I've watched 3000 hours of Joshi Puroresu this week so my tolerance for crap is pretty low this fine night. Imagine my smacked down hell. Just bear with me this week. Jiminy Fuck, is this show four hours long now. This was eternal...

WHAT WORKED-
- Mark Henry isn't affected by Professional Wrestling and that sucks. They need to hip these guys that it's a work and that Kurt Angle could actually pin him in 10 seconds if he wanted to. Angle bumps all over the ring for the World's Crappiest Ken Patera- throwing some hysterical punches before absorbing a batch of Hercules Hernandez style offense. Lesnar has the shittiest looking finisher I've seen in a while.

- Valbowski and D-Von was perfectly fine mediocre US wrestling. Why isn't Valbowski with the Evil Canadians? It would be far more productive than spinning his wheels in these kinda heatless affairs. This all sets up a perfectly adequate tag match, I'm assuming...

- Lance and Christian are fun talking about Americans. They didn't say "aboot" at any point and that was PROMISE MISSED! Christian was fun as the goofball conning Stephanie into thinking that he wasn't turning on her. HEAR! HEAR! sons of the True North! Learn to punch! The countdown clock in the corner taunts me with how much longer i must endure....

- Hey, Steve Harvey comes on twice a day here. I should watch that, shouldn't I?

- Rikishi is fixing to wrestle but instead RUMORS OF ANGLE JUMPING TO RAW! WOW! Albert comes out and I am wondering if all these folks leave if the big Smackdown fued will be Albert vs Valbowski in a quart of vanilla on a pole match. Can-O-Crowd was popping like freaks for this. This was perfectly fine three minute wrestling. It looks like Vince McMahon is trying to prove to ME that people won't give a fuck if you have two guys in the ring wrestling in their underwear. My fever dream:

VMcM: Hello Dean.
DR: Hello Vince.
VMcM:"See! SEE! No issue, no fued! You don't give a shit about these matches, do you, DEAN?!?!"
DR:"No, you were right, Mr McMahon. I don't give a shit about these matches."

- Lance Storm and Christian take on Hogan and the Rock. The thing I'm trying to figure out is: WHO throws shittier punches- Lance or Hogan? FINALLY, head-to-head, Hogan's punches are lamer than any mere Canadian could EVER foist upon us! U-S-A~! U-S-A~! Rock takes the toned-down heel offense of Lance and Christian and I'm wishing that they had actually pushed Billy and Chuck because they are faaaar more fun on offense than these milksops. Rock bumps big inexplicably again and you have to appreciate his love for his craft. The match is fine from the face side- as Rock sells well and both he and Hogan generate a mountain of heat, but the heels would have to REALLY pull out some moves to look like any semblance of a threat. Here they kinda use their shitty punches and shitty kicks until Rock gets to a comeback and they cut him off. Hogan goes out of his way to help generate heat for the Rock heat segment but one could only wonder what kinda pop they get if the Evil Canadians were more than the Dungeon Of Doom 2002. Luckily, there was a supershitty run-in by Brock Lesnar to make it all moot and this is looking more and more like that episode of Nitro where Sid ran-in every match and THE RATINGS WENT THROUGH THE ROOF!!!! WOW!!! THEY SHOULD DEFINATELY DO THAT AGAIN! !!! Maybe Lesnar can run in on the Rey vs Chavo match! One can't trust this American Wrestling shit!

- John Cena was funny giving the Canadians some good natured ribbing. Test smacking him was the most I've cared about Test ever.

- Hey, why is Rey Misterio Jr wearing a mask? He lost that to Lex Luger three years ago. Like to see him try to wear that in Mexico. Oh right, they actually give a shit about wrestling in Mexico. I forgot. My bad. Match itself was good. Not as good as Rey's match against Eddy Colon in Puerto Rico six months ago or his great great great matches in IWA Mid-South but perfectly fine Cruiserweight action. Rey psychology has gotten deeper since he lost his knees and it made him a smarter wrestler. His time in the indies and PR gave him a different idea about how to work a match and it should pay off in this run, one would hope. His last comeback was really nice with the toehold into the turnbuckle then the MORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-TAL~! into a dropkick, right into the toprope Frankensteiner. Very Silver King-esque in intensity of execution.

