So I'll be honest, RAW was extremely subpar for a takehome show. I guess they figure that everyone who was going to get the Network for Summerslam was already bought in, even the shilling was more subdued this week (though anything would be an improvement over the constant shrieking of "9.99!" last week).

Let's see ...

-Lesnar came out and looked tough while Heyman cut another Heyman promo
-We had more stupid Brie/Steph crap that nobody cares about
-Cena cut another Cena promo (and kinda broke kayfabe by saying a lot of the Internet has been wanting him to turn heel)
-Cesaro jobbed, again, to a sloppy Tea Party gimmick loser who isn't fit to lace Cesaro's boots
-Reigns got a DQ win over a heel tag team which he proceeded to decimate single-handedly anyway (making RybAxel seem like even more of a joke than it already was)
-A bunch of crap with Hogan and other oldsters leading to a teased confrontation between Cena and Lesnar where neither one throws a single punch
-Orton and Sheamus had a decent match
-Two instances of really bad rhyming
-Eva Marie existed

Honestly, the only good parts of the entire show were Orton/Sheamus (a match whose finish everyone saw coming) and Ziggler/Slater, which was a countout victory for Slater. On the upside, Slater wins two RAW matches in a row! I think the crowd's really starting to come behind him as a plucky underdog, though apparently he's still a heel (judging from him refusing the Handshake of Respect).

Impact hasn't even aired yet and I'm pretty sure it's going to once again be the best wrestling show this week. Unless Smackdown! really turns up the heat, and it's clear that WWE is just phoning it in until SummerSlam at least.

Hey, did you know the FREAKIN' NETWORK COSTS $9.99???

I wouldn't recycle this hackneyed joke from last week, but the shilling was just soooo insufferable, right down to promos from Triple H, John Cena, and even Hulk Hogan all practically BEGGING people to subscribe to the Network. I've never seen anything so desperate in my life.

So how did WWE try and convince you to subscribe this week?

-Another long, boring Sheamus/Orton match. Good finish, but dear God, we've seen this match so many times already, I don't ever want to see it again.
-Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella re-enact the Claire Lynch angle with Daniel Bryan playing the role of AJ Styles! I AM NOT JOKING!
-Jack Swagger beats Cesaro clean in a "Reversal of Fortunes from 6 months ago" match! Cesaro just looked defeated out there and he was clearly phoning it in. He's going to turn into Buff Bagwell before our eyes. Mark my words.
-Heath Slater beats Dolph Ziggler after a distraction finish, because both guys in the Intercontinental title match have to come in on losing streaks!
-Roman Reigns beats Rybaxel in a handicap match. Remember when Ryback was the guy that used to come out on top in handicap matches and wasn't just handicap match fodder?

And then there's the Hulk Hogan birthday celebration main event, which looks like a waste of time on paper during the go-home show, but is STILL a step up from Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella eating up the final slot again. Hulk celebrates with Mean Gene Okerlund, Jimmy Hart, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Paul Orndorff (who stole Zeb Colter's mustache for the occasion), Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash! It featured a great video retrospective and looked like it was going to be played totally straight until BROCK LESNAR CAME OUT TO BATHE IN OLD MAN BLOOD! The best part of this had to be that the entire roster was on top of the ramp and simply stepped aside without any resistance, cementing themselves as complete dweebs and reminding us why nobody takes them seriously. Brock simply told Hulk, "Party's over, grandpa!" but John Cena made the save. Brock took his leave to give us our final SummerSlam main event hype. $9.99! $9.99! $9.99, you guys!

The show up until the birthday celebration was dreadful. For as much as they're begging people to subscribe, they sure didn't offer a whole lot of reason to, beyond the SS main event.

And again, it should be noted that I typo'd last week, so that thread title should be Raw #1107. We'll try again to fix it for next week's show.

Dean Ambrose really picked a Lumber Jack match? I can't think of too many match stipulations I dislike more.

The Brie Bella stuff is something I dislike more than Lumber Jack matches.

I'm hitting that indifferent stage. These last few shows have been tough to watch, or have on in the background ...

I'm starting to think I need another hiatus from this crap myself ... I might just cut back to Impact until it goes off the air (crossing my fingers that it doesn't) and keep an eye out for Daniel Bryan. I spent more time on other channels than on RAW this week, and for their 'flagship' show, that's really disappointing.

If Cena actually wins at SummerSlam, I think I'm just gonna swear off WWE until Bryan comes back. Their product really has become astoundingly bad lately, and they're squandering one of their best workers in Cesaro, who has been the victim of ridiculous bungling by creative. They clearly have no idea how to push this guy, and he's just as clearly getting as sick of this shit as we are.

Also, ditto on the lumberjack match being an incredibly lame stipulation for Ambrose to pick. If he's worried about Rollins cutting and running, Hell in a Cell would have been amazing. I think the only worse match type they could've chosen would be a Judy Bagwell on a Pole match ...

So, after that Cena promo, regardless of who walks out with the title on Sunday, the real winner is...Bray Wyatt. Right, WWE?

