The Quick and Dirty for WWE SmackDown! 12.19.08 from Baltimore, MD.

- The show opens with a recap of Jeff Hardy's epic win at Armageddon. Jeff comes out to the super-special champ treatment, with confetti and pyro everywhere. He tells the crowd to "stand up and go a little crazy" and they do. After about 5 minutes of that, Edge comes out to call him a fluke. "One good day out of 365 does not make you a champion!" Edge pours his heart out, so Jeff calls him a "liar" and gets the crowd to chant along. Funny. Edge announces Edge v Matt Hardy and Kozlov v Jeff Hardy for tonight. He calls Jeff a "screw-up," so Jeff asks him if he's done and drops him with the Twist of Fate. Awesome! Fun promo.

Match 1: Hurricane Helms and R-Truth over MVP and Shelton Benjamin when Helms pinned Benjamin with the Eye of the Hurricane in 5:33 Heel miscommunication led to the loss when MVP accidentally kicked Shelton in the head. It was an ok match, with a little Shelton/MVP drama thrown in, as Shelton kept refusing to tag MVP in. On the bright side, MVP didn't take the pin. I approve. It's Helms v Shelton for the US title next week.

- Backstage, Vickie goes off on Chavo for bringing her cold coffee and slaps it in his face. See, that's why she's the most over heel on the show. Edge shows up, freaking out about what's happening. Vickie tells him to get it together and take care of Matt Hardy tonight.

Match 2: John Morrison over Festus via Moonlight Drive in 2:30. It wasn't even a match. The finish came about when Jesse tried to hit Miz with the bell, but missed and accidentally rang it, causing Festus to freeze.

- Post match, Miz farts on Festus and gets the fake pin. Morrison SURFS(!) on him. Fart jokes? C'mon. Miz and Morrison can do way better.

- I guess the From the Vault segment replaces the DX ads. Anyway, it's MVP v Ric Flair from the Rumble 2008. It was one of Flair's retirement matches, and he gets the clean win after slapping on the Figure-4.

- Backstage, Matt Hardy talks to Eve. He puts Jeff over and gets in the line of the night: "How does it feel to lose everything you have and see it on a Hardy?" Burn!

Match 3: Edge over Matt Hardy via Spear in 15:09. Pretty solid, if unspectacular. Edge's diligent arm-work featured in the finish, so I'm a happy man. The crowd seemed to sit on their hands, though, and I'm not entirely sure why Matt's taking a lot of hits recently. Maybe it's for the rumored Matt v Jeff storyline.

*Aside: As good as that sounds on paper and in theory, with both Hardy brothers at the peak of their overness, I'm not sold on this story. I don't think either Matt or Jeff can play a natural heel and get the crowd to boo them. Especially Matt.

Match 4: Ezekiel Jackson over Carlito via Uranage Slam in 3:29. Zeke was rocking red tights that threatened to burst out of my TV. This was an extended squash, the only highlight of which was the wicked bump THE Brian Kendrick took when he tried to do the Sliced Bread #2 off the apron and Primo threw him off.

#1 Contendership for the Divas Title: Maryse over Maria via French Kiss in 3:36. "French Kiss" is the name of Maryse's Snap DDT, you perverts! Maryse totally carried this match. She's coming up by leaps and bounds.

- Post match, Maryse walks up to Michelle McCool, who had taken a ringside seat, and makes a few hand gestures. I guess Michelle's heel turn went to the dogs. When Maryse touches the Divas title, Michelle knocks her off quite forcefully. Maryse goes back to making stupid hand gestures, except from a distance. Those have got to go.

- Backstage, MVP is a sad panda. Mr. Kennedy drops by to offer solace. MVP says he's only here to plug the movie, so he does it for him. Kennedy says he was here to tell him to keep his chin up, because despite being flat broke, MVP still gives so much. That brings no joy to MVP, so Kennedy screams his name in MVP's face. Twice. These guys have always had a funny kind of backstage chemistry that shows in their segments.

- JR says that Batista got a concussion as a result of the punt last week on Raw, and that he's not sure when Dave will return.

- Backstage, The Great Khali confesses to having found his soul mate in Mae Young. NO!

Non-title: Jeff Hardy over Vladimir Kozlov via DQ in 7:21. Edge runs in after Jeff had the upper hand with a few Whispers in the Wind. Edge and Vlad beat on Jeff, but Trips makes the save. Edge eats Pedigree and Vlad bails when Trips has the sledgehammer. Jeff drops a Swanton on Edge for good measure to close out the show.

*Aside:If I was Vlad, I'd be pretty pissed that Edge cost me the opportunity to beat Jeff in a non-title match. Vlad dominated that match, and a couple of high-risk moves were hardly going to keep him down.

- End show.

Wrestling Counter: 38 minutes.

** A pretty filler show with a throwaway vibe to it. It didn't do anything to advance the main-event picture beyond the established players. The crowd contributed to the nature of the show by sitting on its hands. Apart from one solid match, there is nothing here to check out. The undercard keeps me interested, as does MVP/Kennedy.