- The cage match was fine other than Jericho not actually selling the spear while tied-up in the ropes. Edge spews plasma so it is a legitimate cage match. There were some big spots, Edge makes a good face being beaten to death, there was a nice chairshot. The toprope bulldog was big looking. The Electric Chair finish was truly nasty looking. Plus the postmatch beatdown was nice- as it seemed to set-up a really fun Wargames match if they wanted to. Fuck, that Wargames match I would go to a sportsbar to see. Yessirree...

WHAT DIDN'T WORK-
- Well, the beginning where Stephanie McMahon gives the rundown of the line-up was really annoying. Just SAY IT already.

- Ah, Test is the blandest wrestler on the face of the earth. John Cena isn't gonna bring the excitement to this with his All Japan Women Rookie Offense. The finish was nice eventhough this burgeoning fued could make cakes fall, crops fail, me fall completely asleep....

- Brock and Angle in the Larry Saunders Hallway Moment was very Eudy-esque in the rambling Brock Lesnar-assuming-the-role-of-the-roided-out-freak line recitation. They should try to build angles through hatred portrayed in the ring- as opposed to guys remembering shitty bits of dialogue in the back. See, the problem is that there is never a point where two folks ever just punch each other in the face and make it look like they hate each other. Go watch Lyger and Kikuchi punch each other in the face and they do more in four punches than 12,000 skits on Smerkdurn ever could. It's a Memphis thing- FEEL the hate, don't talk it to death...

- This has promise. Stacy is gonna start fucking Stephanie?!?! How was this a bad thing? Force of habit, maybe? Actually, there isn't gonna be any John Waters-style directed white-trash-turned-lezbeeen rugmunching on camera so fuck all this kinda shit. It's like watching Porky's on TBS- all the good shit is cut out and all you are left this is shitty actresses who were hired because of their big milk wagons not showing said milk wagons. If that's not the hollow work of Satan, I don't know what is.

- Stephanie looking to keep her wrestlers was really time-consuming, but it didn't move this motherfucking turd of a show along any faster. That makes this kinda like Chinese Water Torture. Actually, I'm reminded of AVENGING ANGEL- a film by Luis Bunuel- where a group of people are at a dinner party and can't ever get around to leaving to the point where days pass and they start starving to death and cook a dog. I am a fool who is not leaving this craptacular dinner party serving heaping mounds of mind-numbing sports entertainment.

- Gee... a lot of limos backstage... More Nitro touches... maybe my Odyssey is coming to an end sooner than I thought...

- Ah, Test vs Rey will be pivotal like TAKA tagging with Bradshaw. That angle was the beginning of the kind of push that got TAKA so over and made him the household name that he is today.

THERE YOU HAVE IT.

Dean, forgive my ignorance, but regarding Rey and wearing his mask in Mexico, do you say he would never wear it there because he lost it in a match and it's like a sin to put it back on?

Also, no mention of Edge's backstage skit with Steph (complete with a suspicious crowd eruption when Edge declared himself Smackdown all the way)? Definite miss for me.

One last thing. I too noticed JEricho's continuing to walk around despit an unprotected spear in the ropes, and was bothered by it.

That is all.

What up, Dean! Nice post, as always. I just can't figure soemthing out. You watch this show and expect five star matches every match? This ISN'T Japanese wrestling, get over it. Nobody forces you to write this crap or watch that show.

I always prefer hater-lite version CRZ's recaps anyways.

By any chance are you related to Scott Keith?

Sorry, pal, I'm doing to your post what you do to these shows, and that's be overly critical.

And no one is of course forcing you to read Dean's posts. Not that they shouldn't be required reading for everyone, because of course they should be. Little schoolchildren should have pop quizzes every Friday morning on what Dean has given the world the night before.

Seriously, the guy's been on the internet since what...1756, and his stance has never changed. If you can't accept the mountain for being a mountain, do not try and make the mountain into a lake, for the mountain was here before you and will be here demanding better wrestling long after you are gone.

DR: It would actually be quasi-illegal for him to wear it in Mexico. They have actual wrestling commisions in Mexico. Plus folks would riot and throw chairs at him if he tried to wear it in Mexico after losing it in a match.

Also, no mention of Edge's backstage skit with Steph (complete with a suspicious crowd eruption when Edge declared himself Smackdown all the way)? Definite miss for me.

DR: I quickly mentioned that when I was going through the Canadian Content of the slit sections of the show.

WBBTD: This ISN'T Japanese wrestling, get over.

