OK, I have a real question. Please only answer if you own the system.

I'm thinking of picking up an Xbox due to some lip synch issues on my DVD player. Is this an issue with Xbox playback of DVDs? Is the quality any better than a PS2s playback? Sometimes I get jaggies on diagonal lines on my PS2 when I use it for DVD -- does this happen on the Xbox as well?

Ugh. My poor baby Apex is finally giving out on me.

I'd just get a DVD player. to be honest. They are selling decent brands for uner $100 now.
I just do not find game console DVD players to work nearly as well as a dedicated DVD.
Check Best Buy- they have a lot of cheap, decent brands.
Both X-Box and PS2 DVDs work about the same in my opinion. The ONLY odd thing about it is that for some reason, my "A Christmas Story" DVD freaks out on my actual DVD player, but works fine on the PS2 and X-Box.
It is odd.

Well, normally I would be for the plain DVD player, but like I said - I'm gettin weird errors on my regular DVD player and not on my PS2. Since I would be replacing it anyway, this might be a decent opportunity to get an XBox.

Specifically, what problems do people note with the playback quality of the Xbox?

i don't have a x-box, but lip synch issues can be either the player or the disc. as you found out, the player isn't decoding everything in synch (IIRC, sound is more complicated to decode, and if the player isn't up to par, you get out of synch)

my 5 year old sony is starting to do that with discs, but they play fine on my ps2, and if i rewind a min or 2, or go back to the start of the chapter, it will re-synch...

if you wanted the system anyway, here's your excuse to splurge.

if you had no interest what so ever with the x-box, get a quality player.

Well, I already have the PS2 which definitely has some minor video quality annoyances. Since I have the remote for it, even though I hate the remote I have, I don't really ~need~ a sub-par DVD player...

I guess I just need to spend the $150 and pick up a newer DVD player. I do have an old first gen DVD so that's probably the issue with the synch

I haven't had any issues with playback quality so far. Then again, I apparently have the only X Box in the world that doesn't crash.

Knock on wood, but my X-Box does not crash either. I also don't have any issues using it as a DVD player since I don't own a stand alone DVD player. Just be sure to use the RF Adapter, because I had problems with coloration before I got one.

My Xbox player works as well as the Apex I used to have. Remember that to watch DVD movies, you must purchase a remote control kit for $20-$30. It may seem like too much but also remember that the system comes with a hard drive included so there is no need to purchase a memory card.

The only problem that I have with the official remote is that there is no power off button on the remote. There is a new 3rd party remote kit that has a power off button so if that is important to you, you might want to look into that. Though I don't recall my Apex player remote having a true power off function so it might not bother you.

My stand alone DVD player has lip synch issues. I haven't had that problem with my PS2 yet. Maybe I'll notice it with the 27" flat screen I just bought yesterday. CompUSA La Mesa, baby... $200!

RF???? did you hook up your x-box through your VCR? because that is how you would get "coloration", through the macrovision copy protection...

please explain this "coloration" more dude...just trying to help a brother out...

I've got issues with both the Xbox AND the PS2 DVD players, so I'm not sure if I'm the guy to give advice. I've had both of them not play DVDs properly which is why I finally ended up going to B.J.'s and getting a cheap-o DVD player that works way better than either of them.

If you want to get the Xbox so you can play games too, don't even bother. I've had the Xbox since launch and I still haven't found a game I like for it. Locks up and glitches all the time for me. I haven't had a system give me this much trouble since my launch day PSX...

Yeah, I had hooked it up through the VCR before getting hte adapter. Once I got the adapter that's when the macrovision problems ended.

Wow, I did not see that 360 story actually. How can a company that big be unable to make proper power cords after all these years? I remember having to replace the cord on my original xbox for similar reasons.
