No RAW thread after an hour? Guess I'll start one!

The big news of today's show is that Daniel Bryan apparently has injured his neck and will be going in for surgery on Thursday. I admit I don't keep up with the dirt sheets and have no idea if this real or a work. DB came out and broke the news firsthand, saying he's not sure how long he'll be out but he will definitely return. Sucks that he finally made it to the big time and not two months after his big WM win, he has to go in for surgery. If he's lucky, he might be able to defend at Payback; otherwise, they may end up vacating the title and having some kind of tournament to decide who gets the belt and/or belts. I don't think it would automatically pass to Kane via forfeit, though if he makes a last-minute return that may be how they play it.

Besides that, it was pretty much Evolution vs the Shield. The Shield made up for getting laid out last week by beating the crap out of Evolution not once, not twice, but three times. The third time, they even took out the entire Heel Locker Room along with Evolution.

Short recap for now ... I'll come back later for further thoughts on the night.

I did some digging after the announcement; evidently, his neck's not that bad, and they're expecting him back for Payback, or Money in the Bank at the latest. No title forfeiture is in the plans, which is good because I don't know what the hell they'd do if they lost Bryan for an extended stretch right now. They have no viable contenders who aren't deeply tied up with other issues right now.

The final segment was a cluster, but it was a good, entertaining one. Otherwise, some weird booking. No Cesaro or Barrett tonight (although Cole gave up the game by revealing that they'd put titles on Barrett, Sheamus, and Paige just in time for their UK tour), but we got a Hacksaw segment and Cody breaking his loosing streak without much of anything coming from it. I guess if Bryan was originally supposed to do more stuff, this is probably the result.

From Rajah.com, quoting SEScoops, quoting who knows who, they're calling it a minimally invasive "procedure" and it's not the wholesale neck fusing others have had done. We shall see. But the dirt sheets are saying Payback is a possibility, and if then then Money in the Bank.

Before reading that, I was waiting for Stephanie at the ambulance to say "Daniel, are you conscious? Can you hear me? ... I really hate to do this here, but due to your upcoming surgery I'm going to have to strip you of your title, effective immediately." Then let the ambulance drive away.

Well, that's a relief. If he does come back by Payback, I'm glad it's against Kane, who I've heard is one of the safest workers in the business (ironic for someone whose character is among the most violent in the WWE). Not sure what they'll do for Payback if Bryan can't make it back in time, though. Find someone else to fight Kane, I guess. It's rare for a PPV (sorry, 'special event') to NOT have a world title defense, but it's not unheard of.

As for stripping the belt like that ... I was worried that was what Stephanie was planning to do, but I think the crowd would have totally revolted if they'd done so. They're going to have to be very careful getting the belt off of Bryan, considering the company was pretty much forced by the crowds to put it on him in the first place.

I was wondering at first why Lana, our 'Ravishing Russian' was bad-mouthing England along with the US, but I guess that's to make sure her 'hot' factor doesn't get her more cheers than boos across the pond. Big E saved Hacksaw Jim Duggan from getting crushed like a brittle old stick, though he didn't fare a whole lot better against the Bulgarian Brute. Looks like we know what Rusev's doing for Payback ...

I really, REALLY hate Total Divas, and I've never even seen the actual show itself, just the segments they stink up RAW with. I couldn't care less about reality TV, not even wrestling-related reality TV, and the fact that none of these chicks can wrestle worth a damn only makes it even worse. Especially when talent like Emma's is totally wasted in the Divas 'style'. I honestly have no idea why Vince won't just let the girls wrestle, why EVERY Divas match has to be a 'cool off' for the crowd. Even Paige, who I know can put on at least a **** match, has gotten 'dumbed down' as champion. I think she got exactly one offensive move in. They really need to decide if they're going to book Paige as a fluke champion who just gets lucky or an actual badass. Or as near of a badass as they'll let ANY Diva get.

This was a pretty terrible show. Even if they planned on using Daniel Bryan and had to change plans suddenly this should not have been the result.

The only thing from this show I really liked was Paige and Alicia Fox. Alicia is great and seems to have really good chemistry with Paige. If Alicia "quitting" is a storyline that leads to more matches with Paige then I'm all for it.

Other than that this show was pretty boring. I'm all for the Shield making their big comeback at the end of the show but beating down half the roster was a little extreme.

