If you haven't tried the controllers out, go down to Target or whatever the equivalent is where you live and play with them side by side.

In my opinion, the PS2 (and PSOne) controllers are the best out there right now. The XBox controller is too big for my girlfriend to use. I'm ok with it - but I have big hands. The Game Cube controller is just silly.

Depends on what sort of games you want. PS2 has the most games, but graphics that pale to the GameCube and X-Box. X-Box does have good games, but most of them are either out for the PS2 or coming to the PC soon.

Guru Zim's also right about the controllers. The Ps2 controller is a good fit for most people's hands, the others can be quite big for some. And if you want the machine to play DVDs for you, it would be better to look into a DVD player. The playback's pretty good, but not really why you'd want to buy a PS2 or X-Box for.

My preference would be the PS2, but either one is nice.

Go with the PS2. X-Box, obviously, has the best hardware, but it doesn't matter if you don't have good software to go with it. PS2 has GTA3, MGS2(not really a good game IMO, but the majority seems to love it), FFX, NBA Street, GT3, Devil May Cry, etc

While the X-Box has...uh...well..nothing.

Oh, and, as far as the controllers, IMO, Gamecube is the best. With the exception of the awkwardly placed Z button, it fits like a glove.

Given those two choices, I'd go with the PS2. It's all about the software. Nothing on the X-Box comes close to exciting me.

RAW on X-Box? Your guess is as good as mine. It won't be the same as SmackDown!, but does include the highly-touted "fighting through the crowd" feature. Eh.

PS2 would probably be the best choice for a console, it's going to have alot of support and already has some great games out (GTA, MGS2, Devil May Cry, etc.). X-Box has Halo, which totally rocks, but it's not worth a 300 dollar purchase (and I hear it's coming to computer anyway.) Gamecube has some decent stuff, but it's going to be a while before it gets any blockbuster titles.

Go with PS2.

I've seen the X-Box, but I can't say I've been impressed by the games all that much. The PS2 has a large library, with pretty much every genre imaginable (Finally got a worthwhile RPG with FFX). I'd go with that first and foremost.

Hell, I'd recommend the Gamecube over the X-Box. It's cheaper, and while it has a small library of games now, Nintendo always has blockbuster franchises (I'll take Metroid Prime over Halo any day of the week). It's a wait and see deal with either case, but the Gamecube is the safer investment. Not to mention Wrestlemania X-8 for it looks sweet, and Yukes is using a completely different team to make it (including from what I hear, some former AKI members, responsible for the famed World Tour engine).

It's personal preference, but those are my recommendations.

This thread is the embodiment of what I hate about videogame fans. I can't tell you how many times working at EB some 18 to 25 year old male would come in and ask me whether he should buy the X-Box or the PS2. I would then proceed to go down the list of Gamecube advantages, and PS2/X-Box disadvantages. It's long. You were warned.

GC:

It's portable
Shigeru Miyamoto works for Nintendo, and he's a fucking genius
New Mario game
New Zelda game
New Metroid game
New Starfox game
New Perfect Dark Game
AKI is developing a GC wrestling game
Miyamoto
It's $100 cheaper than either the X-Box or PS2
It's built like a fucking tank
The controller LOOKS silly (looks, Guru), but it actually fits perfectly in your hands, and the button layout is extremely logical
Load times are practically nonexistent
If you're too much of a man to have a purple game system, it comes in black
It's about half the size and weight of either of the other two systems
The game discs themselves are small and cute
Miyamoto
Nintendo intends to fully support this console for at least 5 years (Sony is looking to have the PS3 out in about 2 years)
Graphics are maybe a hair under the X-Box's, and way above PS2's
Sega is putting out an assload of GC-exclusives
Resident Evil is now GC-exclusive
Game Boy Advance links up to Gamecube as a controller (Remember VMU playcalling in NFL 2k2 for the Dreamcast?) or for other features (Chaos in Sonic, other shit...)

PS2:
LOOOONG load times
Piles and piles of shitty games (Oni anyone? Fantavision???)
They break ALL THE FUCKING TIME. VERY cheaply made.
DVD function is crappy, and redundant if you already have a DVD player
Subpar graphics in comparison to the other 2
You need a multitap in order to play with more than 2 people
No Miyamoto

X-Box:
Controller is a giant black plastic hunk of shit. It was designed for someone with 10-inch-long fingers. The buttons KILL your thumbs after 10 minutes of playing, the layout sucks, and it's got this big functionless round thing in the middle. The one good thing I can say about it is the 9-foot breakaway cord
Playing DVDs will cost you an extra $40. You NEED the DVD remote to play movies
Uninspired games. They're pretty, but they're boring. So far, anyway.
Prone to overheating
Weighs more than you do
Hard drive makes the system extra-fragile
No Miyamoto

I could go on, but I have a fucking headache. What it boils down to is this: Don't decide what system you want, decide what games you want. If you go and buy an X-Box, and find that you don't like Amped, Halo or a 2-year-old Tony Hawk game, then you've got yourself a big, heavy, black and green doorstop. And don't rule out a system before you've played the games. (Super Monkey Ball and Super Smash Bros. in particular.) Now if you'll excuse me, I bought a Sega Saturn yesterday, and I've got some Daytona USA to play.

I wouldn't go that far. The PS2 has more good points than bad. Yeah, it has Fantavision and Oni, but it has GT3, GTA3, FFX, TM:B, etc. X-Box has, well, I personally am not impressed by it, so I won't go there. Ask someone who enjoys the system.

