Basically, the difference between Rock's status and Jericho's status is that Rock's contract expired in March, but a few months later, he and the company came to an agreement to keep working together, but he'd be compensated on a case-by-case basis. No such cases have occurred yet -- he was asked to do the Raw after Vengeance and the Homecoming show but couldn't.

Jericho's contract expired in August and, unlike Rock, he's now in no way affiliated with WWE, at least contractually. He's assured WWE that when the time comes that he wants to return to wrestling, the only person he'd work for is Vince, but technically he could sign with TNA or anyone else today (or perhaps another 30 days if he's on a 90 day no-compete).

I'm sorry I watched this show.

The best part, funny ehough, wasn't ON the show, it was during the WWE Unlimited website: Gregory Helms almost sounding like he was going to cry during his heel turn.

I would have hoped for a super villian-type role for Helms though. I wonder how this will all play out.

I wasn't getting tired of the Hurricane, but he could have used a bit of aggression, I guess.

One other thing that made me laugh during the Vince skit was how he was able to slip in one of his favorite quotes as an announcer, "in any event,...." TWICE.

As for THAT skit, I sense that it's goona be a shoo-in for this year's Gooker Award.

I also forgot to mention that I've liked the Edge-MAsters-JBL-Rey promo.

Edge to JBL: Nobody cares about you!

To that, I say: Punked!

I also liked that comment JBL said about Masters.

I shouldn't comment too much on THAT skit, because I switched away and ended up watching women's arm wrestling, only flipping back now and then to see if it was over.

But based on what little I saw, though, it's the same problem with every WWE comedy skit, from "XFL cheerleader locker room footage!" to "Kane bones Katie Vick in her casket!" to "Shelton and Trish do that MNF/Desperate Housewives thing!" They start with a so-so baseline of funny, then trample it into the ground by beating you over the head with every single joke, to make sure you understand that you are watching funny people do funny things on a funny show and are you sure you get the joke? I didn't see Vince remove "Mae Young's other hand" from "JR's ass," but I'm willing to bet he spent entirely too long reacting to it.

WWE can be funny, but generally in spontaneous moments during otherwise normal segments. (HHH being blinded by Tajiri's mist and then angrily telling a potted plant to do something about it.) When humor is the central point of the segment, when the segment is built entirely around making fans laugh (and not partially about pushing a wrestling match), they try too hard and the whole endeavor falls apart, like an episode of Tiny Toon Adventures.

What sucks is that wrestling fandom will now turn this into a binary issue--you either find the skit hilarious or you find it crude and offensive. I didn't like it, but it's not because I'm above that sort of thing. I just expect my "removing objects from asses" humor to be funny.

I honestly haven't found anything on WWE programming remotely humorous since the old Austin/Angle skits WAYYY back in 2001.

Therein lies the problem. It can be crude, base, tasteless and offensive. It's wrestling for criminy's sake; we expect it to be all of these things.

But if it's supposed to be comedy and it's not funny, then it didn't work. People I work with who cover wrestling shows tend to have the same complaint: Everybody takes 35 minutes to say what could have been said in 30 seconds.

The way VKM lead-in to the sketch told me everything that the sketch told me, except faster and cheaper. Mr. McMahon doesn't respect J.R. But we knew that before too.

It didn't tell us anything about the characters, and it didn't develop the story. And I even would have given it a pass if it made me laugh, even once. No dice. It should have been cut.

The worst part for me was that I covered this show at work, and as such I had to write "PG rated" questions about any product that appeared on screen. "What kind of jackhammer did Vince McMahon use to perform rectal surgery on JR?" That wouldn't have worked. Though I was up to the challenge. It just took me four times as long as any other question I wrote that night.

JBL won me over though. That's how you make a crowd laugh and develop a storyline. In a fraction of the time, without even having to build a set.

For British Eyes Only.

To me, it almost sounded as though JBL was getting cheered toward the end of the segment. He'll probably be booed on Smackdown, but it was great to see him get a semi-face reaction. JBL is awesome, as always, on the mic.

For some reason, I get the feeling that JBL/Mysterio could work as a big man/little man tag team.