Cena vs.Wyatts has lost steam for me, no Barrett, no Cesaro, Sheamus squashed Rybaxel, Dolph barely gets a win over Fandango, Rusev beats up Big E and what was that terrible Divas segment with the number cards? What a mess.

I'm hoping Daniel's injury is only the slight surgery and he's back, but they certainly laid the ground for him not to come back for a long time. I don't think we really know anything until Thursday.

putting aside "omg they need Punk back for Payback, it's in Chicago do it do it do it do it" factor...WWE's really in trouble here if Bryan is gone for an extended period. John Cena is still John Cena, but still scaled down for the moment (and maybe only for the moment.) Besides him, the Shield are effectively the #2 face as an entity and they can't be breaking up any time in the near future - no time for Reigns/Ambrose when Reigns/Orton might have to semimain a PPV real soon.

Cole actually annexed Ireland to the UK, which is something he'll probably be apologizing about later.

Cody breaking his loosing streak without much of anything coming from it.

The subtle story here is Cody cheated to win and Goldust wasn't happy about it. It's a better idea than Cody just losing all the time.

I think Nattie might also be turning heel? I FFwed thru that so fast I'm not entirely sure what was supposed to happen, except I know you're supposed to wait until after the match to hold up your score and start off with "Buenos Noches" <----- joke one person will get, and that person is me.

Most of what I saw was after I had already read about it on Twitter. Twitter hype was right on Alicia Fox, who had a good match and then went crazy in the most delightful fashion. (And apparently said something on the App which made a few who watch it believe she was quitting - she is not quitting.)

What was really encouraging to me is that Paige/Alicia match seemed to get a decent amount of time. I don't begrudge anyone's excitement about Paige or Emma or whoever else coming up to the main roster and Making Women's Wrestling Good (Again?), but way too many years of watching this has taught me no one's going to look good if you're only wrestling 2 minutes matches on TV. The excuse has been that the women were wrestling only two minutes because that was all they were qualified for (and maybe more than they were qualified for), but it's seemed to me more that WWE had the women they had because two minutes matches is all they really cared for. Tonight was a different. It's only one data point, but it's a good data point.

Let's beat a dead horse! An MVP-calibre performance such as Alicia's can quickly be forgotten when it happens so early in a three hour show. The Rhodes/Sandow match probably didn't actually go on forever, but thanks to our punch drunk commentary team I felt like the most over man in that match was Yogi Berra.

Guys, Damien Sandow might shoot at any time! Too bad he tried it on the Preshow. (And that The Miz had already almost done it first.) By the way, big ups to Booker for continuing to say "Kofi Kingston" with a Jamaican accent, even if he thought Ghana was in South Africa instead of West Africa.

Also, strange to see Sandow out there dutifully taking part in the "every heel we've got here tonight" portion of the overrun, given his clear dissatisfaction with....uh....hmmmm. I don't know exactly. In fact, I think that's a big problem with a lot of these characters - I have no idea what's driving them or what their motivation is. Wouldn't most of these heels in our new "shades of grey" era at least start to ask themselves, "what's REALLY in it for me to keep getting beaten down by The Shield, anyway?"

Along those same lines, how can The Shield win in any feud where Triple H is opposite them?

Was tonight the first time since WrestleMania we saw Stephanie integrated back into her husband's storyline with her visibly sending out the sacrificial lambs at the end of the show? She may need something to do with Bryan out. Or - OR - she could stay home for a few weeks! Ah ha ha ha.

Does the Wyatt Family need that jump cut EVERY time, ALL the time? They sure love to take something creepy and overexpose the hell out of it. ("He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" shouldn't be sung every segment, for instance.) Or maybe we're just not meant to watch all of every show. God knows the whole "treat every segment as if it's the first segment the viewer is ever seeing in their lives" theme still reigns supreme.

Did I tweet about anything amusing tonight? I remember thinking "wow, if I had watched 24 instead of the second hour I wouldn't have missed much" but we'll see if that holds true or not. ...Adam Rose, nah, limo parks next to clangy pole, yeah what was up with that, OH YES BATISTA'S DYED BEARD WHAT THE HELL.

I was trying to think of something they could do to bolster Payback but didn't come up with much. Maybe write a nice big fat check to get Lesnar to do an extra appearance? Or The Rock? Jericho? Undertaker? Or is he retired now? Is there anyway to get Sting to show up and somehow slot him into the Kane feud?

