Well, let the wild speculation begin, but I do give them credit that it seems like they are doing SOMETHING. However, is this going to be "You'll still be push, but we're just not going to pay you" suspensions ala Randy Orton?

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

Don't give them too much credit. I don't think it's a coincidence that they suspend all these guys on the same day congress announces it's going ahead with the hearings into pro-wrestling later in the year.

Meltzer has the details. It's not long, but I don't want to quote the whole thing. No length mentioned, but they sound like suspensions from TV (which they weren't prior), so we'll just be watching to see who disappears.

These suspensions are based on the Signature Pharmacy case and other similar drugs by internet. Both Chris Benoit and Brian Adams were revealed as customers from Signature Pharmacy after their deaths.

I would presume these aren't orders from any time recent - the drug policy is supposed to prohibit prescriptions without a doctor's visit. Perhaps they found a loophole or just forged the visit.

There's also this:

The company also has informed all performers that beginning 11/1, the company will publicly release the names of anyone who is suspended under drug policy violations.

They kinda sorta did that at the beginning, and then seemed to stop (or everyone got clean!) after that SmackDown! PPV which went to heck. If they announce the offenses publicily, the punishment has to be equally as public, and I wonder how willing they'll be to keep doing that up.

Edit: WWE Press Release saying the same thing (before Dave did, so I assume this is where he heard.) Didn't see anything on WWE.com when I put this up originally, nothing there now. You have to go to the corporate site to find it.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

The Daily News here in New York identified the ten:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/2007/08/30/2007-08-30_top_wwe_names_emerge_in_doping_scandal.html

Randy Orton
Charlie Haas
Adam "Edge" Copeland
Robert "King Booker" Huffman
Shane "Gregory" Helms
Anthony "Santino Marella" Carelli
John "Morrison" Hennigan
Darren "William Regal" Matthews
Ken "Mr. Kennedy" Anderson
Chavo Guerrero

The News also I.D.'d Mike "Simon Dean" Bucci as being involved in the Signature Pharmacy probe, but since he's not an active performer he's probably not among the ten.

So by my count, three big impacts:

- No Cena/Orton rematch at Unforgiven
- The ECW title is up in the air (bet they wish they put Punk over now, hmmm?)
- The McMahon bastard child angle will need to be stalled

And by any account, if Orton's not fired then justice won't be served. This is at least his third Wellness violation on top of all the other shit he's pulled in the past. Cut ties, Vince.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Weird that this came down from Albany right after they had a taping in Albany. I guess.

Hey, when did Booker Tio Huffman (thesmokinggun.com) become Robert?

Let's see, people who we (presumably?) won't get to see at the Minneapolis taping:

John Morrison
Chavo Guerrero

Eh.

Well, this is kind of a punch in the gut after the way Raw ended. If they're serious about sending Orton home, they can't just leave the angle up in the air. I'm guessing Monday's Raw features a Cena/Orton match in which Cena absolutely pounds the living piss out of Orton and wins in a completely one-sided squash (a total Jesus job, like back in '04), sending Orton on a one-way trip to Suspensionville: Population 10. It's not like they couldn't just push Orton again when he comes back, anyway.

As for Tuesday's ECW, see above and substitute Punk/Morrison for Cena/Orton. It might seem somewhat counterproductive to have some of your top guys and future stars squashed like bugs. Nuts to that! They need to send a strong message to these guys that this shit won't be tolerated anymore. Humiliate them on-air and send them home. Nothing sends a better message than that. It's harsh, but it has to be done, because WWE has the UNITED STATES CONGRESS breathing down their necks now!

Damn...losing Regal, Santino, Kennedy, BOOKER...who's left to look forward to on Monday nights now? And who does Cena feud with now? Do they try and hotshot an Umaga feud?

No big loss for SmackDown, though I would have had a good chuckle had Khali's name been on this list.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up this quote from the Summerslam predictions thread:

Brother, I didn't even know the half of it. They really dodged a major bullet by having Cena overcome the odds for the hundredth time.

This makes Mr. Kennedy's recent interviews about how he has not done steroids since the Wellness Policy began seem KINDA foolish now.

I wonder how some of them will pass the buck on this one this time. At least Finlay's name isn't on the list, or Jeff Hardy.

And isnt Chavo's real name Sal Somethingerother?

Sad seeing Booker's name on the list. One of the things I always liked about him was that you never heard his name connected to any foolishness or backstage drama (except for that little scuffle with Batista, but that one doesnt count because I totally took Book's side on that one).

And hadnt Kennedy already started shrinking after Benoit's death?

And and color me surprised to see William Regal's name up there. His body doesnt exactly scream "Juiced" to me.

