Total Credit: Buck Woodward @ 1W

Over at 1W, they posted a report of the WWE stockholder conference call. It seemed really short but two things stood out to me was quotes about their video library:

- They are looking at ways to release their video library without violating the WWF/World Wildlife Fund ruling in England. They are looking into "video on demand" projects for cable and satellite systems.

- They own the AWA and ECW video libraries, and are looking into a "Classics" series.

-------------
I was wondering now WWE owns their library, WCW's, ECW's, and AWA's. That seems like a really long list of videos. I can imagine the videos they can put out.

I have noticed that when they play retro moments on the Confidental program they do show the olf WWF logo, but they dont show the WWF additude logo. Whats up with that?

If they can make money with those stupid Fanatic Series PPVs, VOD projects of old PPVs/Clashes/noteworth TV from any of the companies could make a killing. While now is not the time to try and launch a cable channel, the cost of putting something on VOD is comparably quite small. I think it would be a good feeler to see what kind of interest there is in this retro stuff.

I believe the case with the "classic" WWF logo vs. the scratch logo is that WWE had a deal the wildlife people where the old logo was acceptable. The change to the scratch logo was one of the things that constituted a violation of the agreement whereby both bodies could use the WWF initials. I suppose that since the remaining WWF had agreed that the then-WWF could use the old logo it would be hard to go back all these years later and argue that they can't.

I ran into a guy this summer(July?) that works for the WWE when I was down in CT., he works in video production of some sort. I asked what the plan was for the ECW video library, since it had just recently arrived, he said the only plan thus far was a alot of master tape watching. Oh, and I told him if he talks with the writers to push Steven Richards because everyone I know loves him and Victoria. He said Victoria was a real nice person, Ivory was as charming and outgoing as she appears on TV, Torri kept to herself when she came to the WWE but has since lost her shell, Stacy was a prima donna(I was saddened by this), Kurt is awesome, and Brock comes off as a gentle giant. Oh, I got a cool free key chain to boot!

Ach. I've said for ages that it's a shock Vince hasn't tried to launch an "all wrestling, all the time" cable channel. I know now is a horrible time to even make that attempt, but a girl can dream.

Come on, people! Weekend marathons of the Wrestlemanias, RAW and Smackdown! and (oh, all right) Velocity and Heat all day.

Come to think of it, it's probably good he hasn't done that. I'd never get anything done except laundry, which I tend to fold in front of the TV whilst watching an old RAW episode on tape.

Still. 24/7 wrestling? I'd give my left tit.

Anyway, I think the VOD thing is a good idea -- there's so much out there that a lot of us are dying to see and can't find on video. And as much as I love bootlegs, give me a good clear copy any day over someone's old converted BETA tape.

What you'd probably get on an all-wrestling channel would be similar to ESPN Classic. They'd pick out three or four noteworthy things (SNME, Clashes, ECW Arena, whatever) and play them several times each over the course of a week, with filler like old Superstars or WCW Worldwide scattered to make up the schedule. Personally, I'd love to see such a channel pick a starting point and work in chronological order, regardless of how stupid the shows were at any given point, and have each week represent a different week in wrestling with WWF/NWA/WCW/AWA/ECW/whatever from the same week in history being shown at the same time. You'd only need 20-25 hours of distinct programming a week.

Some-one non-mcmahon is trying to set up a wrestling channel in the U.K. It has been said that it will have NWA:TNA, MLW, 3PW, CZW and old ECW, WCW and WWE classic matches.
I will find out more info about it but on CZW's website they said that it is not going ahead util at least january (the original plan was to start it in September/October)

I heard a rumour about that, but I don't see how this UK channel could broadcast any ECW, WCW, or WWE footage since WWE owns all of it.

I too heard that rumour, but nothing abuot WWF, WCW, ECW in that mix. Of course Vince won't cooperate with competition, even if that competition is as much of a threat to him as El Salvador is to the U.S.

July 4th 1994: It was a bright sunny day in this small Ohio town. All was not bright for the four disfranchised men however, there hearts were not full of patriotic glee, there intentions not set on the social gathering taking place on the cities streets. Flemming, Parish, Sidell, Weigal gathered round the TV to watch Benny Hinn, a loud sound, similar to gunfire startled their medicated hearts. When the four men went to the door, to examine the situation they were greeted with 600 of the towns citizens, chanting in unison. TARDS GO HOME...TARDS GO HOME!!!!

I've said this before on this board, but I think it bears repeating: the easy money from this library is in DVD sales.

It wouldn't even have to be `The Best of Austin' or whatever. There doesn't even have to be a theme, or considerable $$$ spent on marketing them. Just throw in four hours of classic matches from the big four over say ten volumes and sell it. There are enough `core' wrestling fans that would get this just for the rarities, or matches they haven't been able to get on DVD because of the McMahonopoly over the last two yars.

I am in violent agreement with Messer Bulldog. Throw in the odd Easter Egg and they would walk off the shelves. Even the DVD's of PPV's with a couple of good matches and the rest filler or duds seem to sell well. One can't underestimate the selling power of nostalgia!!

Seems WWE might want more for their library. From the NWA message Board:

"Mid-South/UWF library is currently in the possession of the ex-wife of Bill Watts and it's been reported that WWE is/was negotiating with her to purchase it"

That's cool...if they're going to go with a big VOD system or even an all wrestling channel, they might as well accumulate as much footage from as many different places as they can. The more variety you can offer the better business will be.

I doubt the Watts are going to be giving up the Mid-south library any time soon. They have just set up www.universalwrestling.com, where they are selling off master copies of all the Mid-South/UWF/Power Pro episodes, and Mid-South house shows. This could prove to be a successful business venture for the Watts (It's being run by Bill's ex-wife and his kids), why would they go through all the trouble of setting it up if they are just going to give it away?