It's a good thing these are "special events" now and not PPVs. A card with something like Shield/Evolution, some combination of Cesaro/Barrett/Sheamus/Swagger, Paige vs. Alicia, and maybe finally Cody vs. Goldy could be a GOOD show, even if it doesn't seem quite PPV caliber.

I caught the tail end of a six-woman tag match on Main Event in which Natalya and Ariana got into a shoving match afterward. That was who Natalya specifically went for after the match on Raw too. Not sure what started it but it looks like Nattie is turning heel on Ariana, which seems like a weird choice.

Meanwhile on Superstars, Alicia Fox and Paige also had a good match there last week. It was more of a back and forth match and I suppose losing that match is the reason Fox attacked Paige before the bell tonight.

When 3MB ran to the ring as part of the heels beat down on the Shield I was disappointed that Hornswoggle was not included.

I really don't know what match everyone was watching tonight, but I apparently wasn't watching the same Fox/Paige match the rest of you were... I was pretty unimpressed, to be honest with you. Granted, it was MUCH better than the other Divas match, with the scorecards and the bleeeeh. So remind me again, Bryan married the Bella without the fake boobs, right?

Also, nice to see CRZ doing at least abbreviated recaps of RAW again. I used to read your stuff all the time back in the day.

Bray is starting to sound like a buffoon. He needs to start doing less promos or go with smaller ideas he can back up. The PG rhetoric is staring to sound the same. I don't know where he goes after this feud. Luke Harper is starting to seem like the guy you don't want to be messing with.

There is usually a Raw before the big angle summer that just sucks and kills the show for a bit. This is one of them. Now, the Bryan injury is totally out of their hands, the rest is not. I have no idea why HHH is laughing at a team that handed him his lunch a few weeks ago. But, its HHH, burying people on the mic is what he does. Which is one of the reasons why this company has no other real main event star right now. Sandow dropping pre-show pipe bombs helps no one.

The Wyatt/Cena feud has hit a wall. Unless Cena totally dismantles them, the Wyatts need to move to either a full time feud with Shield or Bryan or it needs to be for the title. Speaking of the title, I do think they are going to wait til we know for sure how long Bryan is going to be out. As bad as it will be to see Bryan stripped of the title, I'd rather see a healthy Bryan in a few months than a patched up one in a few weeks.

As CRZ stated, how can anyone win a feud over Steph/HHH? The answer is no one can. The WWE needed a few years ago to install a face member of the board of directors to come down to end these storylines. It used to be Linda, but she went into politics. When that happened, Foley, Bret or Austin should have been installed. Instead the Authority angle keeps going with no end in sight. Vince doing it could help, but by removing the GMs, I am curious to see if they will just let the wrestlers wrestle like they did back in the 80s and early 90s with only a bit of WWE authority getting involved.

The man has spent the last two months getting his face kicked off and working like crazy to get both Bryan and the Shield over. In interviews he's playing the character he always plays - an arrogant braggart. When a heel acts like an asshole in interviews then gets beaten in the ring, they're not burying anyone, they're doing their job! How exactly do you build interest in another Evolution/Shield match if HHH comes out, as a HEEL, and talks about how scared he is of the Shield and how hard they kicked his ass?

1) Triple H's resurgence has been nothing short of incredible. He's trucking it in the ring, and the promos are wonderful.

2) I HATE HATE HATE the diving headbutt, and hopefully with this injury (that is hopefully minor) it can be laid to rest and never used again.

Yeah, the headbutt is one move I wouldn't mind seeing on the List of Forbidden Moves. Can we trade back the piledriver for that?

Kane dragging Daniel Bryan out from backstage was more effective than anything else they'd done in this angle to that point. I think it would have been more effective had Bryan not given a super serious promo about being taken out of action just before it, because it sort of undercut that, but still, I didn't expect to see him again on the show so it helped in that regard.

Brie was also well used last night. I look forward to the day she kicks Stephanie's ass. If they can make that happen.

Since we're in the WWE Network Era, they can totally get away with a PPV without a world title match, especially since it was only going to be a rematch from the previous month. Plus, Shield-Evolution can headline (is it an Elimination tag now? Is that what HHH's promo was hinting at?) which would be fair considering how it's probably their hottest angle at the moment.

No other real thoughts on RAW, other than that Michael Cole dancing to Adam Rose's gimmick ain't helping things.

Personally, I was kind of hoping that Big E would helicopter onto the USS Intrepid.
