I bought an original Xbox on Craigslist last night. I was thinking about turning an old laptop into some kind of media center deal, but then I saw an article on Lifehacker about XBMC and remembered how well it had worked on my old Xbox (which I traded for a moped abut a year ago). I also priced out the cost of a VGA to Component converter versus an XBMC rig. The converter is north of $120, and here's what I had to buy for XBMC:

  • Xbox - $50
  • Xbox DVD remote - $10
  • Preowned copy of Splinter Cell - $2
  • Component cables for Xbox - $0.77
  • Xbox action replay - $27.44
  • Shipping for the last two items from here - $13.25
Total: $103.46

Not bad, especially considering the level of functionality you get out of XBMC. Lifehacker has a really great tutorial on performing the softmod. If you've got one of these boxes cluttering your closet, I strongly recommend it.

I do have an old Xbox. And I would like to do this, as I have played my Xbox a whole one time in the six months that I've had it.

Well, the Lifehacker walkthrough is very thorough. About all you really need to know how to do is use FTP. I've done it before, so if you get stuck, PM me and I'll try to help.

Where'd you get the componet cables for $.77? I can't seem to find these. I tried to buy some yesterday, coincidentally, at a Hollywood video in Hillsboro. The guy there said "I wasn't really around for the X-box."

I think he was saying "Get out of the game store, old man."

Here's the product page on the website I bought them from. They seem to be $1.77 on there now, but my invoice said $0.77. I actually left the shopping for the component cables & Action Replay (the two things I couldn't find in EB or on Craigslist) to my girlfriend. She did a pretty good job. Can't wait until the stuff arrives.

CORRECTION: Apparently you have to search on that site for them...they're on there four times with four different prices. Here's the 77 cent one.

Source. You should probably go get it. It's worth creating a Steam account for if you don't already have one.
