In between the big event pictures, easily lost in the shuffle but worth seeing is Young Adult (backofthehead.com), the darkest comedy yet from Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody. Charlize Theron is pretty incredible here as one of the worst people you could ever meet.

SPOILERS in the review.

John and I agree on a film!

(I suppose that it is not that surprising. We also agreed on War Horse.)

I got all hoity-toity over the Xmas holidays and wrote a few thousand words about how all of Jason Reitman's protagonists (with the exception of Juno) have a similar tragic flaw.

I don't really consider the movie a comedy, but more of a dark character study. And a very good one at that. Almost a "Bad Santa" for women.

Plus it introduced me to the term "Kentacohut", which I had previously not heard before.

I think the moment that made it for me was when she sat down at her parents' kitchen table and announced "I think I'm an alcoholic" and they just blew her off. A true moment of self-realization where nobody close to her cared.
