It's a live, commercial-free Smackdown, featuring a main event of John Cena and Sheamus vs. the Big Show and Dolph Ziggler! But wait, that's not all. It's not being shown live in Canada!

Yeah, I don't get to watch the show until Friday. I'm opening the thread anyway so that people who did get to watch the show can discuss it without waiting and expecting that I'll be starting a thread. We'll see on Friday if I want to take a shot at recapping it late anyway or if I'll just be lazy and take a week off.

But for those of you who saw what happened, go nuts! This thread is your oyster!

I was there and I'm suffering from PTSD after literally a 4.5 hour taping so let me just say in brief that I looooooove the new heel group. Kind of an adorable non-traditional family -- not sure if AJ is the mother or the baby. This act puts Ziggler over the top as a major heel big deal. It also finally puts AJ in a good role (which she looks like she'll be really good at) after the GM flop. This is exactly where I wanted the Punk/Bryan/AJ thing in the summer to end up: with Bryan and AJ together as a top heel act. Hopefully all the strides he's made over the last month set him up to be in the mix for a substantial Mania program.

Why did Cesaro lose when they made sure not to beat him on Monday since he is headlining Tribute to the Troops with Cena oh well

I totally forgot about this show until just before the main event. Match was pretty good, and it's really been a banner year for Ziggler. He's having great matches with Cena (and Cena absolutely turfed him on that AA), and now he's got a Shawn Michaels-style entourage. I think Team Ziggler needs a more unified look, but other than that, there's no room to complain.

The last time The Score showed one of those commercial free shows, it ended up being a disjointed mess - here's hoping that with three days' time to edit, it will look somewhat decent.

Or maybe they'll go commercial free.

AJ's explanation for why she turned on John Cena made perfect sense to me. Or maybe I'm just going [earmuffs] crazy.

John Cena is supposed to be better. But he's an asshole.

Does this turn Vickie face? She got dropped by her longtime meal ticket in favor of a younger latina, and both of them are now full-on heel. Does she need the cougar gimmick to stay relevant to in-ring angles?

Well at least we got a reason and its somewhat coherent. The WWE has been doing this weird thing with Cena of his actions through out the last two years of being a total dick. He is a dick to Rock for almost two years. He weasels out getting fired from Vince after Punk's MITB Bank win. Demands Rey faces him after Rey wins the title that day and wins. He cries to HHH at the end of SummerSlam while Nash attacks Punk which he claims he had no idea what was going on. Cena gets title shot after title shot for a belt Punk lost. Cena wins, loses, cries about the Awesome Truth, decides Rock should be his partner, putting Rock on the spot. They win the match even though the week before Cena took care of them. He whines after the match about Rock, He continues being a little bitch til Mania where he loses to Rock in the "I have to win this match or the world will end" or some other nonsense. He doesn't, Brock shows up and he goes back to be smiling tough guy.

During most of the summer, he is going against Laurantis for some unknown reason. He stops Laurantis, cries for another title shot to Punk. He jerks around Punk and Big Show for the summer and fall. Then he has an affair with AJ that gets her fired. He denies the affair. Takes on Ziggler for the MITB shot which Ziggler rightfully won. Stops Ziggler from cashing it in and now he wants everyone to feel bad for him, because AJ saw through his act. Are they doing this on purpose or are they this bad when it comes to Cena in the writing department? If its on purpose, I take back every bad thing, I said about Vince, Steph and the entire crew, because this is genius.

I forget to mention Eve/Ryder, so add that in there as well.

Fear the Shield. I liked the visual of Mysterio's crumpled mask being dropped at Sin Cara's feet before they curb stomp him and King Kong kneedrop his leg. They need to get after 3MB just because they're can be only one three man stable in the company.

I need a giant mute bodyguard who I can get to attack people with a simple head nod. I also think A.J.'s siding with Ziggler is totally justified. Cena was too nice to her, he even took to long to actually tell her how he feels. Ziggler showed disinterest and was honest about what he thought of her upfront. Classic bad boy behavior like that is just like nectar to someone who craves drama and chasing men like AJ.

Chickbusters to collide at next year's Wrestlemania. I can't wait.

Did this Dolph/AJ story change between Monday and Tuesday?

end of Sunday: Dolph not really sure why AJ helped him
end of Monday: Dolph surprised by the kiss, Dolph not really sure what the deal is with AJ & Big E, clearly hanging back in a corner to make sure he's not attacked
start of Tuesday: AJ and Dolph have been together for a while and worked together on Sunday?

They could tell a good story here about Dolph is so arrogant that he figures he can get AJ's craziness to work for him and so is just going along with AJ's idea that he's her new boyfriend, but that depth of storytelling wasn't suggested on anything I saw on this show.

I think that's a safe assumption.

AJ played the dreaded "You want an explanation? YOU DON'T DESERVE AN EXPLANATION!" card (aka The Big Show Gambit) on Monday, the universal sign over the last decade that they turned somebody without figuring out why yet and still need a few days to come up with something. And, as others have pointed out, they have yet to adjust anything else among the rest of the women to give them a Wrestlemania payoff to Heel AJ.

Brad Maddox: A Teddy Long Project also seems like it's probably the result of coming up with AJ's heel turn between Monday and Tuesday, since there was at least a chance that the Shield/Maddox and maybe even AJ/Langston were all meant to dovetail at a certain point (and really, The Shield working for AJ seems like a move that would have tied a lot of things together more than AJ/Dolph does).

Credit, though, to whomever they dumped the directive to figure out her motivation overnight on for going back and grabbing the bowtie thing. And if there really wasn't a plan in place yet at the end of Raw, Ziggler playing confused/scared was the right call by him in the moment, building off Punk getting wiped out by Nexus and then pretending to be afraid of same when The Shield turned up.

