If The E is teaching us anything again, it's that heel authority figures are a played out trope and are ruining everything. I mean, how hard is it to book your top Fast Lane program to just be two guys that want the title, as the champion looms in the background? Paul Heyman certainly has that last part down with his promo tonight, selling everyone on both a potential Lesnar/Bryan or Lesnar/Reigns match. But the McMahon-Helmsley Regime is such a superfluous element to this whole deal and all it's doing is making sure the attention is primarily on Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, not the two guys actually set to face each other in the main event.

But overall, I wouldn't call this Raw bad. Rusev and John Cena are certainly doing their damndest to sell the idea of John Cena as Sylvester Stallone circa 2006's Rocky Balboa. Even if I dread the idea of all that work going into Rusev just to feed him to John Cena, lord help me, I actually believe there's some doubt as to the ultimate outcome. And at the end of the day, isn't that how you're supposed to sell a match?

Underrated aspect of the show: DustDust EXPLODES! The idea of Cody being so far into his persona is pretty intriguing and I'm hoping that it somehow ends in Goldust and Stardust trying to out-bizarre each other in the leadup to Wrestlemania.

I really need to start checking right before I hit 'post' ... second time there was no thread, I decided to start one, and another thread is already done by the time I finish typing my thoughts Sorry, mods, but could you delete mine? I'll go ahead and copypasta onto this one.

So I was bored and decided to watch RAW this week ... yup, it still sucks. I was really hoping that Bryan coming back might help things out, but it doesn't matter if you have the best actor in the world as long as the script sucks, and boy does it ever. In the first hour, we got a grand total of 3 matches, 2 of which ended in a DQ and the third was a goddamn Brie Bella match. Thank goodness Paige won, at least.

The curtain-jerker match got revisited as a 5-on-1 handicap which I mostly skipped, since it was pretty much the Authority beating down Bryan until Reigns woke back up and decided to win the match. Then Bryan and Reigns had a falling out at the end of the show, which ended in Reigns spearing Bryan to overwhelming boos. Rather than helping redeem Reigns in the eyes of the fans, I have a feeling all the match at Fastlane is going to do is turn Reigns solidly into a heel. Two years in a row, the Royal Rumble winner will be forced to turn heel, and two years in a row, it looks like Bryan will have to be injected into the Wrestlemania main event to save it. Last year they pulled it off so well that I don't really want to see them try and fail to replicate it at WM '31, especially since I doubt he'll win this time, but from the WM thread it looks like that's going to be the case.

Other than that, they're breaking up two of their biggest teams, Double Dust and Miz x2. We all knew the Sandow's face turn was coming, but Stardust's turn makes little sense. Granted, so has most of the booking surrounding the Dust Brothers. At least Goldust got to have one last run and feud with his little brother, if he winds up retiring from WWE after this. And since I thought he retired years ago, that's not too unlikely.

Not much else that was memorable from this week. Oh yeah, what looked like a fairly decent Sting cosplayer showed up to accept HHH's invitation at Fastlane, as the lights went out and HHH shhhat his pants. That really didn't look like Sting, but we only got a glimpse of him for a second before the lights disappeared again, so maybe my eyes deceived me. I will give WWE credit for making that segment really creepy, like Undertaker-creepy. HHH/Sting is definitely happening.

I was really pleasantly surprised by the Usos vs. Kidd/Cesaro. Not that I didn't have faith in both teams, but they really gave them a nice, long stretch of time to go out and have a very good TV match. I could use some more of that on my Monday nights.

All of those people who thought the show as bad without the Authority need to turn in their IWC card. By all those, I mean that one person. I am not sure they know what to do with Reigns and Bryan. So, they are going to ruin them both. Let me state, I agree with changing it to Bryan/Brock. Reigns/Brock will have maybe half the audience when the match actually happens.

I will never buy Cena as the underdog in anything. If nuclear war happened, I would lay even odds he would survive.

I'm going to paraphrase Michael Cole just slightly: Paige said that having spray tan spritzed on her stomach was the most embarrassing moment of her life.

Paige has only known joy in her short existence. We should all be so lucky.

Boy, that crowd was dead for Ambrose/Axel.

Remember when Cena and Orton were one-upping each other with their in-ring celebrations? I think the announcers try to one-up each other from segment to segment by saying the most absurd and illogical shit possible. To paraphrase JBL, Reigns and Bryan have two of the biggest egos in the history of WWE.

I give Axel credit for trying. He's working hard. But no one cares anymore. At this point, have him disappear for a few months and bring him back as Joe Henning.

Nice callback to Katie Vick from Bryan in the opening segment.

The production package for the stuff with Sting/HHH was amazing as always. They could've accomplished the same thing without having Stingdow in the ring though.

Does his sister still wrestle? I've always heard she was the better worker of the two. If she's still active, they should bring her into NXT, claiming her recruited her to get his career back on track.

