I watched the US vs China the other night and was fairly impressed with Yao Ming. After seeing that "pre-draft workout" video of him about a 1000 times on ESPN, I thought he was the next coming of Chuck Nevitt. He looked so bad in that video and they showed it non-stop, that I figured he had absolutely no game. His footwork is excellent, he's got a mature post game and a pretty soft touch. He'll have to put on some weight and he has to develop his defense (he was piling up fouls at an exponential rate), but I think he can develop into a top tier center. No match for Shaq, but who is? Anybody else see him?

He has the skills to be a top tier center in the NBA. The biggest adjustment that he will have to make is mental. Guys are going to get physical with him in the low post area and Ming is not going to get any calls. How he handles that pressure night after night and adjusts his game to the NBA style is the biggest key.

I agree that they're gonna go at him, but didn't seem flustered at all by the matchups with the US NBA players (O'Neal and Davis). I think he'll fit in well with Steve Francis, who'll make it his business to get him the ball.

No offense, but that's a joke right??

I know Stevie likes to jack it up non-stop, but maybe he's sick of going nowhere with the Rockets. He got his fat contract extension now, so that's out of his head. He can still take 25-30 shots a night while getting the ball to Yao Ming. If he doesn't, he can sit next to Barkley during the playoffs on tv again and yuk it up.

By getting him the ball do you mean letting him rebound missed shots?

If that's the case, and you throw in Mobley's 30 bricks a game, Ming should get the ball a LOT.

Yao reminds me of Ralph Sampson before the knee problems, he'll get pushed around by the elite centers, but he will be dominant against the second tier (which is most of the league).

Thank you Mr. Wanz for the check, now you get an AWA World Title Reign. But be careful, my boy Greg is a heat machine.

Ralph Sampson was a force. His skill level was incredible. He could run the break on the wing and dunk from the block. He could pull up from 17 feet and bury it. Playing forward had him out of the post bending his knees guarding other forwards. It put a ton of stress on those knees causing long term damage. Kevin Garnett is the only player with similar skills (KG's jumper is not as good). His potential greatness was untapped, but if you want to see what might have been, check out the 1985 NBA All Star Game. Ralph was MVP and went crazy with Magic throwing him oops from all over the court. The 1985 game also featured possibly the best all star starting fives ever.

West: Magic, George Gervin, Kareem, Ralph and Adrian Dantley
East: Jordan, Isaiah, Bird, Dr.J and Moses

He'll get dominated by Shaq, Duncan, and perhaps Mourning, but besides that he should be an upper level center within 2 years.

He'll be lucky to last as long as Shawn Bradley and if he can't stay out of foul trouble will mean as much in a game as Manute Bol. You can't dominate a whole lot on the bench with 5 fouls.