Pretty solid Smackdown (on the heels of a great PPV). Jeff got the opening deserving of a victory at Mania. Jeff has never really been known for his mic skills. He did pretty good tonight though. Keep it short, keep it sweet & let the other guy do the talking.

The Edge fury story telling was perfect tonight. He was so distraught that he couldn't focus (at least not until after the commercial break). Loved the quick jab from Matt...What's it feel like to lose something you love wrapped around a Hardy. Kudos to the writers on that one, continuity is cool.

MVP is AWESOME. I really believe that he is feeling down. The promo with Mr. Kennedy, Kennedy and him was great.

Wow Marise.

Being snowed in here in Boston, I watched Smackdown live for the first time since I can't even remember when.

I couldn't put my finger on what was off about Hurricane Helms since his return and I finally realized: he's wrestling a heavyweight style. I wasn't used to seeing him like this. He's noticably bigger and not wrestling the Cruiser-style, which is pretty much dead in WWE. I liked Helms' inverted Unprettier finish, but I wonder if he'll get to keep it if Christian returns. (Candice will have to drop her Unprettier too if that happens.)

I would actually like to see a Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy feud or match somewhere down the line. I might be the only one; the Hardy faithful don't want these two going at it. The Hardy fans are super marky for the Hardys and as we found with the Edge/Lita situation years ago, they take everything seriously and personally. Matt and Jeff would have to work their fans on their MySpace and various other means they communicate with them. Probably unlikely they'd feud.

It would be so easy to turn Matt though. Matt has this natural heelish dickness to him. He was a really good heel earlier in the decade when he was Version 1. And it would be natural to play up jealousy towards his little brother being the WWE Champion, while he's relegated to being the "World Champion" of the C brand, one who has lost two non-title matches just this week alone. No one honestly believes the ECW Title is on the same level of prestige as the WWE Title, despite Matt's claims that both Hardys are now World Champions. Matt must see the only way he could get that WWE Title for himself would be going through his brother.

Maryse is so wonderful. And it's no surprise McCool sits right next to the announce desk but isn't given a headset; no one wants to hear that terrible voice.

MVP is great, but I really, really hate Kennedy. What's the point of him? What is he supposed to be? What's his character? He's just the I Didn't Do It Boy; he's been yelling his name for 3 and a half years. He brings nothing else to the table. He's not funny, he's not threatening, he's not cool, he's not a very good wrestler. KK makes me want to FF.

Kennedy was ok when he was wrestling. He was a poor man's Jericho and his push made you believe that he was threatening, or at least could deliver in the ring. Now he's not wrestling, and the real Jericho is here, so his act's gotten real stale real quick.

You must have missed the entire run of Matt Hardy v1. He was one of the best heels in the entire company at that point. Even his chyron drew heat.

For Miz & Morrison, 2 Slammys > Brand Split. They can and will feud with anyone and everyone! In fact, here in Philly there was an olde school pre-taped bit from Matt Striker schilling for a house show in Trenton & the GAB on PPV next year here, which was interrupted by Miz & Morrisson, who went off mocking Philadelphia and Rocky and cheesesteaks. Actually, it was slotted into the show itself pretty well, as Striker mentioned the match with Festus and going into the break, J.R. has specifically taped a break that mentioned the Phillies and segued into hyping the Hardy/Edge match.

Will this lead to ANOTHER FEUD OVER COFFEE?!?!

To answer the original poster's question about "From The Vault", my understanding is that those segments in India are aired to fill in the space left by the many commercial breaks. I don't know if you have no commercial breaks at all in India, or if local television rules just mandate a maximum amount that WWE shows normally exceed. From The Vault fills in the gap either way.

Was there a commercial break for you in the Edge/Hardy match?

I get the commercial breaks in the matches, except some times when the break during the main event is cut. The show normally runs short by eight-ten minutes. I don't get the DX merchandise ads that everyone's been talking about. The feed here comes from Sky Sports over in the UK. I'm not aware of any limit on commercial breaks here in India, but it is possible.

I get the feeling it is not too difficult for MVP to act down or frustrated at this point. Angle or not, losing every match for 3 months has to take it's toll on you.

I hope they're not attempting to turn MVP face during this losing streak. He's been portrayed as a pretty sad guy for the last couple of weeks, with not even heels wanting to team with him (like Shelton last week on SD). Plus, he tried to get in the crowd's good graces after the loss to R-Truth.

In any case, MVP works way better as a dickish better-than-you heel than he could as a heel, me thinks. I think his offense is more suited for heeldom.

The only way Porter could be a face without a complete scrapping of the current gimmick would be as an RVD-esque "everyone's favorite wrestler" type gimmick. He's the guy we all pay to see, the reason we watch wrestling, etc. He really doesn't have the charisma to pull that off, though.

And I wouldn't say he was trying to get on the fans good side last week, so much as he was cutting a "poor pitiful me" promo, like every heel that loses a big match does.

Who did he beat in his last win? That'd be a good person to end the streak. Or, and this'll NEVER happen, but still, end two streaks with one match and put him over Kozlov.

I think his last win was by countout against Festus on Aug 22 -- recap here (411mania.com). I don't feel like there's a lot of resonance in that route, though.
