Is there a good compilation of XTC that would have the following:

Making Plans For Nigel
Senses working Overtime
No Thugs in Our House

As well as the more recent stuff and the Dukes of Stratos-whatever?

George Washington gave his signature
The Government gave its hand
They said for now and ever more that this was Indian Land

"As long as the moon shall rise"
"As long as the rivers flow"
"As long as the sun will shine"
"As long as the grass shall grow"

Upsy Daisy Assortment (click for the track listing) has the first three songs you mentioned and is a very good compilation cd that I am proud to say I own... nothing from Dukes though.

There's also a UK-only 2 CD release called Fossil Fuel which has the same three songs you listed, but again nothing from the Dukes Of The Stratosphere disc.

I have never, nor will I ever see a vending machine that was all Milky Way.

The Coat of Many Cupboards box set had outtakes and demos from the beginning up through Nonsuch with one or two Dukes' songs on there, but they're in demo, outtake and live forms, which you're probably not looking for at the moment. I'm pretty sure there's no normal compilation with both Dukes and regular XTC stuff on it, and I'm not sure that any compilations go past Nonsuch.

Other than recommending the full albums (especially Black Sea, English Settlement and Drums and Wires for the songs you mentioned; Skylarking and Nonsuch for just being great and if you're into some of the Dukes sound), Upsy Daisy has what you want from the regular XTC stuff. Of the two newer albums, I also liked them both a lot. I guess Wasp Star would be the easier of the two to get into. Both Wasp Star and Apple Venus sound more like the Skylarking/Nonsuch stuff than the earlier albums, if that matters. And both Dukes of Stratosphear releases are collected on CD as Chips From the Chocolate Fireball, which I really love.

I love love love the Compact XTC (allmusic.com) which is a really smart concentration of everything up through The Big Express, a perfect ending point for one disc. I don't know if it's in print anymore. Fossil Fuel looks like a best-bet to cover everything pre-TVT, and it's even got "Respectable Street" on it, which is always a plus.

The Dukes compilation is an absolute must-have. I can't recommend those records highly enough, they're absolutely perfect.

The only thing I enjoy more than doing the crossword puzzle is actually finishing it.

Somewhere, I have the 12" of "Vanishing Girl" which is among the few perfect pop songs ever made....I just want more!

I will also check eBay maybe I'll get lucky.
