Recap for SmackDown, May 7, 2010, taped in North Charleston, SC.

- We open with a Matt Hardy promo. Hardy shows us videos of repeated beatings by Drew McIntyre over the past few weeks and says he's not medically cleared to be here. He asks if Drew wants him gone. McIntyre comes out to answer that and reminds us how many months ago Vince McMahon himself endorsed him as the Chosen One. Hardy has no real comeback for that, so Drew continues by saying he's gonna beat some sense into Matt. That leads to a brawl, which Drew dominates. Teddy Long comes out to try and put a stop to it, but Drew won't listen. Drew gets suspended and stripped of the IC title, but he decides that kicking Hardy in the head one last time is worth it all. He gets fired for that, however. Didn't see that coming. Several people push Drew up the ramp, all while he makes threatening gestures towards Long. He says Vince will hear about this, before finally they manage to get him off the ramp. Maybe this was an attempt to freshen up the IC title picture without making Drew look bad, but I don't know. I guess either Vince reinstates Drew back on SD or he goes to Raw. Poor Matt Hardy got to look like a chump during all of this, though. 0 for 1.

- Backstage, Josh Matthews catches up with Teddy Long, but he has no answers.

Match 1: MVP over Luke Gallows via Playmaker in 4 minutes. Rey attacked CM Punk through the crowd and DDTd him on the floor, which distracted Gallows, who had the upper hand when Serena had distracted MVP, and that led to the finish. Gallows is always serviceable in the ring, and I'm a fan of MVP, so 1 for 2.

- In the ring, CM Punk is less than pleased. He repeatedly calls Rey a coward and calls him out. Rey comes out and says it's basically a taste of Punk's own medicine and asks about the masked man. Punk says he has no idea what Rey is talking about and that Rey is probably on hallucinogenic drugs. He says he knows Rey wants to be saved and wants to join the SES. That's probably a side effect of those hallucinogens. Rey proposes a match at OTL, where they finally combine the stips so each side has to put something on the line. Punk calls this Rey's moment of clarity, but Rey says they don't have to fight - he will join the SES if Punk shaves his head right now! Well, that's not gonna happen. Rey says the SES sends a good message but the messenger is bad. He calls Punk selfish, asking why his hair is so sacred where everyone else has to be bald. Rey says he leads by example, but he's no savior, and there's nothing that can save Punk from the 619. Punk is one of the 5 best promos in the WWE right now, and this was a strong effort from Rey. 2 for 3.

Match 2: Simply Flawless over Kelly Kelly and Tiffany (Layla pins Kelly Kelly) in 3 minutes. McCool kicked both the faces in the head, allowing Layla to get her finisher ("Layout"?) on Kelly Kelly. Kelly sucks in the ring, and the other three were not enough to counter that on this night. 2 for 4.

- Teddy Long announces a four-man IC title tourney starting this week. Finals will be next week.

IC Title Tournament Semi-Final: Kofi Kingston over Dolph Ziggler via Trouble in Paradise in 12 minutes. Fine TV match. I wonder if the draft really helped Dolph's prospects, though. It inserts Kofi Kingston and Christian as immediate competition to Dolph, and I'm not sure if the E would pick Dolph over either of those two. 3 for 5.

IC Title Tournament Semi-Final: Christian over Cody Rhodes via Killswitch in 14 minutes. Good to see it get time, though the result probably was not in much doubt. Cody looked good in defeat and got in quite a bit of offense. I can't help but think that this is Christian's big test and if he can carry the crowd with him, it will do his main event chances a world of good. 4 for 6.

- Swagger comes out to list some Jack Facts, like how he was nominated for an ESPY. Seriously, who keeps track of those things? They just cut him off to go to a break, which is kind of sad. Back in, Jack is still listing out facts, including being a part of the National Honor Society. He finally gets to the point by saying that while Show was out taking special ed classes and shortcuts, Swagger was winning championships. At OTL, Swagger will take Show to school. I generally enjoy Swagger on the mic, but this was too long-winded and took forever to make a point. The break in the middle was unhelpful too. 4 for 7.

Non Title: Kane over Jack Swagger by DQ via repeated head-bashing into an exposed turnbuckle in 5 minutes. Postmatch, Swagger continues his beatdown before celebrating with the title. That takes too long, allowing Kane to land a big boot and prepare the announcers' table. Swagger fights back to send him into the post, but Big Show (who was out for commentary) chokeslams him through the table! You don't see that everyday. Show stands tall as we end the show. 5 for 8.

Wrestling Counter: 38 minutes.

Score: 5 for 8: A typically solid SmackDown show, again featuring plenty of good wrestling and a couple of interesting story arcs. We'll see in coming weeks what the plan is with Drew and who out of Kofi and Christian will the WWE look to as a breakout star on SmackDown. The Swagger/Show feud is taking good shape and we finally get a hard-to-predict Punk/Mysterio match with stipulations affecting both sides. Good episodic TV building towards a PPV.

Big Show got a nice pop when he came out during Swagger's match!

I'm interested to see the IC finals. I hope Kofi wins and Christian goes after the World title.

Other than that, I think Dolph Ziggler should have won the tournament.

I agree that I would have liked Dolph to win the IC title, but Kofi just could not take a loss to him right now. Kofi's still hovering between the mid- and upper card, and I'd hate to see him get knocked back down. Really, neither he nor Christian would be helped much by an IC title win, although if they wanted to run a champ vs. champ program with one of them and Swagger, that could be fun.