I loved how Eva Marie went from jumping around and blowing kisses after her win to selling a sore neck two minutes later.

Scott Hall was pretty good and Orndorff was pretty awkward. I've never heard theme music for Mr. Wonderful before. That was glorious.

There's been a lot of really awesome video hype for Cena vs. Lesnar. I kinda wonder how a Daniel Bryan vs. Lesnar match would've been promoted. Probably not The Biggest Fight of the Summer/

Agreed, I'd rather have a Judy Bagwell on a pole match at this point. I mean you have all kinds of great possibilities and you go with the lamest gimmick match?

I didn't think the shilling was anywhere near as bad.

SLATER WINS! SLATER WINS!

Orndorf not being able to move his arm and having to wear a 30 year old robe to the ring to cover it made me sad. He was one of my favorites in Mid South before he went to the big show.

I did enjoy Brock shoulder bumping Piper and laughing at Flair.

I already have the network, but only until this PPV, excuse me, SPECIAL EVENT is done. Not sure if they've done anything to make me want to re-up. The last two Special Events sucked after four pretty solid shows.
Lets hope they do things right and tear the house down on Sunday, or I'll keep my, SAY IT WITH ME! $9.99

Cena is really reminding me of the early WCW-era Hogan when he fought the Giant,(you remember, like how he "embraced his dark side" and wore a black bandanna on occasion). Makes me wonder if they'll actually pull the trigger and turn him once they feel comfortable with a solid replacement or two. Although, I kinda expect the him to get back over as an face (kinda half-ironically, half-not), with the smarks in short order.

I wanted to watch the last Raw before SummerSlam but I couldn't get all the way through this show.

So...Roman Reigns is terrible on the mic right? I mean I'm guessing nobody has mentioned it because there were worse things on the show, but I'm not alone in thinking he's bad am I?

I liked the Steph/Brie feud before this. There isn't even any reason to suddenly add this new twist. The PPV is six days away, just continue with the current story.

I'm starting to think that Rollins vs. Ambrose is a bigger fumble than pairing Heyman with Cesaro. Their first scheduled PPV match doesn't happen and their second match is going to be a lumberjack match? Logically why would Ambrose choose that? I guess because a lot of people hate Rollins but he doesn't have any friends either. He's spent his WWE career up to this point destroying everyone in the WWE.

I was liking the intense Cena promo, but then he started talking about how the WWE is the fans' home, blah blah blah and intense Cena was gone. It really sounded like a lame thing Bo Dalls would say. They really should do an angle where every week Cena cuts a promo as a face and every week Bo Dallas does the same promo word-for-word as a heel.

For those who didn't watch and think we're exaggerating about the shilling of the WWE Network nobody is exaggerating. They had Dean Ambrose tell fans to buy the WWE Network for $9.99 at the end of a promo where he talked about his blood feud with Seth Rollins.

Remember when some people speculated that Daniel Bryan's injury would lead to Lesnar vs. Cesaro at Summer Slam? *sigh*

No. He needs some work. I've been thinking its time to stop this push and go anther direction. If there were any time to recycle a story it was with The Shield. Looking back a few months ago, I think that a great move would have been to push Ambrose and have Roman be his silent bodyguard type character (a la Diesel to Michaels).

Ambrose gets to continue to show off his skills while Reigns is being built into a mega star in the background. Both end up winning in the long term.

It just seems that Reigns is better suited at that work in the ring than time spent working on catch phrases.

I agree, that would be a much better spot for Roman since nobody's really buying him as a title contender yet. Ambrose keeps running into ambushes by the Authority, so why not recruit his former Shield buddy Roman to help watch his back? They're both feuding with the Authority currently, there's no reason they shouldn't be working together instead of independently, especially when they keep having to deal with unfair odds.

He was pretty lousy on the mic tonight, though. There was just so much else that sucked about this RAW that I kinda forgot about it. Even Ambrose was kinda a joke this week ... so he spent the entire first hour standing in a box, waiting for Rollins' music to play for the second time? Did he have little peep holes? I know that IRL they probably used a hole in the platform to get him up to the box when it was time to bust out, but it makes no sense in kayfabe ...

Yeah, Reigns' promo tonight was pretty awful. He was just trying too hard to say stuff that would catch on, and he was all over the place tone-wise. He's trying to be a badass, then he's trying to be fun, then he's trying to tell a joke, then he gets weird.

All he really has to do is watch Khal Drogo or Khal as Conan the Barbarian and just steal everything from fellow WWE co-worker Jason Momoa. Less is more on the mic, but make that little bit you say count.

I agree with the Ambrose as HBK, Reigns as Diesel template for success. It would help both of those guys out so much to do it that way. And the idea that Ambrose and Reigns don't hang quite as much because Rollins turned on them both has never made sense to me.

Rest of the show was okay. Both the Brock and Cena stuff was on point, Ambrose/Rollins is still fun, Steph/Brie is also pretty good still. The Hogan stuff at the end was really stiff and weird, but once Brock came out it got good and Piper's still got it at least.