The only bad thing I see about the Gamecube is that it looks to be a long damn time til any decent RPG's come out for it. Then again, it's the same with the X-Box. Of the two new launces, the Gamecube has the most franchises.

Still, it's all preference. Right now, the PS2 is easily the best bet. The GC will be good in the future, but most of the things you mentioned simply aren't out yet.

But you work in EB you say? Then I have a question for ya. Which is selling more out of the Gamecube and the X-Box?

Well, I just actually quit EB yesterday...I have a real job now ;)

Anyway, from what I could see, X-Box and GC are running about neck and neck. Microsoft was really good about keeping their system in stock, whereas Nintendo was having a bit more trouble keeping up with the demand.

While it's true that most of the Cube's big games aren't out yet, the games that are are GREAT. Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball, Smash Bros., and Luigi's Mansion are all a ton of fun. Of course, the PS2 does have more good games, but the thing's been out for more than a year now. I should damn well hope it has more good games than a 3 month old system.

The lack of RPGs (specifically Square RPGs) on the Cube is a bit of a pain in the ass, but I think it's a small price to pay for all the goodness Nintendo is giving us. As for X-Box RPGs....well, if I wanted to play Diablo, I would. On my PC.

"Playing DVDs will cost you an extra $40. You NEED the DVD remote to play movies"

I used to use this arguement against the X-Box as well, until someone made me think about it differently.

X-Box has a built-in hard drive, so you don't need memory cards. The $40 you spend on making it able to play DVDs is around the same you would spend on memory cards (or less, depending on how many games you own) on the other systems.

And, speaking of memory cards, that is my biggest complaint about the Gamecube. The memory cards are pieces of shit. They don't hold anywhere NEAR the information of the PS2 cards.

Nintendo (well, actually Panasonic I think) is coming out with a 64 meg memory card, which is equivalent to 8 PS2 Memory cards.

Granted, it's going to cost out the ass, at $99 from what I heard, but that's still a good deal for how much memory it can hold.

How big is the Box's hard drive?

Well, yeah, eventually there'll be huge Cube cards out, but that doesn't do anything to help me now. It literally got filled up with the save info from FOUR games.

Smackdown is the only PS2 game I know of that can top that(why the HELL does that thing take up 4 megs of space?)

The X-Box hard drive is 8 gigs, and, if there were any good games for the Box, I'd think about buying it just because you can rip your own songs to the hard drive, and make your own soundtracks for games.

8 gigs? Shit, that's only 1.7 gigs less than my computer. That might be good if I ever end up getting a Box. Right now though, I'm definitely leaning towards hell no. For now at least.

I only have two Cube games currently (Rogue and Madden), so my two cards are more than enough for now.

And Smackdown takes up 4 megs because it saves everything onto it. Any variations you do to wrestlers movelists, the 12 CAW slots, all the secrets, etc. It's all saved onto one big file. I heard something about it being easier this way, because if CAWs were saved to a separate file, they couldn't be accessed by the game for Royal Rumbles and stuff like that.

Fuck Smackdown, yo. The upcoming AKI wrestling game, be it WWF-licenced or no, will rock your collective socks off.

So basicly, if you really want to go with what people on here think...

Pick somebody at random.

OR.

Take your happy ass down to Blockbuster, put 15 bucks in their hands, and rent a system. Tack on a few games and get outta there for under 30 bucks.

If you're cheap, hit the kiosks as Guru suggested.

Let me say, that if *I* were working for a store, I'd point out positives and negatives for each system. In the middle of that Gamecube propaganda, nowhere did I see what happens when the customer asks "So, where are all of these "new" games? I'd like to have something to play." Followed by the awkward silence. And the words "Nintendo intends" just don't hold a lot of weight with me anymore. Try telling buyers about Nintendo withholding machines and games from video game magazines, virtually destroying a good chunk of pre-release buildup for a game.

And yeah, let them grab the controller first. I don't know whose hands the GC one feels right in, but it ain't mine.

WHY'D THEY FUCK WITH THE N64 CONTROLLER?

If I were going to suggest a GameCube, I'd do the customer a favor and say SAVE YOUR MONEY. Buy one later. Same with the X Box. If you talk about pushing systems based on games, then hard-selling somebody a GameCube RIGHT NOW only on games that won't be out for months maybe even a year is doing them an injustice.

Wanted to comment on Fazzle's X-Box hard drive comment- I thought it was a great idea as well. Turns out some of the developers are dumbasses. In the new Raw game, you can only save 16 guys to the X-Box HD, rest go on memcards. (Which is why they sell the X-Box memcards for 35 bucks, natch.) It's obviously not for space reasons... maybe it's for X-BOX SHIT MUST BE BOUGHT EVEN IF IT MAKES NO SENSE reasons.

I bit the bullet and got a PS2. Right now, the library can't be matched. There IS something for everybody. But it ain't gold. There are the load times, though FFX almost entirely did away with that. In a year, when the X-Box and GC move into 2nd generation stuff... forget about it. Some of the PS2 will look a lot like shit next to what they should be able to do. Ideally, I'd have all three, because I want to play Halo, and am holding out faith for WM18 on the Cube. (So YOU should buy all 3! That is THE answer.)

But that's just what I think. Just as valid and biased as everybody else's opinion. Like I said, go rent the systems and save yourself a couple hundred dollars of potential heartache if you don't like what you see.

Or go read the much more responsible thread we had about this back on the old slashboard... link below.