Drew's firing was weak. That's at worst a mudhole stomping at ringside. even if Teddy ordered him to step off, his aggression didn't seem worth a pink slip. Now if he had used the Future Shock a few times on a chair -- something distinctive and violent -- the termination would be warranted. Matt literally asked for it.

Drew's departure doesn't make him look formidable, doesn't nudge him into a cool heel, and doesn't affect his win-loss record. He wasn't pinned for the belt. That's the only benefit of this loss of title and job.

But still ... weak.

Well, Teddy is a lousy excuse for a GM anyways, with his blatant breaking of rules in favor of the faces.
It totally befit his character. And I'm sure it'll be set straight somehow.
If Drew doesn't move to Raw, a triple threat at the ppv doesn't sound impossible.

I guess either Drew moves to RAW (thus robbing Smackdown of yet another upper-tier wrestler) or he's brought back to Smackdown via Deus Ex McMahonchina. SD needs all of the help they can get, so hopefully he stays put on the blue show. On RAW, he'd be behind too many other heels --- Jericho, Miz, Edge, Sheamus, and Batista if he sticks around.

I smell a 30 day suspension. Why else would they kill his IC title reign so abruptly?

For the record, the only thing I read on the newsboards was that Drew eloped with Tiffany this week, not that he failed a drug test.

And that answers your question. Honeymoon, followed by the invisible hand of Aurora Rose Levesque.

It was not a 'weak' firing. Teddy has been having problems with Drew in the storyline for weeks and gave him several chances, first suspending him and then stripping him of the title. It wasn't a random 'oh you kicked his head in, you're fired!'. Because he did that last week and wasn't fired.

You answered your own question. He must really be the Chosen One if they not only allowed him time off for his honeymoon, they also kept him strong by not having him job the IC title. I guarantee if it was a 30 day suspension, he'd have jobbed like he has several times already.

I laughed so hard (after rewinding to see if I heard it correctly) when Striker said something like "If Kofi, who is from Ghana, wins the IC title he will be the pride of Prince Nana"

Now I root for Kofi to win it, so Striker can tell us about the great party they threw in Kingston's honor at 'the embassy'.

Now I am more interested in Punk and Rey as the WWE has made this feud a little bit better. Another Hair vs. SES match? Sure. But to me it was pretty interesting to see Rey saying he would join the SES right there and then if Punk shaved his head. Punk is a solid heel while Rey has been a good face which has made this feud pretty good thus far.

Now that Shelton is gone, I guess the WWE has no problem giving the 'Paydirt' finishing maneuver to MVP (as it was seen last week also). I guess it called the "Play of the day"? I think that is what Matt Striker said it was called.

As for the suspension, I thought it was wierd because Matt Hardy actually did ask for it as he wanted to fight McIntyre and pretty much asked for it. I guess this means he will either be sent to Raw or come back via Vince McMahon. If he is sent to Raw, he probably will get lost within the shuffle even if he is the "chosen one". I think the suspension would have been more legit if per say if Drew put Matt in a more serious medical state to the point where Matt couldn't even have come out or something of the other and Teddy Long suspended him because T-Lo has to make sure the health of its Smackdown superstars aren't in jeopardy or something of the other.

As for the IC tourney, I really don't know who to root for to win in the finals. Christian is due for a feud with Swagger (assuming Swagger keeps the title versus Big Show at the next PPV) so I will probably go with Kofi Kingston. It would be interesting to see Christian win the IC belt and have a champion vs. champion feud but if Christian were to win assumingly, another IC tourney would have to take place and I would think the WWE wouldn't do another one soon after they held one on Smackdown.

There really was no match between Swagger and Kane but the chokeslam from Big Show on the announce table was definitely legit. The table seemingly broke a split second after Swagger was slammed on the table. It probably didn't help that Swagger was also chokeslammed on the edge of the table which may have been the worst of it.

Overall, not a bad Smackdown as it had it moments with some of the matches and feuds leading up to Over the Limit.

Having seen the rest of the show, wow, when did Cody Rhodes get interesting? A springboard enziguri and a moonsault press? He might be the steal of the draft if he keeps this up.

It truly is amazing how much better a guy can look with time to work a competitive match, as opposed to being a punching bag for ME faces.

At first, I thought SD got hosed in the draft when most of the guys I watched the show for (Jericho, Edge, Morrison) went to Raw. But now, it seems like maybe it will give a lot of guys like Swagger, Cody, Christian, and Kofi a big chance to blossom. As long as Taker stays on vacation.

But I am not sure what good will come of Christian winning the IC belt after Edge branded him as a guy who has never won a World Title last week. Not sure what good losing to Kofi will do for him either.

I can't believe no-one's pegged last week's E&C encounter as the obvious "future world title match set-up segment" that it was. If they really didn't see money there they'd have simply had a match last week and been done with it.

What bad would come of it?
I think Kofi is winning though; he needs to get back on track. But I think Christian is the master of the 15 minute TV match so it should be really good.

I saw it more as "everybody going to Raw does jobs on the way out but we don't want to beat Edge so he'll just get sent packing in a fight." Although if Big Show can 'headline' with Swagger in the way-secondary Smackdown title feud then there's no reason Christian, his best opponent can't either.

I think Christian would've gotten a more decisive beatdown in on him if that were the case. Shit was left hanging. And if that WERE the case why not just job Christian to Edge, or pair Edge up with someone different? I think they know what they've got with those two.

I thought it was just a good way of making clear that Edge was a heel once again.
He was pretending that he still loved the fans, Christian came out said "I know you. You're full of BS" and that was it.

It also helped Christian, as it put him in a segment with a true main-eventer, he got to show his verbal skills and held his own.

But a future title feud? Alas, I didn't see that.
