Well, that would certainly spoil ekedolphin's hard work of looking at possible Rey matchups for WM!

Did Booker T's favor for Orton come into play at all? I thought Orton cashing in on Booker's favor whether it be Booker T helping him or swapping numbers or something, would've been a good way for Orton to either win it or look smart only to have Rey upset him. Oh well.

Perhaps they're saving that for the rumored stealing of Rey's world title shot? Booker T helps Orton steal it, which allows Orton to go on to face Angle/UT and gives Rey a ready-made feud with Booker T for causing him to miss out on the WrestleMania main event.

There's your Rey Rey consolation prize ready-written. Orton cashes in his favour with Booker by enlisting his help in beating Mysterio for the title shot. Orton moves onto Angle, and Rey goes after the US Title to keep him busy at the big dance. They've set it up in annoyingly perfect fashion.

EDIT: Hokey beat me to it. Darn. :-) If they're gonna do this, they'd better get it done it quick. Letting the fans accept Rey as the number one contender for a few weeks before snatching it out from under them will only exacerbate the problem.

just watched the rumble match a second time...did anyone already mention how matt hardy got booked in this thing? viscera simulated gay sex on him in the middle of a ring full of guys and then eliminated him easily.

wow.

booker T's new "old look" was interesting.

I still say when HHH got eliminated was one of the hot moments of the night.

The only question I would have is HOW. How are they going to justify it? It's not like Orton was eliminated by a fluke. There was no outside interference against him. He can't say it was wrong. It was as fair and square as can be. How can they coherently write this so that Rey would put up his title shot? Taunting about Eddie?

He could always just RKO Rey and sign the contract. Hell, it worked for Shawn two years ago, even though it made no sense.

At this point, if Orton HAS to be in the title match, make it a triple threat (Elimination rules please!) with Angle and Rey. If Rey doesn't win, so be it. As for the WWE title, if they're bound and determined to do HHH/Cena, I'm praying they do a double turn in the month leading up to it.

People will absolutely freaking HATE this, no matter how it plays out exactly, guaranteed.

This is all just...mind-boggling. Seriously, my friend and I sat there in the bar for a few minutes after the show concluded just looking absolutely dumbfounded, and it carried over into the car ride home. But, as stupid as the placement and booking of that show was last night, now they're going to bury the ONE REDEEMING FACTOR of the PPV for most people who saw it.

You know, he may not be the next Hulk Hogan, but people fucking LOVE Mysterio and would shell out money to see him get a shot at the title and possibly win it. The guy they booed unmercifully for three months even though he was supposed to be the big face against the guy who seems to headline every single year? Eh, not so much.

You have a guy like Mysterio who right now, even before the win, is your most over (healthy) guy in the company hands down. Why WOULDN'T you try to push him? Hell, why not give Cena time off? It's not like you absolutely NEED him to headline Wrestlemania or else the very foundations of the wrestling industry will crumble in to dust. I...yeah. Again, I just don't get it.

As far as Orton goes, I feel like his character's not even remotely ready for that shot against Angle...I mean, the guy has spent the entire past year feuding with the Undertaker. And that's it. Seriously, think about it: one full calendar year, one single feud. And it didn't even seem to really give him any more rub as a heel than he had when that feud started. *shrug*

I don't know. I...yeah. Dunno.

I suspect that if they're setting up Orton to main event and win the title, 'Taker will win the title at NWO and drop it to Orton at 'Mania. After all, Undertaker went over in the two most important matches in his fued with Orton - the WM XXII match and the HIAC match at Armageddon. I know 'Taker gets booked strong, but it makes no sense to not give Orton the blowoff win if they're pushing him as a main eventer. Or not - maybe Rey actually will get the shot.

I dunno, this far into it I tend to bet they're going to let Taker retire undefeated at Wrestlemanias.

Grrr, I am so mad about this hypothetical booking! I hate how they're conspiring to hold Rey Mysterio down by having him draw #2 and win the Royal Rumble! And maybe he won't even get the title shot! I mean, sure, it's a theory that people on the Interweb pulled out of their collective ass, but it still might happen so it may as well be a foregone conclusion! I am so fucking angry! Grrr!

Considering it was reported by Meltzer yesterday afternoon, it's a wee bit overdramatic to act like this is just a matter of armchair pundits being paranoid that Mysterio isn't going to get the shot. After all, both champs are faces and so is Mysterio so you'd think that something has to give there unless they go with the first face vs face title match at 'Mania in forever.

