WWE SmackDown! 1.30.09.

- The show opens with no pyro, no music, and Matt Hardy. He heads down to the ring with the chair that killed Jeff in hand. "Finally I don't have to share the spotlight with my brother." Hmm, guess they're going down that route. Over a video montage and some funeral-type music, Matt says that if Matt's (who's healthy and happy) survival depends on Jeff's (who's a psychological wreck) destruction, then so be it. Matt calls Jeff a huge burden and a "constant mistake." He then turns on the fans for supporting a "self-destructive screwup" while he, Matt, busted his ass for ten years trying to be a perfect role model. Matt decrees that the Hardy Boys no longer exist and he no longer has a brother. Crowd wants Jeff, but they ain't getting him.

**This was a nice promo. Matt did a good job, and did the best he could not to let his accent get in the way. Matt still hasn't explained about the attacks, but his tone suggests he was not behind them. I, for one, enjoyed the montage and music treatment.

Match 1: R-Truth over THE Brian Kendrick via Axe Kick in 2:11. Zeke got himself tossed to begin the match. It was what you'd call an Impact Special, and the guys got no time to showcase their skills.

*Apparently, TBK has gotten himself in hot water over not paying heed to backstage agents. Dumbass.

- We get a package for Wrestlemania I.

Match 2: MVP over Chavo Guerrero via Drive-By Kick in 5:12. So MVP is a face now? The crowd had some nice MVP chants going throughout the match. Chavo is always solid and this was perfectly acceptable wrestling.

- Postmatch, MVP stakes his claim for "his US title." I'm all for Shelton-MVP, even though it is just an extension of the WWE policy of ALL NEGRO MUST FEUD.

- We get an Elimination Chamber package.

Match 3: Umaga over Jimmy Wang Yang via Samoan Spike in 1:44. Umaga is back! With new music that is not as good as the old one, but I'll forgive that. He looks sharp.

- Vladimir Kozlov trains! Unfortunately he no longer suplexes punching bags.

Match 4: The Undertaker over Mark Henry via Hell's Gate in 5:26. What's up with UT doing matches on the midcard? This was a decent match that did a nice job of not making Mizark look horrible in the loss. UT qualifies for the Elimination Chamber as a result.

- Recap of Mickey Rourke's comments and Chris Jericho's appearance on Larry King.

- Vickie Guerrero brings out Edge for another WWE Title celebration. Edge tells the fans that they're "WRONG WRONG WRONG" about the Jeff Hardy accident allegations. Edge wants to open a line of communications with the fans so they can tell their loved ones that they spoke with the 7-time World champ. He actually gets the crowd to stand up, but asking them to say sorry to him is a bit too much. And then, in an awesome markout moment, for the benefit of those with flash photography, Edge gives a five-second pose! GOLD! That alone makes this show worth it. Edge slops a wet one onto Vickie, but Big Show interrupts to come down and give her a big hug. Edge is less than pleased. Show wants to touch the title, but Edge is not going to let that happen. Edge and Vickie leave, and Show is in action...

Match 5: Big Show over Festus via KTFO in 2:39. Festus nearly deadlifted Show. Other than that, it was just a squash. Show chokeslams Jesse for good measure afterwards. As a result of this win, Show qualifies for the Elimination Chamber.

- Backstage, Eve is minding her own business until Michelle McCool comes in talk trash. Eve wants none of that shit and slaps her. And that's it! WTF? McCool gets slapped by a backstage interviewer and she takes it lying down?

- We hit the Vault to find Chavo Guerrero v Rey Mysterio from No Way Out 2004. I have that show on DVD. It also has a **** main event in Eddie Guerrero-Brock Lesnar. Check that out.

- Raw recap. Those are some crap-tastic punches from Shane McMahon.

Triple Threat: Triple H over Vladimir Kozlov and The Great Khali via Pedigree to Khali in 9:01. The result was pretty obvious here, and this match pretty much sucked as per expectations. An unworthy end to an otherwise ok show. Triple H qualifies for the Elimination Chamber.

- End Show.

Wrestling Counter: 27 minutes.

** An OK show, but comparing to last week's awesome show, this fell way short. It's not offensive as such, but all the undercard action looked like it could use 2 more minutes, and the main event sucked big balls. Edge provided me with the Markout of the Year candidate, however, so most all is forgiven.

I thought Matt Hardy's rationalization was on the weak side. It might still have worked for me, though, if they hadn't been playing that damn music over his promo. It just killed that segment for me.

I thought the rationalization was fine up until he blamed the fans. That was just stupid...he gets the biggest pops on the show like every week. It seems like a rule now that when turning heel, you MUST blame the fans, as if WWE doesn't have enough confidence in the person to actually go heel without the cheap heat of blaming the fans.

And yeah, the music and video montage was a bit over-dramatic.

I predict the man that brings Jeff back to television will be Christian and it will be a Christian/Jeff Hardy vs Edge/Matt Hardy feud

Corollary: you MUST also use the phrase "each and every one of you" while blaming the fans.

I've always wondered that too. And if they are allowed to use it, why not go *back* to it after losing the right to the scratch logo? I mean, there have been logos that have lasted a LOT longer than the block logo.