DR: Hey, are you using a broad Japanese accent? Is that like the KAI-EN-TAI~! voice over skits? This isn't Japanese wrestling but it also isn't supposed to suck as much shit as it does 85 per cent of the time. I told you to bear with me this week, but do you people listen to my pleas for help?

Wow. Someone use "internet seniority" to argue about this guy's views being a little... Well, I'll come out and say it again, overly critical.

I'm allowed my own opinion on this, and nowhere in WWE are the words "proresuru" "lucha libre" or anything related to tradition in World Wrestling Entertainment. 1. It's entertainment based, and 2. you're not funny, get over it.

Does the WWE have the best wrestlers in the world? Probably, but I'm willing to sacrifice Mysterio not doing crazy crap every single night so he can do it once or twice a month and stay healthy. Same with Benoit, same with Jericho, the list goes on and on. I like the Japanese and Lucha styles, but I don't go into a WWE show expecting it to be up to par with that stuff.

Your post every week is like me posting a work rate report on New Japan every week and bitching and moaning about the promos sucking (even in Japanese) why aren't there any video packages updating me on what's going on, and WHY are these guys feuding (are they feuding!?)!? Needless to say in Japan and Mexico wrestling is closer to a sport than anything else (which isn't a bad thing, but we all know it isn't real, so my cup of tea is being entertained while the athleticism is going on). But, I enjoy the American version just as much, if not more, as it's counterparts. 1. WWE has all the guys I really want to see in one place. If eight of the guys who are in my top ten are WWE wrestlers then so be it. 2. I like the storylines they provide quality entertainment, sometimes, IE lately.

No everyone's going to agree on everything, but everyone's entitled to an opinion, Jackaroo, and me seeing your post and putting my feedback is why boards like this were created.

As for your "ten matches per match," rant, I don't even know what that means. Can I have the English version please?

As for you being a loser, I can't comment on that. I just don't see the reason you even waste your time watching "American Wrestling" when all you do is complain about it. That's like me watching reruns of Family Matters when I know the show sucks. I have better things to do with my time.

Couple of notes:

1) Didn't Rey lose his mask during his run in WCW? If so, can we freely ignore it?

2) Most Canadians don't say "aboot". The only folks who come close are people from southern Ontario, and even then, it sounds more like "a boat"

Rey lost his mask in what was supposed to be Mysterio/Luger, but because Rey really slammed Luger's arm in a car door, Luger was out. So, insted we got Outsiders vs. Mysterio and Konnan. Hair vs. Mask. Liz's hair vs. Rey's mask. Needless to say, Oustiders won due to Liz interferance on the outside distracting the ref and Rey was left maskless.

I like the mask concept. Period. And I agree with something said in another chat, and that's since when was WWE had any relations of association with Luche Libre other than using their guys to wrestle on their shows?

Besides, sometimes we like the shows because we think we can think of better ideas than the writers on how to use the characters and wrestlers involved. Even in times of crappy writing some quality comes through.

The WWE won't let Hogan use his ground attack or his Inziguri, and it looks like that Lesnar will remain a Baba-type monster and wrestle entirely vertical. They made Molly have the young divas look good in-ring, although its evident she can wipe the floors using their hairs as mops. And no one is to be more put over than HHH. We sigh and hope that someone totally breaks out the WWE paradigm, but we get used to it. That why we mark out when there are signs of subersion of the unwritten paradigm.

"Business has just picked up" says JR. Then right on cue, Molly enters the arena! Never was JR any better in introducing someone. --Raw 7/15

"As for your "ten matches per match," rant, I don't even know what that means. Can I have the English version please?"

I think he might be referring to this line from your original post; "You watch this show and expect five matches every match?" But I could be wrong on this one.

Also read: "I'm allowed my own opinion on this, and nowhere in WWE are the words "proresuru" "lucha libre" or anything related to tradition in World Wrestling Entertainment." I could be wrong on this, but I think puroresu is basically the shortened and bastardized in the translation term for "professional wrestling", which would seem to be the second word in the WWE acronym. Again, I could be wrong though.

One last thing seen: "I just don't see the reason you even waste your time watching "American Wrestling" when all you do is complain about it. That's like me watching reruns of Family Matters when I know the show sucks. I have better things to do with my time." Such as to post on msg boards about posts you don't like, despite knowing what sort of content is going to be in them from prior experience?