I think SummerSlam at least is as well built as they can make it. Hopefully it delivers at least as half as last year's did.

Somebody asked me why Roman was getting so much hate post SHIELD breakup. I relate it to him being Robert Gibson.

Robert Gibson was ON FIRE as a member of a tag team. He came in, cleared house when things weren't going his team's way.
Just as Roman Reigns did.
But when the RNR Express weren't wrestling as a tag team, he's lost. His intensity of making the save can't be carried throughout a match.
He couldn't cut a promo.

This is exactly where Roman Reigns is right now. He's horrible on the Mic. He can't work a whole match on his own.
Not saying he can't adapt and learn, but right now, he's brutal.

Plus, the climb the rope and stick your tongue out BS was stupid looking when Goldberg did it 15 years ago, it's still stupid looking.

Ambrose did a good job on Smackdown of selling the stip. The lumberjacks are supposed to be all the guys they made enemies of as the SHIELD (although that's mostly Cena, Bryan, Orton, Kane, and Undertaker, who I imagine won't be at ringside).

I guess I was the only one who thought Cena's promo did a good job of selling the match. He brought his rarely seen genuine intensity, and seems to be ready to put on his working boots for the match. I thought it was one of his best promos in recent memory.

It's not Raw I guess, but absolutely go out of your way to watch the Cena/Brock special that aired on the network afterward.

One of Heyman's best performances ever, and it did more to hype me up for Summerslam than everything they've done on TV combined (faint praise, I know).

Isn't it weird that they have this great thing they can produce and nobody will see it but the folks who have already paid to see SummerSlam?

AT LEAST buy some Fox Sports Your Restion 2am slots or something to air this thing, come on

You almost have to wonder if the people putting this together did so without anybody in the company knowing about it. "Yeah, fine, whatever, just bring it in on zero budget please."

WWE's insistence on focusing on the "entertainment" looks even more foolish when they have something like this which is so heavily reliant on the "sports." I wish that pendulum was swinging back a little faster.

What kind of Freaky Friday magic bullshit happened between Cesaro and Swagger to cause this current turn of events? Call Papa Shango to set things right already!

Less is more with Roman Reigns. Keeping that guy an enigma by having him speak less like what he was doing in The Shield. Worked for Undertaker for years.

I can't help but wonder if the original plan for Summerslam was Bryan v. Lesnar? The thought of that quite possibly being the original plan is causing my brain to vehemently reject Cena v. Lesnar. I've seen these two several times before back when Heyman ran Smackdown, and Bryan v. Brock is a much more interesting David versus Super Goliath story. The main event cannot be changed.

It's depressing to know that at Wrestlemania this year Bryan was standing tall at PPV as Champion and Cesaro was getting a huge push. Now one's out do to health issues and another is being forgotten about.

Plus CONSTANT RECAPS of things that happened earlier in the show, things the announcers could quickly explain during a match or show during the Raw Backstage pass show. In fact if all Backstage pass showed were just back to back full recaps of RAW and a voiceover of Alex Riley explaining the events during a transition, while the announcers on RAW just mentioned it...

JBL: MACKLE, I can't believed what Brock and Heyman said to Cena!
COLE: For those just tuning in make sure to check out the WWE App to catch up on the shocking event earlier this evening or wait until after Raw to view behind the scenes moments on RAW Backstage Pass only on the WWE Network...
JBL: SOOPAMAHN PAUNCH MOOGLE!
COLE: Vintage Roman! King are you still there?
KING: I have no purpose in this company anymore...

Jesus a wonderful thing just hit me. Dr Unlikely brought up the idea of using former Superstars to cut a quick commercial on his podcast and using Hershey the Wonder Dog to promote it ona commercial for RAW. I say take it a step further. Use former big names from WCW, ECW and WWE to cut promos centered around the network and use those as commercials to air on RAW, Smackdown, and on the WWE website. Using Cole, Lawler and JBL's melty smiley faces to constantly bombard us with the price and features has run it's course. Now let's say a commercial comes on and it's a 30 to 40 second slick production of say Scott Steiner tossing weights intercut with clips of him destroying people in WCW. The spot ends with him simply saying something akin to "You want to see The Big Bad Booty with the largest arms in the world, only on the WWE Network. Holla if you hear me!" Graphic for the WWE Network pops up.

Give the guys who did the beautiful Sting in WWE2k15 commercial some more stuff to do and shoots some money to former wrestling talent that the older fans fondly remember. Those older fans who have credit cards who can pay for a membership. They don't have to be that elaborate either. Give Rock a bushel of cash, a mic and a camera and he can cut a promo during a lunch break on his newest movie that can put over the Network. Then give a fannypack of cash to Justin Credible, and a camera, and mic to put over the Network. Get creative. People like getting a feeling of cool nostalgia rather than outright begging when it comes to Pro Wrestling or any entertainment in general, plus that Sting 2k15 commercial created some strong buzz for the company and the game.
