You know it's the one.
Don't fake the flava!
Grab a chyron and GET SPICEY.

From the New York Daily News (New York's Hometown Connection)

CNN Headline News wants to get jiggy with it.

Get ready for slang phrases like "bling-bling," "flava," and "freak" mixed in with the day's headlines as the AOL Time Warner-owned cable network turns to hip hop lingo to rope in younger viewers.

"In an effort to be sure we are as cutting-edge as possible with our on-screen persona, please refer to this slang dictionary when looking for just the right phrase," reads an internal Headline News memo obtained by the Daily News.

"Please use this guide to help all you homeys and honeys add a new flava to your tickers and dekos," the memo continues, referring to the graphics that appear on the busy Headline News screen.

On the CNN pick list of hip hop phrases: "jimmy hat" meaning condom, "fly" for sexually attractive, and "ill," meaning to act inappropriately.

A Headline News spokeswoman said the memo was sent out by a mid-level producer to the attention of graphics writers and that top execs knew nothing about it.

Earlier this week, Headline News chief Rolando Santos told the San Francisco Chronicle that he is working slang phrases - "the lingo of our people" - into his newscasts.

The network, which went through an ambitious revamp, wants to grab the younger demographic of 18-49-year-olds who command the highest ad rates. In September, Headline News overtook GE-owned MSNBC in 18-49-year-olds for the second month in a row.

But some are bristling at the Headline News rap. "There's nothing more ridiculous than people trying to act hipper than they are," said Andrew Tyndall, editor of the Tyndall Report, which monitors TV news.

On Tuesday one of the headlines that ran in the bottom of the screen (the place where they run headlines... not the crawl at the very bottom of the screen) said "Buffy the Worm Slayer", and said that Buffy would be fighting a worm on tonights show. (I believe the text was "Buffy expands her horizons tonight.") Why would CNN advertise Buffy, let alone consider that newsworthy????

My slang uses (like many people's) pretty much froze in time at the end of High School (93). So it's a sad commentary that I recognized all of the slang words, and even I know that nobody under 20 has said "Fly" for 10 years.

Come on guys Headline News rules! it's my favourite. So many amazing anchors. From waking up seeing Robin Meade and having Rudi Bakhtiar as the overnight achor (yumm). Heck even Linda Stouffer is pretty nice in the afternoons... None of these women kick as much ass as Aaron Brown on the mothership CNN, but they do a good job and yes I don't mind looking at them while they are reading their teleprompter.

As for the little ticker at the bottom. I've noticed that for a while. They are really trying to be more hip and young with their stories and achors (see hotties above). And I've seen the play on words they use for the title on their ticker story like "Martha's cooked" on the Martha Stewart trading scam story and when speculation of Osama Bin Ladin's death they had the title "Bin La-Dead?" haha get it =) pretty clever

Damnit. When I read the subject of the thread, I was hoping Flava Flav was going to be their new desk person.

I had a huge crush on the evening anchor from about 10 years ago. Total hot socccer-mom. She died her hair al lot and I think her name was Lynn-something but I'm not sure. She was anchoring the same time the black guy who looked like a turtle was doing late-night.

Oh yes, forgot about her. And she *wuved* the Ramones, too. Almost enough to make me get up early.

And might I just say Laurie Dhue and Lynda Lopez, based on looks, are overrated? Lopez especially does nothing for me. Haven't seen either of them in action, though.

No, it's a pretty safe bet Lynne Russell would've whipped them all...she was working as a "Special Agent" and later a bounty hunter while she was on...

Fo sheezy.

But if they really wanna capture the 18 to mid 20 group they should just let Williams Street launch a cheaply flash animated news channel. Who would you prefer, Blitzer or Howlin Mad Murphy? And here's Meatwad with news on the NASDAQ...

Bah. Getting this back on topic, all they need to do is let the reporters and anchors talk on-camera like they do off. If they're anything like they are here at my internship (an ABC affiliate here in CT), they'd make things a lot more interesting. Not to mention expensive, once the FCC starts paying attention.

This reminds me of the SNL skit when Jimmy Smits guest hosted with all of the news anchors still enunciating their Spanish pronounciations off camera. Smits' character called himself "Tony" and Dana Carvey pissed him off by repeatedly calling him "Hhhhhhan-tonio." Good times.

The best part was when Bob Costas (or COA-stahs) came in the room and talked about the game between SAHN DEE-eghhhho and TAM-pa BAY!
