[WWE Corporate site]

The Royal Rumble's early estimate for buys in somewhere just north of 450,000. 2004's Rumble did just shy of 600,000, 2003's Rumble did about 500,000 buys, and 2002's Rumble did just shy of 675,000.

Still, for fiscal 2005 [Judgment Day '04 up to and including Backlash '05], the Rumble is the second-highest grossing PPV. SummerSlam did did just south of 450,000 and Survivor Series did 375,000. The branded PPVs have all done between 180,000 and 300,000. Optimists note that traditionally October's buys are amongst the lowest of the year, so maybe that was a bad time to cram another one...

Still, the improvement over SummerSlam & Survivor Series suggests that the buys for No Way Out & WrestleMania should be encouraging...but almost certainly below those of fiscal 2004.

"Still, the improvement over SummerSlam & Survivor Series suggests that the buys for No Way Out"

Well, the Royal Rumble has always outdrawn SummerSlam and Survivor Series and is almost always the second-biggest PPV of the year, barring something like InVasion or Steve Austin's comeback at Backlash '00.

"& WrestleMania should be encouraging"

I think whether Mania tops XIX probably depends on how big the Batista breakup goes over and what kind of roles for the show they come up with for Austin and Hogan. Of course, XIX had a returning Austin and Hogan as well.

And for continuity's sake,

So 270,000 + 450,000 =/= 890,000. Better luck next ... well, sometime.

I don't get the Observer but are Hogan and Austin confirmed for Mania? And if so in what capacity?

Austin is in. Hogan is all but in, although you never know with Hogan. The idea is to induct Hogan into the HOF, but he could also wrestle. No clue what Austin is going to do, but he'll be involved.

I like the so-called experts pondering why the Rumble was down. There was a PPV a couple weeks before that did quite a lot of buys! The next one is down ... what a shocker! Without New Year's Revolution, the Rumble probably would have done similar numbers to last year, maybe even better.

On paper one of the most predictable and kinda boring PPVs of the year for TNA. Still, it will be better then Night of Champions which has paint by numbers booking all over it. Kurt Angle vs.