As much as I hate Orton (not "heel hate", not "X-pac hate", not "Bossman hate", but "Actual Hate"), he's probably one of the only guys that TNA could actually pick up and not be looked at as another WWE has-been castoff. I suspect this to be one of the reasons he hasnt been cut all together.

Mr Kennedy looks like a total ass now doesn't he? To go on that long ass kissing spiel and then still end up on the suspended list ... what a douchebag.

... and I am shocked, SHOCKED that Lashley and 'The Undefeted' Snitsky and his bachne were not on the list.

Chavo comes as no surprise seeing what's happened to the crowd he was running with.

You have to keep in mind,

1) These are only the people who were caught and names became public because of the nature of the scandal and the investigation, and who were only punished due to timing. It's not exactly a Chicago Black Sox situation. These are just the guys 'unlucky' enough to have been exposed like this. Which is why:

2) For the company to punish them in any way harsher than these PR-necessary suspensions would be very hypocritical considering they had, previously to Benoit's death, done everything short of endorsing and encouraging this kind of thing. It would be the very definition of throwing them under the bus.

Do they hotshot Cena/HHH, then? The most obvious backup would have been Booker, but oops.

Given that they dodged a "WWE champion Randy Orton suspended" bullet, they're probably feeling pretty lucky on the balance.

Simplest thing to do would be to have Morrison job on his way out a la RVD last year, but that goes against the whole "No more suspending guys but keeping them on TV--we're serious" approach. I assume WWE feels pressure to get Morrison off the road ASAP, but it seems to me that an "RVD Rule" in the wellness policy would not be unreasonable. (Not sure if Congress or the media would see it that way, though.)

That's a good point. I didn't consider that in my last post. I imagine this list of ten might end up looking pretty small if they suspended all the offenders on the roster.

RVD and his pot habit doesn't seem so bad anymore.

Any chance we get some more Marc Mero apperances from this?

The Observer reported here:
http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/wo/news/headlines/default.asp?aID=20579

that ESPN released 3 more names (Batista, Funaki, and Masters)

Did it mention anywhere how long the suspensions are?

After losing ANOTHER title match at Summerslam, Batista isn't a big loss. But at the same time, it's a good thing he did, because that would have been another PR nightmare if Batista had gotten suspended while holding the title. Amazing, it's been less than an hour and already I feel stupid for saying that SmackDown came out practically unscathed by this story.

And how stupid does Chris Masters have to be to get caught AGAIN? Did he think no one would notice that he walked in one day looking like a human Creatine ad, magically lost his physique the next day, and then magically got it back the day after?

Congratulations, SmackDown fans! Your top stars for the foreseeable future are the Great Khali, Undertaker, and Mark Henry. Enjoy!

I believe that the terms of the Wellness Policy are 30 days for a first offense, 90 days for a second, termination for a third. For everyone but Chris Masters (second) and Randy Orton (third - FIRE HIS ASS, Vince), this would be a first offense.

No, not Funaki!

Cena vs. Umaga would seem to be the best option for Unforgiven. I think they're saving the HHH feud for Wrestlemania, and the only other upper midcard option is Jeff Hardy (who just got back from a drug suspension of his own).

Or, Batista is suspended on the Smackdown side, that'll take out the Batista-Khali match. So, CENA-KHALI III!

Also, timing is an issue. Apparently some of the prescriptions predate the Wellness plan, in which case it'd be pretty easy (and also understandable) to lessen the punishment for the early offenders.

We actually can't be sure of that. They started doing secret suspensions where you keep all your bookings but work for free after last year's Great American Bash.

Dave writes:

Based on records obtained through sources by the Observer months back, Copeland's last reported prescription came several years ago, when he was recuperating from neck surgery. So many of these incidents here may have predated the Wellness policy implemented in February 2006. It is known Orton and Helms' had transactions that predated the policy, and that the timing of both Copeland and Helms' transactions at the time came during periods of injury rehabilitation. So it may not yet be the time to make Ken Anderson look like a fool, depending on the date, because he has admitted use prior to February of 2006.

It is by no means confirmed that these men are among the ten who were suspended earlier today.

Three other names, now deceased, Chris Benoit, Brian Adams and Eddy Guerrero were also on the list. There are believed to be several more former WWE wrestlers on the list, including one that was expected to be hired this week.

I believe "expected to be hired this week" is John"ny the Bull Stamboli" Hugger.

Damn. How sad is it when you see Funaki and William Regal on the list? Those would be two of the LAST guys I'd expect to be on the list.

I'm dreading the coming onslaught of Mark Henry and Khali matches. Either that or Smackdown will become "The Hornswoggle Hour!" Although if the leprechaun tests positive for anything besides Lucky Charms in his pee, I think I may just have to stop watching Smackdown altogether.

Guess they're gonna be forced to push the women's division this time, eh?
