I'm not sure how I feel about this trade. The Mariners aren't built to win now, so if they are going to trade one of their stud pitchers why wasn't it Felix? Keep the cheaper arm and get the bigger haul.

You are assuming someone would've given up the bigger haul. This was a lesser-risk move for the Yankees, for sure. The only upside form the M's point-of-view (IMO) is the potential that Pineda will break down.

I hope they didn't just do this trade based on the worst possible outcome.
I don't think Monetro will be a bad player, but when you have a pitcher that is young, cheap and with sky's the limit potential. You really have the ultimate trade chip. Maybe there are more moves, because that lineup has been embarrassing the last couple of years. I've been really surprised by the Mariners lack of movement up until this point.
Part of thinks the Mariners could've gotten much more for Pineda if they'd made him available, but I like this particular deal for both clubs. What a blockbuster. If both guys live up to expectations, this deal will be talked about for decades to come.
If you're Seattle, I can definitely see the logic. You have a bunch of good young pitchers in the pipeline and you can surely attract free agent arms who want to throw at Safeco Field. Bringing a free agent batter to Safeco, however, is a fool's errand. Better for the Mariners if they can get a quality young bat in a trade since that's basically the only way they can upgrade their hitting.

The Mariners are pulling a lot more upside in this trade. First off, Pineda might have been an all-star, but he was 9-10 with a very average 3.74 ERA in a pitcher's park (granted, the record also goes to the lineup's performance). Montero, on the other hand, should be solid enough to knock a few doubles in SafeCo at the very least.

Morneau: 4.9 Wins Above Replacement Cabrera: 3.2 Wins Above Replacement [fangraphs] Morneau's .447 wOBA is slightly better than Cabrera's .440. I'll just concede you this one and call them basically equal in terms of hitting value.