Also, if Maddox/Long is a result of poorly planned booking, I'm probably OK with that, since I've been hoping for Heel Teddy for a while now and was really disappointed he wasn't the one who took out Kaitlyn. Of course, I'm also disappointed Sin Cara didn't join the Shield to set up Rey/Cara at Wrestlemania, so what do I know?

I only saw the interview once, live, and I will never ever go back and watch it, but I didn't think Ziggler and AJ suggested that they'd pre-planned anything. I thought Ziggler was won over by the kiss on Monday and gets a kick out of stealing Cena's girl, so he's just going with it like in that movie, Just Go With It. But I do think you're right and there was going to be a few episode build to them ending up as a united front that they decided to skip over.

I'm pretty sure they threw out all the AJ/Cena plans about two weeks ago and changed the direction from Cena & AJ: Hustle, Loyalty, And Love to the traditional Witchy Woman wrestling story. Over those couple weeks, they quickly ran through everything they'd been building up since they weren't going to need it past the PPV: AJ/Tamina, Cena and AJ kissing, and AJ/Vickie. They efficiently made AJ Salad out of AJ Shit -- between that and the Shield taking off and some smaller improvements like investing in Cesaro and making Kane & Bryan a unified top face team, they've kind of rebuilt the landscape of the promotion in a very positive way over the last month, just in time for Mania season.

It's too bad Cena/Kane/Ryder hate-embracing saga from the same time last year didn't have a similar 'fix this' button to hit. Well, it did: Ryder coming back to help Cena beat Kane, Ryder feuding with Eve and a male advocate, Ryder holding the U.S. title until dropping to Cesaro ... oh well.

I think AJ is to the women's division as the cruiserweight and X-division stars who 'graduate' and never want to go back because it's a division for j-brones.

I absolutely couldn't agree more. What first made me realize that Cena was being a total dick was when he got a title shot against Rey the same night that Rey had defeated Miz in a hard-fought battle to win his first WWE Title.

So here's Rey, competing in his second match of the night, against a fresh opponent-- AGAINST JOHN CENA-- and he didn't even have enough time to get his nameplate on the belt before he lost it. I know they had to get to Cena/Punk for SummerSlam, but seriously, Cena couldn't have waited a week?!

(EDIT REASON: Boy, did I screw up that BBCode but good.)

Well, having seen the show now, AJ's explanation certainly seems plausible for AJ. When she was with Daniel Bryan he was actively encouraging her to be at ringside (so he could use her as a shield/etc.), so to have Cena tell her that he didn't want her at ringside seems like something that would legitimately hurt her, especially since she views herself as being the top Diva on the roster. I also liked Ziggler with the 'earmuffs' line to AJ to get her to cover her ears so she wouldn't hear him say the word 'crazy'.

The show in Canada had commercials like normal, so I have no idea what I missed that you guys saw. Everything seemed to be flowing normally. Were there brief product-placement backstage skits like there were on the commercial-free Raw from a while back?

The other thing that stuck out for me on the show was the backstage scene with Team Ziggler and Big Show, with WWE camera work striking again. They were doing their best to frame the shot there to make Big E Langston look as big as they could with Big Show also in the shot, trying to cover up that Langston is actually shorter than Ziggler. It worked there, but given how the company tends to look at shorter competitors (see some of Cena's shots at Ziggler on the mic recently) it does make me worry a bit for the future.

Next week, Smackdown is pre-empted for a day in Canada, it won't air until Saturday. That means I'll be putting up a thread again but no recap. Sorry! Blame Arda Ocal!

I thought AJ's saying "That kiss [with John Cena] won a Slammy!" was probably AJ's best line delivery.

AJ and Eve are the most emotionally complex attempts at Divas character development WWE Creative has ever attempted. It's muddled, schizophrenic writing, but the two women in question have managed to run with their characters. And their characters are kind of similar.

Eve was the original 2012 crazy chick who was using Zack Ryder's affections to catch "the big fish" John Cena into a romantic entanglement, and then had a public humiliation and emotional breakdown earlier this year. (Kane was also involved.) Eve rebounded from her embarrassments by re-inventing herself as a corporate climber under the John Laurinaitis and later Booker T administrations. Eve also developed a defense mechanism of publicly insisting she's benevolent and fair-minded, projecting a positive veneer of perpetual smiles and waves to the crowd and positioning herself as a victim whenever she's attacked physically or verbally. The Divas Title is the tangible proof Eve clings to that she's as important and highly-regarded as she thinks she should be seen as; acclaim she doesn't receive from any corner in the WWE Universe, except JBL, who does point out Eve has been a good champion. Eve has also embraced the fact that she's a physical bombshell.

Yet in almost every instance, seemingly effortlessly, AJ has leapfrogged over Eve. Eve was an executive administrator, AJ was a full fledged General Manager. Eve tried to date John Cena, AJ actually did so, plus had four other boyfriends and two marriage proposals. Eve and AJ also each have issues with Kaitlyn. What Eve does have that AJ doesn't yet is the Divas Title, which AJ has been far too preoccupied to even consider going after.

Cena comes off poorly, overbearingly, or goofily enough almost all the time, so I feel like I have to stick up for him just this thrice when he was just adjacent to crap. He came out to get fired and said he would go to TNA, except he got saved by the bell and Vince was fired. He never challenged Rey, HHH booked it, not that Cena still didn't look completely uncheerable for winning. And when HHH blew an easy call and cost Cena the world title unification main event, if anything he didn't care enough: "you missed it. dang."