I don't mean to pick a fight with you Deion, as you are entitled to your opinion, and it is valid and closer to the majority opinion of wrestling fans in America. However, to say someone is overly critical is a subjective judgment based solely on what you believe the proper way to watch a program is. Dean is obviously not entertained by the same things you are, but this in no way negates his opinions or invalidates them. This sort of complaint seems to crop up a lot recently (as seen in the earlier Scott Keith reference), and I just don't understand why people get so up in arms because someone comes out and says they aren't being that entertained by what they're seeing. I wonder if it isn't just the IWC's version of disliking people who watch foreign films or don't like stuff played on MTV, as those with more refined/snobbish tastes raise the ire of the mass audience who finds themself insulted by the fact someone says what they like isn't very good, despite the fact that the other person has no greater claim to being the true arbiter of good or bad taste. Either way it's fruitless to try and convince someone to either "get better taste" or "be less critical", so I don't know why so much bandwidth is spent doing either.

Sorry, that's been bothering me for a while now.

Yes, but when they're not entertained, why watch?

That is the question.

It's a waste of time for them to watch and bitch all the time, just like it has become a waste of my time to respond to this post. But, and this is my opinion, some people feel the need to watch WWE who don't like it. WHY? Why waste your time? Better yet, why waste your time recapping this so-called "crap." I mean, sure, I know what prorseru means, I couldn't think of the fighting spirit term, but hell, it's not Japanese or Lucha, so why compare the shows? WWE doesn't seek to do the same things they do in Japan or Mexico. Also, in Japan do they give me a reason to give a shit about every match?

As for my bad typing, go to hell. So I messed up. I went back and edited it just for your reading pleasure. Plus the guy knew what I was getting at when he responded. He tried to make me look dumb (which I was, I sometimes preview the reply but it's rare), which is petty.

While I agree with you it's dumb for us to fight over one being "too critical" while the argues for me to "get better taste," I just don't find these workrate reports that funny. So, I responded once with my opinion. I just think it's a waste of HIS time especially to pose these rants when he could go, like anybody else, into a Smackdown forum and talk about how the show sucks there. Where I would also lambast him for being overly critical. Just some thoughts...

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

Boy, that made my morning.

After Angle, Benoit, Eddy AND Chavo, I don't think I'd put anyone else in my _personal_ top 50 list.

You know, nothing amuses me more than people complaining about peoples' writing style or gimmick or whatever, be it Dean, SK or whomever. Just don't read it. I hate Spielberg, so I don't see his movies. I hate Bill O'Reilly, so I don't watch his show. I can't stand SK, so I don't read anything he writes. It makes so much simpler.

And, as I wrote elsewhere, all the whining about Rey could have been avoided by just giving him a new gimmick. "Lucha tradition" allows guys who lost their hood to just create a new gimmick.

Why did CRZ suffer through several months of Thunder recaps? Because the show was there, it had intermittent moments that weren't bad, and other people were interested in what CRZ had to say about the show. And so it goes with Dean, Scott Keith, or any other Internet recapper.

It's not as if the show is one uninterrupted entity, which must be accepted or rejected as a whole. There's nothing wrong with mentioning the good things AND bitching about the things that could have been done better. If you don't like it, find a recapper whose standards of "what is entertaining" are closer to your own. Because that's what it's all about, isn't it?

Some people watched mid-90's Nitro for the cruiserweights and panned the entire uppercard. Others tuned in for the antics of the NWO, and wanted to kick the little guys off the show to make more time for Scott Norton and the rest of the B-Team. Is one of these perspectives inherently wrong? Of course not. But they're pretty much doomed to disagree.

Cranky Dean is far superior to 'Reaching for reasons to enjoy Koji vs. Samurai' Dean, y'all. If any of you want to find excuses to like crap, go right ahead. There are just a lot of us out there who, y'know, don't. Whether or not WWEEEEEEE is at all similar to Japanese or Mexican action, and whether or not it's "OK" to judge them against one another, doesn't change the pecking order in terms of quality.

Though I thought Cena's offense was closer to, say, ARSION rookie offense than AJW - he would fit in nicely against Yuu Yamagata, I'm betting. Yoneyama would probably turn Chunky'n'Spunky on him and beat his ass, though. Those JWP kids learn quick.

Jeff can't get much revenge on Punk after everything Punk said as a heel against Jeff came true. Jeff is where he is only because TNA gave him a second chance after he worked a PPV main event clearly blotto.
