Here (mercurynews.com) is a review of the current list of rumours surrouding the next generation X-Box. Of note are the claims that it won't contain a hard drive, won't be backwards compatible, and several features are contingent on what Sony announces for the PS3. They say it will be ready in Fall 2005.

Here (teamxbox.com) is a site that expands on the above report. If I read them right, they are claiming that the hard drive won't be necessary due to PC connectivity, it will be backwards compatible through emulation, and the features are not as Sony dependent as it would appear. They also expound on how the X-Box will be able to provide HDTV quality graphics.

I can only wonder why Microsoft is waiting on PS3 details when they plan on shipping what would appear to be a year ahead of them. (Most reports put the PS3 in 2006.) The next few years will be fun ones indeed for us fans of the console wars.

Rumors are also flying that the Xbox will see a $99 price tag soon...

I heard it wont be backwards compatible because of use of the mini disc system (like the gamecube). I think this is a mistake because people now buy consoles as an entertainment center. They want something that can play DVDs and CDs as well as games, therefore mini discs are a bad move. I also think that not including a hard drive may be a mistake as well. That was one of the advantages the xbox had over the PS2, you didnt have to buy memory cards. And the whole PC connectivity is kind of lame, because in my case my xbox is nowhere near my computer, and I would imagine this is the case for a lot of people as well.

But you aren't thinking like Microsoft. They made X-Box live require broadband when it debuted in 2002 (or was it 2001?), and now almost two years later broadband is still on the cusp of mainstream acceptance. Right now wirelss technologies are starting to take hold. There's already plans for a MS Wireless bridge for the X-Box (I don't know if its out yet). By the time the X-Box next debuts in eighteen or so months, I'm sure enough houses will have wireless networks (at least, as many as had broadband previously), that MS will feel its a good investment.

Actually, I don't remember seeing anything in those articles about what types of network connectivity would be included. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of WiFi built-in.

Frankly, while the hard drive seems useful, I'd rather it remain a peripheral so long as it makes the system cheaper. Then again, the system's price probably won't change regardless of what features are included, so its probably cheaper for consumers if they do include the hard drive. Of course, I don't currently own or want an X-Box, so my preferences might be different from that of the X-Box community.

Yeah, this is just a sign of how bad things are going for the X-box in my view. They have slipped in sales while the Gamecube went up. Really it's those two against each other cause Sony is too far ahead. They could drop the price to $99 but the money loss would be amazing. They can afford it, but it's a bad sign anyway.

And releasing the next gen console first...almost always a bad idea. Ask Sega. I have a feeling this launch will be delayed and delayed until they do know what Sony is coming with. To do it any other way would be dumb.

The hard drive is a must in future systems I think, so I don't see why they would not put one in. Mini-discs, well I don't see the harm in that. It certainly helps curtail piracy.

Just keep this in mind - no one reports when a PS2 comes out of service, or just plain stops working. Sure, they sell a lot of units, but I'm guessing at least 10-20% are replacements just from the experiences of people here on the board.

Here's an article from GameSpot that debunks a lot of the rumors flying around about video games. Sounds like there's a good chance of a price cut on X-Box but not necessarily down to $99, and the claims that X-Box 2 will come out next year are completely unsubstantiated.

I have a feeling that if they do drop the price of the X-Box, it won't be until several months after Fable is released in March. Fable may be the "killer app" Microsoft has been looking for, if it even lives up to half of the hype.

The reason why the next Xbox most likely won't be backwards compatible is Microsoft is using different hardware suppliers. Instead of Nvidia, they chose ATI for their graphics chips. And instead of Intel, they are using the same processors for Apple G5s. Different architecture will make it difficult to run/emulate current Xbox games so I don't think they'll try.

It's not true that they'll be using minidisks. People (including myself) love to use the Xbox as a DVD player. I'd hate to see Microsoft drop hard drives for the next system, b/c it is very practical. WiFi will most likely be built in the next system. Microsoft is keen on connecting all of your electronics together inside the home.

A while ago I was at my local EB, and talking with the sales clerk about the latest games. I mentioned that I've had my PS2 since Christmas 2001, and he was genuenly shocked my system still worked. According to him, after 2 years or so, most of the systems just break down.

Nintendo's sales may have went up, but that's mostly due to the fact everyone has or had ps2 already, and people who want xbox probally already have it that also.

I just hope the xbox2 doesn't turn out to be a dissapointment. Not having a hardrive would piss off allot of the xbox's current fanbase. Not just because of the fact using memory cards suck, but things like downloads and updates and whatnot would be much harder to handle. Custom soundtracks are one of the things that makes xbox games different.

