Just putting up a thread so that Australian W's remember to check in. It looks like things were pretty nasty and it's still a few hours until daylight yet. I got a video from friends in Cairns at 12:50 PST last night showing the palm trees bending over as the first major part of the winds hit. Be safe.

If anyone is interested the ABC station doesn't appear to region lock its streaming:

Here's Yasi shown in comparison to various landmasses you might be more familiar with their size:

Big Arse storm for sure.
Reports so far say no fatalities which is great. More info will come out as rescue teams get to the more remote areas.

The township of Tully has been hit pretty hard.

They're expecting secondary storm flooding today.

The country's had a rough few weeks what with floods, fires and now a cat 5 cyclone.

They've still got a sense of humour up there thoughh36x2ygj

My question is how many people were running. I've read through the articles, but they only mention the kid and the former mayor.