I kinda like the prospect of a face JBL. Not a full-on reversion to beer swilling Bradshaw, but a JBL who directs his verbal venom at the heels. And JBL/Mysterio chasing Regal/Burchill for the tag belts (should they ever take them off LOD) has the potential to be awesome.

But if JBL goes face, who's left on Smackdown to be a top heel?

1. Randy Orton
2. Eddie Guerrero
3. Booker T
4. Kennedy
5. Xtian

There's more than enough talent to fill that void.

What kills me about the VKM skit isn't the fact that is wasn't funny (it wasn't, but that's not the point). It just that I can't believe that the main part of the show is taken up by so many non-wrestlers. OK, I can BELIEVE it, seeing who's involved, but all this is based on an ANNOUNCER! Building to a match between a (VERY) semi-regular vs ANOTHER accouncer. AND IT'S NOT EVEN THE MAIN EVENT. Austin's a lot of things, but he's was the biggest draw in wrestling in the last 10 years, possibly ever. To waste his 'in ring' return on this is a little strange.

Katie Vick might have been insulting and not funny, but it least it involved the principles in the match who could actually, you know, wrestle. Let's say Austin was wrestling Benjamin or Tomko or heck, even Val Venis and one of those 3 did the skit, at least it would add some heat to the match. This just did..... nothing. It doesn't boost house show sales (unless they are planning McMahon/Ross on the house show circuit after Taboo), it really doesn't boost ratings (because if people do like it and tune in for that, they'll be disappointed because Vince isn't doing something like this every week) and quite frankly (TM. Stephen A. Smith) this is time better used for that champion guy. You know, the guy who raps. The one person in the WWE that I've actually seen people WANT to come out to see. What's his name again?

(edited by DirtyMikeSeaver on 25.10.05 1641)

By the way, Storm's gimmick includes 1.) telling the audience to shut up, and 2.) occasionally making everyone stand for the Canadian national anthem. You know they don't know what to do with a wrestler when he's making fans stand for a national anthem. It's like waving a white flag and saying, "This guy has no personality -- we give up."

God, I loved that stuff. Austin screaming at Debra "I'M EATING THE VEGETABLES" was magic.

1 more thing: I'm going to enjoy every second of this Helms heel turn. Watched the video on WWE.com, and he got some good heel heat. Hopefully they give him a chance on TV to work his new character.

The key thing is that the whole Austin/Vince/Angle thing during the Heel Austin/Alliance period led to a bunch of good/great Austin/Angle matches, and every bit of the segments were meant to put heat directly on either one of the WRESTLERS to create anticipation for a WRESTLING MATCH.

Just watched the Helms video. He cut a pretty damn good promo. Add the fact that he most definitley has the look of a heel, and this could be a really awesome run. Unfortunatley, I fear that if he doesn't gain 100 pounds of muscle and about 6 inches of height, it might not amount to much.

Angle can't win the title. how long as i been since a true heel vs. heel title match was booked. YOu know HHH isn't going to go long without his belt. I just can't see him and Angle against each other right now. If HBK wins the belt then we can have yet another HHH vs. HBK match. is there any type of match they HAVEN"T had yet?

Vinces skit? Funny stuff taken as it was, a funny show. Biggest problem again is that for two hours there were 4 matches and way too much time between them.. At least TNA is a wrestling show and not as much soap opera.

HHH vs. big Vis. Come on be real. you don't really think HHH is going to do a mid card thing for a while do you? I was wondering what they were setting up for when Flair came down the ramp. About the only good thing of this show as that Lillian was looking good and I got to catch up on alot of reading while they were running thier mouths.

Lawler said last night that "it's not a good time to be associated with hurricanes" (paraphrased)...I hope that is at least referenced by Helms as part of the heel turn, not just the simple "Screw you fans, I`m selfish now." motivation.

I`d love to see Heel Helms vs. Shelton...actually I`d love to see Shelton nowadays, but we need to retread the same old STONECOLDSTONECOLD boredom.

My big problem with THE SKIT, was that I knew the punchline at the start of it. I had to wait 15+ minutes, when I knew it was all leading to JR's head coming out of his ass. Even if it was a funny joke (which, to reiterate, it's not), already knowing the outcome just kills it dead.
