand scheme of things one day, but right now, this year, Facebook affects the average person's life a LOT more.

I'm Charlie Owens, good night, and good luck.

CEO,

I understand your point about Facebook's societal impact.. And not to belabor my original point, can you put together a list of things that Zuckerberg did *this year* to justify the award?

It's not like it's the Nobel Peace Prize or something.. it's the Time Magazine Person of the Year. The justification is "what will sell the most copies of Time".

It's not like anyone will remember it a month later. They could have sooner put an inanimate carbon rod on the cover and it wouldn't have made any difference to most people.

And if so - which half? I think its a fairly safe bet that this thread discussion went on longer than the actual voting discussion at Rhea County.
