Just a quick question about the WWF's booking team. Is it just one group of people who book the entire show, or do they have on group of people who book the upper card guys and another who are responsible for the lower card guys?

We all know that Stephanie McMahon is booking the entire thing 20 minutes before the show goes on the air, if that early.

Stephy is booking? Wait, if that's the case, then how come she bookes herself to look like an annoying shrill who just stinks up the ring whenever she's on the mic and try to bring down HHH's awesomeness?

Or wait, was that sarcasm?

No, I meant the comment that Stephy was booking 20 minutes before the show starts might have been sarcastic. Sorry, I should have quoted what I was referring to.

You guys need to read more Mr. Tito. And The last few times I looked at the Smarks message board this line of thinking was very prevalent.

From what I understand, booking is performed through a highly complicated and well-thought out game of "One Potato, Two Potato" between Stephanie and Paul E.

Yeah, and they have something called the "Main Event Wheel" which has random tag pairings of main eventers for that nights main event. Steph is blindfolded and she spins it and whatever it lands on they go with storylines be damned.

no! suicides are the civil servants of the after life!

to the best of my knowledge, the creative team is made up of five or six people. at least one of them is a "hollywood" writer. vince, steph and paul are in there and i don't think shane is.

i think the observer posted something a while back about how everyone on the team had their "boys". steph was primarily concerned with hunter, paul with rvd and vince with stone cold. i don't know how the archives are over there but if you're really curious you could do some digging. or write to "ask to the torch". (i'm 90% sure it was an observer story where "wwf creative team" or "wwf writing week" was toward the end of the headline.)

the writing schedule is surprisingly compact. the team starts putting raw together on friday and works over the weekend. they all have a conference call with vince on sunday where the lion's share of the show is set. i think vince decides the order and placement of matches and interviews and THAT gets absolutely finalized at the arena on monday.

smackdown is written on tuesday. that surprised me. they spend all this time on raw, then bang out smackdown in one day.

so there you go and here's your grain of salt. my memory is fuzzy.

I am sort of getting sick and tired about all the bitching about the booking that " is done by Stephanie alone just prior to the show"...

As FAB stated there is a bunch of people doing it.
The head bookers make the storylines, then guys like Patterson talk to the wrestlers about filling in the details for the matches..

The random tag thing, although sometimes kinda WTF is a GREAT thing!!
remember when the PPV match would be guy A vs guy B and they had the match 3 weeks in a row only have it be a dq orsomething lame like that? or a run-in???
At least with the RTGenerator they can have the guys be in the ring, without giving away the match and still tease the huge show down..'heel a is in the ring, face a enters, heel a quickly tags out, etc..later in the match, he has no where to go from face a and they pound on eachother while the crowd goes mad!'

I don't think the booking is that bad right now, but they are trying to recapture the glory of the early mcmahon-helmsley period (and the love triangle) and right now that isn't working..
THAT made for great stories outside of the ring. The HHH-Steph breakup alas doesn't.

Is Stephanie to blame? I don't believe that for one bit...
For all we fucking know she is the only sane one on the team preventing Heyman from booking Scaffold bra & panty matches!

Oh, and FAB. It kinda makes sense that they SD booking is done on tuesday, at least filling in the details i assume. I guess the big picture is sorta penciled in allready.
They can feed off what was getting pops on Raw.

The one thing that people always said was a strength of the WWF in the Monday Night Wars was that "the buck always stops with Vince McMahon." So while I know that he has underlings doing the writings, be it Steph, Heyman, Prichard, HHH, Gewirtz, whomever, in the end I lay the blame for my issues with the WWF at the feet of Mr. McMahon. If one day he ever had the realization, "99% of the WWF fans seem to not want to ever see my daughter on tv again" he could remove her from tv by simply making her not write herself in, or not have Heyman write her in, or whomever. So while from what everyone says there is a core of 3-5 people who do the majority of the writing for the show (Heyman, Steph, Gewirtz, HHH , Prichard) it's all Vince's baby in the end.

I dunno...Steph may be the ultimate heel, despised by smarks and marks alike. I don't totally dislike her. My main complaint is that too many angles are ABOUT her. I don't care if she's involved in angles if they revolve around the wrestlers, but she should be a secondary figure.

That's the whole problem. You tell me how this booking process goes...but what I get on my TV on Mondays and Tuesdays for the last who the hell knows how long with the exception of a show here and there, or a moment here and there...has been complete crap. Let's face it.