I always find it funny how people flip flop on the idea of what seems believable and/or stupid and/or too over-the-top and/or what does or doesn't expose wrestling, and/or a smart or stupid booking decision. When it's wrestlers you hate it's the end of the world, but when it's wrestlers you like, you clap and go nuts. Funny...

Here's the bottom line...while it's cool that Rey Mysterio won the Royal Rumble...all of this talk about him being a champion or being a better draw is a load of crap. I'm sorry, but it's true.

I like Rey and I think it would be interesting for him to win the title yea, maybe the novelty of a 5ft Heavyweight champion would sell for a while, but in the long run it would just be weird...and you know why? Because Rey Mysterio is 5ft tall and 150lbs. How is he a believable World Champion?

There's that psychology again...the bane of the IWC and "smarks" everywhere.

Bill Watts, all his stupidities aside, used to quiz his wrestlers on the believablity of their character and their potential by imagining said wrestler getting into a fight with some random Joe.

Let's use Rey Mysterio... Being the world champion (generally) means you're not only the best wrestler, but also one of the toughest people around. So, if 5ft/150lbs Rey Mysterio gets into a fight with the much bigger Random Joe outside of a bar, who (based on straight, general odds because we all know that just being big doesn't make you a good fighter) who do you think is going to win the fight? NOT Rey Mysterio. What would he do to hurt Random Joe? Do a super mega hijo whatever plancha from off a car? No. In fact, it's more than likely that Rey would become a lawn dart again like he when he tried to fight Nash after the nWo started.

A lot of you wonder and get mad at the fact that bigger guys don't bump, sell, and flop around like a fish like some of the smaller wrestlers do..and it's because they aren't supposed to bump like that because it's not all that believable.

Rey Mysterio doesn't need to be a champion to get over or draw. He is an attraction draw just like Andre was.

That's just Rey's deal. He's not a world champion. He can wrestle with heavyweights all he wants, but he is not nor ever will be one.

Well, I find it's more of a drastic change in booking than anything else. Eddie Guerrero (5'7; 210) and Benoit (5'10", 220) were both World Champions a couple years back and fans bought it because it was a natural progression of what had been going on: Benoit had been fighting the Triple Hs of the world since he arrived, and Guerrero could make up for any size difference with cheating.

Mysterio's WWE career has mostly been in the cruiserweight division, struggling to beat guys like Chavo Guerrero, Jamie Noble and Billy Kidman. THIS, for better or worse, is the reality that the booking to this point has provided. Rey CAN (and has) beaten guys like Big Show & Kevin Nash, but that's been the exception rather than the rule.

You can insist it won't work and explain why it shouldn't work all you want, but if the fans buy it, then it works. They more than accept Mysterio competing with bigger guys, and he's the biggest ratings draw on Smackdown. End of story.

Does that guarantee he'll be a successful champion? Impossible to say. But there's absolutely nothing that points to guaranteeing he won't be. You can go on and on and on about believability and bar fights, but if the fans accept him then the fans accept him. And the fans accept him.

I don't think it is as simple as "fans accept him." Everyone is always talking about the casual viewer, which is the key market that I always hear people on the boards say are the people WWE needs. Well, I don't think the casual viewer will buy Mysterio beating up guys 3 times his size.

The difference with Guerrero and Benoit is exactly as you pointed out, they are a little tallker and considerably bulkier. Guerrero also has a amateur wrestling background which helps his credibility. Benoit I am not so sure about, but Benoit's intense personality and seemingly stiff nature is what made him more realistic.

True, the fans will buy it...the fans that have watched Rey all this time and/or all of the IWC fans. So, basically, the people who will buy it are the people who are tuning in anyway and thus, we get back to the idea of flip-flopping acceptance of what is "believable" and what isn't.

Furthermore, "what the fans accept" is kind of a weak statement I think. Because the fans in question accept "workrate" (though a lot of them don't know what that is and think spotty moves that don't make sense are what workrate is) over actual match psychology and storytelling.

What flip flopping? People draw distinctions between things they choose to suspend their disbelief on becuase on the whole those things contribute to their enjoyment of the show and things they dislike because they feel it insults their intelligence or is wholly unbelievable. That's not flip-flopping, that's drawing distinctions between two different things.

And Rey Mysterio is fantastic at telling a story and has great psychology. Rey is totally not the guy to use to justify a "the fans aren't smart enough argument."
