The Yanks just acquired Pudge Rodriguez (sports.espn.go.com) from Detroit for.....Kyle Freakin Farnsworth. Unreal, I did not see this coming at all, not mentioned anywhere. With Posada out for the year, with Marte in the fold and the rest of the pen looking more solid than in the past, with Jose Molina closer to .220 than .240, and with Pudge being a free agent at the end of the year, this is wonderful for the Yanks. Krazy Kyle has been better this year, but in no way would he ever be trusted in a big spot over the long haul. Worst case, Ivan would be a class A free agent, and would net NY 2 high draft picks.

I guess Detroit is officially done? Why else trade a guy like IR for a guy like Farnsworth?

Rodriguez isn't really doing much at the plate this year. If they plug in Inge at catcher they get the same offensive production. Sure they lose some of the behind the plate prowess, but to get a good bullpen arm I think they can deal with that.

This helps both teams as they push for the playoffs.

Farnsworth makes sense for Detroit with Jones being yanked from the closer role and Rodney being an adventure. I don't think Pudge is much better than Molina at this point, as calling a game has never been a strength. I wouldn't trust Farnsworth in a big game, but he seemed to have pitched well without Torre around.

This deal just gets better for the Yankees, as Boston's about to trade itself right out of contention by possibly sending Manny Ramirez to Florida for who-the-hell-knows.

Seriously, if the Yankees make the playoffs AGAIN after spending most of the first half in last place, you might as well just pencil them in for October every year now, because it's looking more and more like they can start the season 0-60 and still find a way to make the playoffs.

Oh, and so much for those Detroit Tigers that all the kids (including myself) were crazy about back in March.

The Red Sox have waived or attempted to trade Manny about 472 times since he signed his contract prior to the '01 season, so I'm at the point where I actually have to see him in uniform on the field for another team before I believe it will happen. And, Boston has done a good enough job since the All-Star break playing itself out of contention by going 4-8 (3 wins against a Seattle team that quit around Tax Day, and a win against Sidney Ponson, who if 9 of us from the board showed up in Red Sox; or Yankee, uniforms to face Ponson, we would knock him out by the 4th).

I've been thinking the same thing, that I would have to see Manny in another uniform before I seriously bought that he was actually traded...though I do pray each and every day that he DOES get traded.

I am sure it will be an interesting day, at least until 4 EST, and out of nowhere, the White Sox (msn.foxsports.com) appear to have a deal in place to get Ken Griffey Jr. Where is he going to play, and who is he going to take time away from? Maybe Chicago turns around and deals Quentin in a trade for Huston Street, who they're rumored to be very interested in?

There is no way on earth they deal Quentin for Huston Street. They're not trading a guy who if the season ended today would be in the top 3-4 of MVP voting for a guy who would be their 8th inning relief guy (since they're not taking the job from Jenks anytime soon).

The Griffey thing leaves me scratching my head though. We already have a lot of low average veterans on our team.

Except, the Yankees would have to offer Pudge arbitration and Pudge would have to turn it down. I think Rodriguez would do better in a one year arbitrated deal than he would get on the free market at his age and position (he's getting close to done) and the Yankees can't afford to take offer him that sort of deal unless Posada is gone.

The Griffey talk makes me think the White Sox probably wish they tried to play Thome at first (or maybe that he still had the ability to do that.) Swisher in CF, Thome at 1st, Griffey at DH, Paul K benched would work out okay, but that doesn't seem possible. It's odd to go after a guy who only should be playing corner outfield or DH when 3 of your top 4 hitters are corner outfield and DH.

The sad thing about this whole thing is it really took away ESPN face time from Doug Flutie who made a hell of a grab for a foul ball. The man needs a contract this year ya know.