Backwards capability is somthing i'de like to see, but if it wasn't included i don't think it would be a huge deal(except give a reason for ps2 fans to crap on it more).

I agree about a decent amount of ps2 sales is probally replacements....but to be fair same goes for xbox(im a xbox fanboy but its true). The thompson dvd drive in most xbox's is a piece of crap.

Actually, according to UK Macworld macworld, the plan is for Microsoft to use the technology from Connectix' Virtual PC program to enable backwards capability through emulation. Microsoft acquired Connectix a few years ago. Although, do THAT many people still play old Playstation games on their PS2? Just curious.

And having seen Halo on a G5, let me tell you, the things developers will be able to pull off with this system should be amazing.

Maybe not recently (the last three months), but I know there are games that either myself or my girlfriend might be inspired to play at any time. Puzzle Fighter, FF Tactics/VII - IX, the Bushido Blades, etc. Plus, I'm still looking to pick up Final Fantasy Origins and Anthology when money permits. Its nice because those games can stay in my library, and I don't have to get my old Playstation from home, since I had to share that with my brothers at the time. Backwards compatibility is not a necessary feature, but its a nice perk, and it certainly helps a system at launch time in the case that the initial releases aren't all that great.

I still play PS1 games, too. I just bought Um Jammer Lammy a few weeks ago, and I've been looking for the original PaRappa the Rapper to go with it. I also give FF7 and Metal Gear Solid a run through every so often, although MGS will be obsolete soon.

I don't think PaRappa works on the PS2 - or at least - it didn't work on mine. Neither did Tenchu (the first one, the second one worked fine).

That could just be my discs though. My MGS got some weird spidery thing in the disc and dissolved - so it may have been the storage of the CDs

I know there were some games that were reported to have problems when played on the PS2 (at least the original versions, I have no idea if they fixed them in later models). After googling, here's the list:

Arcade Party Pak; Midway
Atari's Arcade Greatest Hits 2; Midway
Fighter Maker; Agetec
Final Fantasy Anthology; Square EA
International Track and Field; Konami
Judge Dredd; Activision
Monkey Hero; Take 2 Interactive
Mortal Kombat Trilogy; Midway
Tomba; SCEA

So no PaRappa or Tenchu, at least on the "official" Sony list...

Hmm, is this why my back has been hurting?

I played it over Christmas break and found it to be decent. The story was completely insane, the songs were silly but not too bad, and it was quite easy (beat it in a day), but you're not the first person who I've heard trash it. What about it didn't thrill you?

And it's funny you should mention Tenchu, Zim, because I distinctly remember reading a preview of the PS2 from PSM magazine back in the day, and that was one of the examples they used of how the PS2 can smooth out PS1 game graphics.

I have not had any problems with the original Tenchu or the Midway Party Pak that was listed later. The only annoying thing is you cant save onto the PS2 memory cards, and the PS1 controllers only work for the PS1 games (so if you have the multitap and a bunch of controllers, you need to replace all of them).

Yeah, don't I know it. I bought two when they first came out so I could sell the second one to pay for the first in part. Mine stopped working one week later and I got a call from the guy I sold the other two cause the same thing happened to him a month later.

Come to think of it, when I first got a Dreamcast it crapped out within a day on me. The only company I can depend on for hardware seems to be Nintendo.

"Nintendo's sales may have went up, but that's mostly due to the fact everyone has or had ps2 already, and people who want xbox probally already have it that also."

Well xbox was slightly ahead of Nintendo in overall sales, but I think Nintendo has pulled ahead now or at least even. They've put out a decent lineup of games over the past year.

As to backward compatibility, well I think it's a good idea. Mostly for families that can't afford $50 games but want their kids to have the PS2 and also use it for DVD's like my sisters family. Being able to get your kids games for 10 to 20 bucks is a big plus, especially when they're little enough to not know they are old games.

It's been a few years since I've played either 1 or 2, but my major complaint was the songs and gameplay in 2. The first PaRappa was crazy, and strange, but a lot of fun to play. The songs were fun to go through, and you wanted to see what silly stuff was up next. The second PaRappa just didn't bring the same things to the table. The songs were boring. The game was easy. We went through it in a few hours and went, "Why the hell did we rent this?" There really wasn't any redeeming value to the game. This wouldn't really be much of a problem, and wouldn't incur such a dire warning, except that the first game was good. And whenever the first game is a lot of fun, and the sequel is utter shit, it's like a swift kick right in the balls. So I try to warn everyone I can.