For example, Goldust spent 3 weeks hyping up the guy he was going to go after. It was a good build-up for a mid-card feud. He reveals that its RVD and attacks him. Also good. But from there, the writing team completely blew it. RVD did his run-ins. They had their match. End of feud. Nobody cared. Why? Because the writing team didn't give us anything to care about. What makes the Goldust character so unique? His supposed pyschological warfare tactics to get to opponents. What's RVD's character? That he's completely laid back. What a perfect setup. What a perfect opportunity for fans to care about RVD as a character rather than be a fan of RVD the exciting spot machine. The writing team didn't give the fans a thing to latch onto. They set up A vs. B. A attacks B. B attacks A. B beats A in match. That doesn't play to the strengths of either character because the fans don't automatically have an emotional attachment to either character like they do to an Austin or Rock.

You can take out Goldust/RVD and insert basically every feud of the last 2 years. Edge/Christian, the Hardyz break-up, Invasion, Love Triangle...they either blow the feud or they cut the storyline short leaving no satisfaction. That is an abominable track record. So to people who are tired of people bitching about the booking team, quit being irrational and look at the facts. The WWF can't consistently entertain from segment to segment, let alone week to week. There's no evidence that the writing team puts any significant thought into any storylines beyond those that involve The Upper Echelon of Taker, Austin, Rock, and Triple H.

The problem with the RTG is just that...it doesn't take any THOUGHT to throw these matches together. What's an easy way to try and get a little ratings and keep a feud going? Oh yeah, we'll throw some people who hate each other in tag matches. Screw that. The WWF has been using it almost every week for 4 years now, and its old. The WWF needs to be creative. They need to figure out new methods of advancing feuds. It reminds me of when Wheel of Fortune changed the final round. For years every contestant would choose "RSTLNE" with very little exception, so they just gave them those letters and had them choose other ones. It got boring. The RTG is boring.

Most of the people who criticize the WWF's booking don't do it to be part of some supposed cool internet crowd or to be like Keith or Meltzer. Most people's criticisms are absolutely legitimate. The WWF has problems. Big problems. I'm glad that some of you don't seem to see them. I'm glad you like the WWF's direction. The WWF is booking for you. What the WWF is doing is alienating people like me, who has been watching for 15 years.

Then again, typing that last sentence made me think...maybe I'm just getting too old for this stuff?

I wouldn't mind seeing more 3 Way Dances as mainevents. It's just as easy to intertwine angles that way as it is with the Random TagTeam Generator.

The booking is pretty close to atrocious right now. The whole Stone Cold and a net gun prove this. Sure it might have been *neat*, but what was the point. Stone Cold didn't achieve anything by going to his SCSA Utility belt. If the WWF wanted to show off their net gun than they should have stuck it farther down the card.

The nWo truck scene was just as bad. The Rock could have easily been off television after receiving all three nWo finishing moves and being hit with a tack hammer. No, they have to go way overboard on us and pull a truck angle on us. Foley said it best in his book about Halftime Heat. The people that were watching it loved the match, then they went to the cornball shot of the Rock at the end and everything up to that point was forgotten. So while the nWo beatdown was brutal and a pretty good markout moment, most will forget it and just remember the truck scene.

On a side note if Raven isn't gonna wrestle, I wouldn't mind seeing him on the booking team.

At least when Vince Russo was booking you had some good storylines such as the Darkside Undertaker, Edge,Christian,Gangrel. The Nation of Domination was also cool too.

Stephanie's booking is just plain boring.

I think Russo's one and only strength as a booker is that he was good at giving everyone on the roster a storyline and a personality, not just the main eventers. This is where the current WWF writing style falls down, at least for me. BDC said it exactly; for midcard feuds these days, they just throw two guys together on a weak premise and then have them do run-ins on each other until the PPV rolls around.

The problem with Russo's approach is a) it heavily deemphasized wrestling in favor of skits and promos, even more so than the current approach; and b) with all those angles going on, there was always quite a bit of crap mixed on with them. If you think the Japanese Shampoo Feud is lame, how about Val Venis feuding with Droz and Prince Albert because they forcibly pierced his nose?

So on Smackdown they tease announcer Tazz in the ring only to be replaced by Undertaker, on RAW they tease announcer Ross in the ring only to be replaced by Orton....and all that goes through my head is "why is Jim Ross wearing a tuxedo shirt?