"It's like watching a rerun!" -Booker T, talking about The Authority and their evil plans at the beginning of the show, making a play for the Shoot Comments That Aren't Supposed To Be Shoot Comments Hall of Fame

Re: Axel, I think he's got potential to be a less talented but still enjoyable comedy heel who could become a crowd favorite in the mold of Slater or Sandow. The first week or two of Bad News Barrett was a disaster, if you'll remember (Barrett himself recently all-but-confirmed he singlehandedly saved the gimmick, since he saw that it was floundering and asked for the gavel and a podium, though his plan was that it'd rise up from the stage like the Brood). Sandow was treading water pretending to be people before they got him to the Mizdow angle.

They just need to figure out what exactly it is that makes Axel so hilarious and translate that into his character. Find a way to turn NXT 2 Season Finale Genesis of McGillicutty into a gimmick.

Rusev was killing it on the mic. "DO NOT 'WHAT!' CHAMPION!" and a few other bits was the most alive he's been so far. Good sign for him if he manages to survive the next two months intact.

I feel like this is one of those times where Axel would be perfect as an enforcer (ala Arn Anderson) in a Dangerous Alliance/Four Horseman style group but, sadly, those don't seem to be as popular these days.

Sadly there's a severe lack of good talkers that could speak for him, as well.

I think I might be wrong about Reigns vs Bryan. I think this feud is only hurting both of them. Bryan's coming off as an insecure guy, and Reigns to his credit has been doing better but is still a plank of wood.

Nice spear. What else you got?

This was definitely a rerun, but the Sting video was pretty cool.

I liked the Sting segment, at least the video. The multiple Stings, while that's kind of his thing, didn't really work for me. Mostly because of the camera work. We could have done without the one in the ring.

Big Show and Kane have contributed so much to WWE over the years, but they really need to be downplayed. They're just super boring. Someone's gotta turn heel, be it Reigns, Bryan, or Ziggler.

Looking forward to Bray/Taker. Looks like they're really doing that one.

Agreed 100%. I liked the whole deal right up until I saw how fake in-the-ring-Sting's wig was, then it snapped me right out of the moment. Would've been cool to have him standing RIGHT NEXT TO the ring, maybe next to the announcers or in the front row or something.

WWE Raw ratings (Feb. 9, 2015): Viewers drop dramatically despite Sting tease, Brock Lesnar appearance

WWE used the tease of Sting appearing (he never did, with impostors showing up in his stead) and a late promotional push for World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar to help boost ratings for last night's episode of Monday Night Raw in Columbus, Ohio.

It failed, miserably.

Actually, viewers were down in a big way. The show averaged 3.66 million viewers, a huge drop from the 4.29 million it posted last week. The hourly breakdown shows a drop for each hour, as usual:

Hour one: 3.79 million
Hour two: 3.67 million
Hour three: 3.52 million

Those are incredibly low numbers, some of the worst Raw has posted in a number of years and there really isn't much of an explanation for it. All hands were on deck and we're just over one month away from WrestleMania 31 while there is no sporting competition.

Simply a one week anomaly? Or are fans simply uninterested in what WWE is currently offering?

The spat of disqualifications reminds me of when I switched to WWE from WCW in 1997. I was watching Nitro, as I always did (Raw only on commercial breaks) and had a heart to heart with myself, accepting that while all of my favorite wrestlers were in WCW, the matches on Raw were far superior.

I'm not sure what would have happened if I hadn't had an alternative. I might have quit watching wrestling altogether. Maybe some people are making that decision these days.

The combined weight of The Big Show and Kane brought that rating down.

I'm sure Better Call Saul, a better-written show with much more compelling characters, debuting to record breaking numbers may have had something to do with that third hour drop, although the third hour didn't drop as much as usual.

WWE needs to make Roman Reigns a crooked lawyer ASAP.

Bad numbers nonetheless.

Obviously a sign that fans don't like Bryan or Reigns, nor do they want HHH vs Sting. The answer is obvious. HHH vs Cena vs Brock at WrestleMania.

I like to believe all the Big Show & Kane fanatics saw them in the opener, figured that must all be for their heroes, and felt free to watch something else the rest of the night.

ITT: having guys wrestle twice in a night, much less in almost the same match twice, has historically hurt ratings. Not that it would totally explain this, but I can't imagine why they felt the need to do both Bryan/Reigns teases in the same night unless they just couldn't figure out a way to stretch it out for three hours.

The WWE's biggest problem is it's a lot easier to compute how much money they get from having a third hour than it is to compute how much money they lose from overexposure and rushed angles to fill time.

It might help if they expanded the main roster by "promoting" some of the less promising NXT acts. Their creative is so bad that their only reliable way to get anyone over is by keeping them off TV. Why not embrace that? Have too many people lying around, so that some of them have to sit out every other Raw. Maybe it'll keep everybody fresh. And instead of this awful quagmire where the same unover acts kill time with the same unover acts week after week after week, you get exponentially more possible wacky matchups.

Yes! Русев удря yet another segment. Русев мачка everything in his path right now. He's the best. "You can't even see me with your one eye! You can't!" Killed me. He's going to be a babyface at Wrestlemania. Fantasy booking contest: what's the best way to get him out of this dead-end gimmick?

If Wyatt beats Undertaker at Mania, which I hope happens (apparently that puts me decidedly in the minority?), does Wyatt gets custody of the deadman's parlor tricks? "Incompetent cult leader" might not be the best gimmick, but "southern gothic hillbilly Undertaker"...
