STAMFORD, Conn., March 7, 2005 World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE: WWE) announced that it has secured agreements to launch its subscription video-on-demand service WWE 24/7 with Cox Communications, Blue Ridge Communications, RCN, Sunflower Broadband, Massillon Cable TV, and SELCO (Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations).
If you read the article (and the related press release), it looks like only the companies listed carry the network now. The companies listed are not parent companies of other cable systems. You can visit http://www.wwe.com/shows/wwe247/ to send a form letter to your cable company DEMANDING 24/7.
I don't know what the price is, but the way it seems to work is that you pay a monthly fee, much like you would for HBO or Cinemax or whatever. Instead of having their programming run on a set schedule though, everything is On-Demand. You go to your On-Demand menu (you need digital cable) and you get a sub-menu of wrestling programming (WWF/E, WCW, ECW and AWA) that you can watch anytime you like. Currently, they offer 20 hours of programming per month.
I'd be pretty interested in this if it were available in my area. I wonder if they could also find a way to offer the current week's programming for those that missed it, or gave you a discount on live PPVs. That would be a huge incentive.

I'm not so sure about the whole 24/7 thing, either. Basically, they're getting unlimited airtime to air a product that targets an increasingly smaller yet increasingly dedicated fanbase. I believe it's called milking a demographic.

I've heard the cost would be somewhere in the $6-$10 (feel free to correct that if I'm wrong) per month for 20 hrs/week of "original" programming, which includes stuff such as old Raw's, Nitro's, AWA, "before they were stars", wrestler bio's, etc. Compared to some of the crap they expect you to pay $40/month for on PPV, that's practically a steal, "milking a demographic" or not.
If Comcast ever comes on board, I'd seriously consider getting it.
Yes, it did, Emma. It's called "center-cutting." This will happen in some markets. Anyhow -- whether or not the market can run SD! in HD is dependent on whether or not they have the equipment to switch between HD (for the programming)
