I thought it was odd they never named his finisher.

I am exhausted at even the thought of another Smackdown heel foreigner, and that's all ADR was for so much of his run. When it catches fire, as it has with Rusev, that angle works. But when it's just another dialect calling the audience fat losers, it's dead boring. There were some easy opportunities to freshen up the character with new alliances (Los Matadores, Cesaro, The Authority), but he was just ... there.

His Ziggler matches in the past year were good. Sometimes very good. But that didn't carry over to other performers.

I can't say I'll miss him.

Blatantly stolen from another message board:

Per Meltzer:

"Details are still sketchy regarding Thursday's firing of Al Rodriguez (Alberto Del Rio) by WWE.

The story going around is that he slapped a a Social Media manager, at this week's television, but there are a variety of different stories going around regarding what led to this.

Based on sketchy stories and what wrestlers have been talking about, at catering, somebody asked the person to clean off his plate. The person joked something along the lines of how that's Del Rio's job. Del Rio found out and confronted him. As the story goes, he didn't apologize and then smiled at him, and Del Rio slapped him."

Yikes. If true, that may lead to some bad publicity.

It almost doesn't matter if it's true. If that's the story that gets to the TMZs, and that's the story that gets to the sponsors, it's going to be trouble for WWE.

Man, what a badass way to go out. I take it all back, ADR rules. I hope he winked before the slap. Imagine if that was his angle to turn babyface -- he might've come off more Eddie Guerrero than Hispanic Mitt Romney.

In terms of the actual legacy of the esencia de la excelencia, if you play Universe Era Mode on WWE2K24 he'd probably be in the ten advertised stars, but WWE thought he was going to be one of the first three or four. They intended to push him ahead of CM Punk in 2011, Daniel Bryan in 2012 (planning on going straight from 18 seconds to Sheamus/Alberto post-Mania), and Dolph Ziggler in 2013, and he never came close to matching those guys in charisma or crowd connection. The Ziggler thing was the saddest, when their interpretation of Dolph's reaction blowing away their new top Latino babyface's was "oh, what a great opportunity to get Del Rio over as a heel."

At the same time, it's a little scary that this was a guy who from day 1 they wanted to make one of the very top acts in the company and made calls like having Edge win at Mania (at the time with the idea that ADR would win a ladder rematch), the whole mess in the fall with the two-week title reign etc, and epically turning babyface on 3MB and then turning back heel for one show. It's kind of a "with friends like these..." situation.

Given the TNA's direction in the last few months, it would completely blow my mind (in a bad way) if they debuted Del Rio in his original WWE Latin rich guy person and had him kayfabe-buy the company just to add ANOTHER authority figure in a long line of them.

Not only would it feed the favorite Vince Russo trope of MOAR HEEL AUTHORITY FIGURES, but it would also start up a new version of the Gang Wars (Del Rio's Mexicans vs. MVP's African-Americans vs. Dixie's rich white stable) for a new generation.

ARE WE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE THAT VINCE RUSSO IS GONE???

Vince Russo is like Ganon, Dr. Wily, or Sigma. You just KNOW he's still pulling the strings somewhere.

Dirt Sheets, says TNA want Alberto's phone number, I guess he is not on Twitter. Other bit of news is a Spike Executive was backstage last night during the NYC tapings and there maybe some developments on the TV front again. Maybe.

WWE sent a direct message

This is also one guy in the social media department sticking up for another (?), though they'd be crazy to do without being told to do so by someone high up on the food change.

Edit: to that end, Triple H just RT-ed those messages.

That seems awfully bold and over the top. Is there that much outrage out there? They probably should remove him from the archives. This Tweet would have seemed more appropriate when CM Punk took his ball and went home.

Desperate for a Latino star? Didn't they just let Hernadez go with no effort to re-sign him?

That's the "managed to give up on the idea every time they sign someone" part. (I'd guess they would argue Hernandez wasn't a good enough worker or promo.)

You can't read their DMs on Twitter!

I think TMZ wants to stay on WWE's good side (to get more Darren Young airport scoops) so I wouldn't expect to see Del Rio's side of the story (if that's indeed what happened) over there, no matter how juicy and racial it might end up.

The New York Post might be a good destination for Del Rio and/or his publicist to try floating it, though.

If that version of the story prevails, this is Alberto Rodriguez's face turn, and it will go over much better than Del Rio's.

I always had a soft spot for Del Rio - him and CM Punk at Survivor Series '11 might be the most momentous WWE match I've ever seen in person. He had the facials and smarm, and his matches were always pretty good, and the Mexican aristocrat who chooses his destiny and then buys it was a fresh heel character that should have been successful. Why they always left out the "buys it" part is beyond me.

Maybe because Mrs. McMahon was ramping up to buy her destiny at the same time?

Yeah, Dave had some choice quotes.

TNA was trying to get his number 90 minutes ago. Next TNA champion is not a joke. Dead serious.

    A.J. wasn't safe at all.

There was a reason she wasn't fired and it had nothing to do with Punk being her boyfriend nor how good a performer she was, although her star power did play into it.

The decision was made to fire her but Vince overruled it because he saw the big picture. It's very complicated, but in that issue, Vince was savvy way beyond those underneath him and saw what would happen long-term and made the big picture smart call. If that happened now, the situation would be the same and she wouldn't be fired for the same reason. Her being fired for that specific incident would have caused a chain of events to happen next that Vince thought would do the company more harm than good. There is no guarantee he was right in how he thought it would play out but it was far more foresight than is usually exhibited in these situations.

He's referring to the Beadle incident? Or was there something else? I can be lumped with the dummies underneath Vince because while I don't see that as a fire-able offense, I also don't see the long term negative ramifications of firing her (other than she wouldn't be on my tv anymore and that would make me sad).

I would be interested in seeing a Russo return as a contributing writer. People point to his WCW run, which I agree was in many ways a colossal failure, and to his worst WWF gimmicks, many of which I personally loathed as well.
