Excuse me while I pick my jaw off the floor.

"New Year's Day" does pick up "a minute" after season one ended. Who else was wondering when Robin had time to get a haircut and a new costume? And grow... taller? Then the kicker: 5 Years Later.

This was phenomenal. They promised new characters galore for season 2 and they weren't kidding. Wonder Girl and Batgirl vs. Lobo (speaking Interlac)! Tim Drake Robin, Beast Boy, Lagoon Boy, Blue Beetle, Bumblebee, Mal Duncan, Wonder Girl, and Batgirl are in The Team. Dick Grayson is Nightwing wearing the best version of the Nightwing suit I've ever seen. And apparently, Nightwing is in charge of the Team, refusing full Justice League status along with Miss Martian and Superboy. Hello! Megan and Lagoon Boy are a couple!

Meanwhile, Captain Atom is giving orders to the Justice League and the Team. Zatanna and Rocket are full fledged Leaguers. (I liked the use of the old Justice League series logo.) Plus G. Gordon Godfrey and Adam Strange appearances. And Catherine Cobert! A shout out character from the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League International!

Man, you get so busy just taking stock of where everyone is and who the new people are, you have to keep up with the speed of the episode: The missing 16 hours are accounted for as Vandal Savage sent Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, John Stewart, and J'onn J'onzz to Rann. Rann now has a ban on all Justice League members.

Batman may no longer be the drill sergeant to The Team, but when Nightwing assigned team leaders for Alpha, Beta and Gamma squads, he picked Bat Family. He ran Alpha, Batgirl ran Beta, and Robin ran Gamma. I call Bat-nepotism.

Blue Beetle is excellent. I really liked him bantering with the Beetle alien scarab. I also liked Lagoon Boy inflating into a super strong puffer fish. I imagine a fight with Bane, who does something similar when he balloons up from Venom, is in the future at some point.

Great callback at the end to the conclusion of the season one pilot when the entire Justice League assembled so you could gaze in awe at their numbers and sheer power levels.

But where are Aqualad, Artemis and Kid Flash?

Also, I know this sounds greedy, since we have Wonder Girl finally and Batgirl too, but... Someone's missing. Someone I really like. She's blonde, wears a mini skirt. Red cape. Has a red and yellow S on her chest.

See you on Rann next week.

EDIT: I figured I'd do this too:

Justice League roll call 5 years later:

Superman
Wonder Woman
Martian Manhunter
Hawkman
Hawkwoman
Red Tornado
Captain Atom
Captain Marvel
Icon
Rocket
Zatanna
Black Canary
Green Arrow
Plastic Man
Green Lantern John Stewart
Black Lightning
Batman
Aquaman
The Flash (Barry Allen or Wally West? Hmmm...)
The Atom
Dr. Fate (still Zatara?)

That's 21 Leaguers. There are supposed to be 26. Hal Jordan was name checked, he's a Leaguer. That's 22. Guy Gardner was also name checked, but did something change in 5 years to let him in the League? So four mystery Leaguers are unaccounted for.

Absolutely loved this too. The five years later jump was a pleasant shocking surprise.

No pick up (yet) of the Roy Harper storyline either...

What about Supergirl in those cute DC Nation mini-toons? Does she count?

Ah Mal Duncan was the guy I didn't recognize.

I loved this bit, also! That was one of the best moments of the pilot and it was great to see them go back to it "five years later."

I love the "five years later" bit and all of the questions that it's raised:

No pick up (yet) of the Roy Harper storyline either...

That's probably the most glaring of the plot threads that's been left hanging. Five years is an awfully long time to leave someone in stasis, not to mention...what happened to the clone?

I'm a little sorry to see the seemingly-unceremonious split between Superboy and Miss Martian and I'll be curious to see the blanks filled in there. And hey, at least that leaves the door open for Superboy and Wonder Girl. On that note, are the rights to Donna Troy tied up somewhere, because she's an odd omission.

The rest of the new additions all rock, especially the logical addition of the rest of the Bat-family. Somewhat odd that of all these heroes, there's no sign of Cyborg. Weird, given the heavy push in exposure that he's gotten over the last couple of years. The season's extraterrestrial theme makes me think we'll see Starfire introduced at some point later.

And yeah, I'm very curious to see what's happened to the rest of the team. In particular...wasn't Aqualad their leader? And now he's just GONE?

Hell, where's The Light, for that matter? The League was quick to point out what happened with Vandal Savage five years ago, but are we supposed to believe that none of those big bads have popped up at all in that entire time?

JLU once did a Godfrey-style character in a throwaway episode and nothing came of it. In the DCU, he's a Darkseid underling and I'll be interested to see if that's the direction they take this time around.

It's jarring to see such a quick transition and I'd imagine it's a result of not getting the normal layoff in-between seasons. And yeah, there's a good chance that the quality might take a hit, just because of how bloated the cast has become over the course of a single episode. But I am sold on this! 100% sold!

Since we've already had direct reference to Apocalypse and New Genesis, I'm thinking that we are going in that direction. The eventual reveal of Darkseid as the mastermind behind the Light could also be an interesting path, should they choose to go that way. He's certainly one of very few villains that you could use to keep all the others working together under him.

As much as I really liked this episode and it was nice to finally see a Blue Beetle on TV, I feel like a bit cheated by the time jump. We finally get Wally and Artemis together and they are gone. Roy's storyline seems to be moved down the line. And we don't see the evolution of the team to who they are today. I am sure we will get a flashback episode or two or five, but it just feels weird. Tim Curry as Godfrey is inspired casting. It has to be Darkseid at the end of this. Rann, we get fucking Rann and Adam Strange. Awesome.

It's getting harder to find English versions of this show on uploaded Youtube. But I found this one!

Easy explanation for where Aqualad, Wally and Artemis are? They're trying to find Roy. Oh, and you know Roy will be found. With this writing/creator team, it's going to happen. So while Waltemis and Aqualad try to find Roy, we get a few more plot lines. And all they need is something like Artemis showing up saying Wally's been captured and she needs help to find him AND Roy, and the chase is on.

BLUE BEETLE. Yes, Blue Beetle. W/ TALKING SCARAB. With the talking scarab.

Tim Drake using the staff? That's a nice little shout out to the comics.

Oh, and Lagoon Boy? Pure shout out to Brave and the Bold AQUAMAN, KING OF ATLANTIS. OLD CHUM. NEPTUNE'S BEARD. All that was missing was OUTRAGEOUS!

This series makes me very happy.
