After reading the reports online that the WWE is scrapping their current Saturday night lineup, I decided to set my tivo, see just how bad it could be...

To my surprise, it wasn't bad. It wasn't bad at all.

Infact, Velocity was MUCH better than this weeks smackdown, featuring a 5 STAR main event that should have easily been on the main Thursday show. Rey v. Kidman v. Akido v. Nunzio in a fatal four way had all the action and excitment you SHOULD expect from a cruiserweight matchup. I felt like I was watching ECW for a second there.

Akido was REALLY impressive, he does this Mortal Kombat move where he throws a guy in the corner and kick-walks up and over him, pretty cool spot.

Kidman and Rey had some pretty sweet spots together. Kidman drop-kicked the shit of Rey a few times.

The match even had an "upset" winner, when Nunzio hit a top rope ddt for the win.

Would this have normally been rated 5 stars? I think so. However, it probably also stood out so much to me because Smackdown has been sucking shit lately.

I then caught the first segment of Confidential, which featured the Rock's recent media blitz. I gotta say, I loved it. The Rock is hilarious and can and should have a 100% bonified run as a MAJOR hollywood superstar...

Next up was a CLASSIC matchup between Marty Jannety and HBK from Royal Rumble '93!! Good shit! So awesome hearing Heenan and Monsoon calling a match!!

I'm assuming the shows arent this good every week, or more people would be watching...but what I did see was as good as, if not better than most of the "main" WWE programming of late.

Anyone else see it?

Demott made a capital mistake calling one of the matches. One of job guys they brought out for Holly and Billy Gunn went to the Shawn Michaels wrestling academy, and Demott pointed out that so did WWE superstars Paul London and *Lance* Cade.

Oops. That's okay, it's not as though they had a few days to edit the commentary or anything.

He went to the J.R. School of Announcing. Ross probably even fed him the line. It's LANCE BY GAWD!

The main was really swank. Nunzio is fucking awesome. He makes me glad that sometimes I go way out of my way to catch Velocity. I love how hardcore he sells even the littlest spots. And that DDT was really cool too.

One other fun moment from Velocity was the really stiff hug that Holly and Gunn gave eachother. They tried to be really manly about it and ended up just touching their arms to each others sides.

Maybe I should put something clever down here....

I don't catch Velocity every single week, but I'm glad I did this week. That match was indeed awesome, match of the week and better than the Wrestlemania crusier match(it should have been such). They had no business cutting to a commercial during the beginning when the match was ALREADY pacing well. And yes, Akio is the man, so is Nunzio I'm very surprised he won.

Now I'm assuming Confidential wasn't a repeat, but I could have sworn that the Michaels vs Jannetty match had already before been featured on the show. Am I right, I don't think they've ever featured the same match on two different episodes. Especially since the last show I saw it on was only a few months ago.

But yeah, good action tonight, Confidential wasn't really special overall, but this WAS a good night for wrestling even if the Confidential match was a repeat. There was even an impressive spot in the Holly-Gunn when Gunn drop toe-holded the jobber guy into Holly's leg drop(reminded me of some of the fun tag stuff he did in the Smoking Gunns) How was earlier match with I think London-Doug Basham? I didn't catch that.

Aha, thus explaining your inflated rating!

Pretty cool if you haven't seen him do it on TNA two years ago, or WCW Worldwide 3 1/2 years ago...

(Also, I think it's still "Akio" unless they changed it again - http://smackdown.wwe.com/ superstars/akio/index.html)

Would this have normally been rated 5 stars? I think so.
I just wanted to see that again. Credibility plus plus plus!

I saw (most) of the match, and even some of the Billy/Bob squash. The c'weight match was good (better than anything on Smackdown lately), but 5 stars is a bit much. I thought it'd be a forgone conclusion that Rey Rey would win, but they SWERVED~! me.

Confidential is always pretty good and velocity usaully has one good match.

I remember one week the best match all week was RVD vs. Y2J
for the IC title(3.3*)that is until they aired velocity and the main Event was Rhyno vs. Kidman(4.2*)

Pretty fun match, even if it was nothing more than a collection of spots. Not as good as Knoble/London from about a month ago (in terms of "Velocity MOTY"), but fun anyway.

If I read correctly, they aren't getting rid of Velocity, just moving it to earlier in the evening.

Yeah, 7 PM. So at least they'll be consistent with the designated jobber shows (Heat and that both on at the same time).

It was especially cool 20+ years ago when Tiger Mask did it
in a WWF ring if I'm not mistaken. But seriously, entertaining match nonetheless. ***** though? *** maybe.

ok i feel like I should make something clear..

I gave it a 5 star rating ONLY in comparison to the CRAP that they have been runnung on Smackdown latley.

It was 1000% better than the WMXX match and with the swerve finish, I just enjoyed it. Sure I was being liberal with the rating, but my point was simply that this match was great.

As for WCW worldwide 3 and a half years ago, theres NO way I was watching it...my bad.

I watched the match on the recommendation of the board and, while enjoyable, I wouldn't dare rate it over ***. The flow the match built up in the opening minutes was cut off by an abrupt break, I wasn't emotionally invested in any of the characters, it was a pile of spots that didn't tell me any semblance of a story and I was distracted by this uncanny Mick Foley lookalike watching on in the crowd that I hadn't noticed for the entire show.

That said it was easily the match of the week and one that I'd gladly watch again. Plus BK and Nunzio were on fire as usual (I was a tad bit disappointed with Rey and Akio though as all they seemed to do was break up pins with dropkicks).

So, yeah, ***.

What? We're grading on the curve now? In that case the Savage/Steamboat WM3 match gets *******************(19 stars) due to it being 70 bazillion times better than anything at the time.

Yeah, I also love NXT! It's been a long time since I actually looked forward to watching a wrestling show like I now do with NXT every week. And so far they've always delivered a good program as well. NXT may very well be the future of WWE? O_O
