So, my untech ass has an xbox now and I want to do the windows communication thing. I have Windows Vista and Windows Media Player 11, but I can't get the XBox and that to jive. What is this Windows Media Center they keep talking about and should I have it? Everything is connected through a wire based router, I just can't seem to get the two to do what I want. I just feel like I am missing a step here somewhere, and I've done a lot of looking up of answers, but none of them make much sense.

Edit: Is it possibly the router I just hooked up?
I also tried turning off Windows Firewall and still nothing. The only place the XBox shows up is when I do a network map in the control panal, but it's not one of the sharing options.

I have that problem too. I suspect it is my router but I have never gotten it figured out. I am not sure what the Windows Media Center is as I do not have Vista but you should be able to just use WMP 11 and do it that way.

You have to turn on Media Sharing first. Go to the Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel. Under Sharing and Discovery turn on Media Sharing and set the options. That way your PC' files are shared, but also it can now find other devices that are out there like the 360. Next time your 360 goes online it should show a notification in your taskbar on the PC and walk you through setup.

Yeah, that's the problem I'm facing. That's all done and set. It's one of those things that's not a huge deal, but since it is capable of doing it and since I have wasted so much time on it it has become frustrating.

When I view that sharing page it shows

PC - Network 3 - Internet

When I view the full Map it shows

PC --- switch - gateway - internet
. . ]
XBox-

This is the only time I have been able to see the XBox on this PC

Try going to the website for the 360 and checking there. I'm pretty sure there's something you have to do on your PC to allow for it to happen, perhaps downloading a certain file. Microsoft's site should detail exactly what needs to be done.

And you've added whatever folders you want it to share from the PC? Have you gone on the 360 to the media center set up page?

The only problem I ever had was not realizing that some of my music wasn't showing up because it was in that stupid iTunes protected format. Fixed that easily though. :)

It's been kind of a strange thing all around actually. I called the line today, and the guys seemed to know less than people online. I have Windows Vista Basic but no Media Center it came with Windows Media Player 11. This seemed to throw them off and it made me wonder what I bought with this computer. I just decided to set my firewalls and sharing back to normal, and I will download stuff on the old fashion way.

I think you can just plug an MP3 player into the 360 directly to use the music on it.

I think.

What sizes and types of rooms do you use it in? I've read some negative reviews basically saying that if you don't have a big living space, it won't really work. Also, I've read that if there's too much sunlight, it isn't playable.
