Happy Valentine's Day! Hope you didn't really need your eyes.

Yikes! Did anyone else click on the almost-as-hideous jersey (cgi.ebay.com) available from the same seller?

I dunno. I think the Inferno jersey is uglier.

Upon further reflection, I'm torn. Maybe they're each perfectly hideous in their own way. I guess it's kind of like choosing which of your children you love the most.

Yeah, but we can blame a fan for that one. The Mudbugs jersey was one that the TEAM came up with.

One of these went for a bundle on eBay recently.

Or how about the Fife Flyers' road kit? (New and improved with yellow/orange, even.)

Actually, the blanks were designed by the manufacturer (OT Sports) and sold to teams in different leagues. The only fault you can lay on the team's doorstep is management's choosing that particular design.

How about this gem?

I'm not a big fan of camouflage-themed jerseys. But if you're going to do camo, why on earth would you only do HALF camo?

Probably because that was the only camo pattern jersey the manufacturer had in stock that the team could afford. Abilene was one of the poorer WPHL franchises - due in large part to playing in an arena in a dry county.

Alternate jerseys can be the life blood of a minor league hockey team in the sunbelt, with holiday, military/America honors, turn back the clock, local sponsors, and NASCAR themes. The rabid fans and businesses looking for a write-off will snap them up in a heartbeat...then later sell them on eBay for a fraction of what they paid to get them.

You missed my point completely. WHY did the manufacturer create this hideous half-camo design in the first place, instead of gluing the Aviators' crest onto a less-eye-mangling full-camo design? (I mean, I don't care much for full-camo jerseys, but at least they make a bit more sense.)

I'm well aware of the allure of minor-league jerseys and their moneymaking potential -- I own them from upwards of thirty different teams. I'm aware that many teams use similar base designs, particularly in smaller leagues and markets, hence the flurry of nearly identical last year's Christmas designs from the ECHL and ACHL and such floating around eBay.

But a butt-ugly jersey design is a butt-ugly jersey design regardless of who's buying it or why. It's a lapse of aesthetics on the part of the manufacturer, it's a lapse of judgement on the part of the team for selecting it, and it's frequently scorned by the fans who are meant to buy them. My local AHL team (the Phantoms), for instance, ended up blowing out a lot of their camo jerseys with clearance prices last year, while their Firebirds throwbacks and 9-11 commemorative jerseys sold quite well. Why? The latter two looked good, but just about every fellow fan I talked to shared my opinion of the Phantoms camo's color scheme -- it could kill cows at ten paces.

And this goofy half-camo design makes THAT one look good.

There's nothing wrong with having a jersey for every occasion. But is it too much to ask for designs that don't look like someone chopped up two completely different jerseys and glued the remnants together?

I kind of like the half-camouflage, myself.

Oh. Well, there's no accounting for taste in those instances, eh?

Speaking of camo patterns, The Laredo Bucks had jerseys last year made up in that brown woodland style - bizarre. If I can find a photo of it, I'll post it.
