Is it affecting your viewing habits? Or do you just want to be the "dissenting opinion, voice of reason, cool guy"?

Well, I could say something about flaming the person who's being the "voice of reason" but I think it'd just fly overhead...

The *point* is, and remains, that if you're going to stop watching a show *solely* because the name changed, and for no other reason, then you were wasting your time watching the show in the first place.

If you want to stop watching the show because it's not as good as it used to be, great. If you want to stop watching the show because Vince McMahon is turning into some demented, creepy near-pedophile, great.

But if you're going to stop watching the show because they've changed the NAME... then why were you watching it at all? Because it was the WWF, and no matter HOW bad it was, and how entertaining it WASN'T, you're going to WATCH THE WWF BY GAWD?

That's like boycotting KFC because they stopped calling themselves "Kentucky Fried Chicken". It is, to put it kindly, kind of silly.

Good point! I wonder if just renaming the WWF to WCW now that they own it rather than this WWE B.S. Why Can't we just rename RAW=WCW Nitro and Smackdown=WCW Thunder?

No, that would be equally "catastrophic" for most of the posters in this thread as well. I mean, if changing an "F" to an "E" is "ruining" their lives, imagine what changing TWO letters would do to them!

Seriously, though, such a suggestion (Changing WWF to WCW) is silly, as it was the WCW name that caused viewers to switch off their televisions last summer, necessitating the Alliance angle...

Why can't we rename WWE RAW to WCW Nitro, and WWE SmackDown to WCW Thunder?

Heh. If you're part of the trash Vince McMahon group which grows bigger by the day, the argument could be made that RAW is about as bad as Nitro, and SmackDown, about as bad as Thunder.

Of course, being the WCW mark that I am, I'd be likely to make the argument left and right that Nitro and Thunder really weren't all that bad... until WCW went down the tubes.

But let's talk about the likelihood of this happening. Of course, if WCW had won Survivor Series, we'd already have the WCW name... or perhaps WCW/ECW, W/ECW, or even just The Alliance. That probably would have been a smarter move in the long run, saving them the embarrassment of getting their asses kicked by the panda people.

But remember the Booker T/Bagwell match? I'm convinced that whoever booked that match was setting WCW up to fail. You can't put Bagwell in a match with anyone and expect it to be a good match. Bagwell sucks. And everyone had to have known it. Hell, WCW had Diamond Dallas Page by that point, they could have put Booker and DDP in the ring together. Booker would have gotten some great face heat, because DDP was already established as the stalker and as a heel.

Hell, they could have used the opportunity to have Booker and the rest of WCW condemn what DDP was doing to 'Taker's wife. And then DDP could even have defeated Booker T in that WCW Title match to become the new champion, and put even more heat on him up until a rematch.

That's the way to start building a company. But Vince showed from the get-go that he was unwilling to let WCW outshine the WWF in any aspect, even though they both belonged to him.

By the time Vince was done with WCW, the brand had been so completely destroyed that I don't think it could ever have become its own separate company. And it certainly wouldn't have been allowed to absorb the Federation.

So, it looks like... damn it all... we're stuck with the WWE name for the time being.

What is this, Monday Night RAW? You gonna talk for twenty minutes?

Everyone is saying how Vince gave up, and how Vince got beat by Pandas. Well, maybe Vince doesn't care anymore. Yeah, they fought it in the courts, but maybe after years of fighting that Vince realized he'd rather rename the company anyways. We have known for years Vince's intentions to focus on entertainment, and make Raw an "action adventure series," so maybe this is what he now wants. Sure, maybe the Panda people got the ball rolling, but I've been thinking more and more that maybe they really didn't beat Vince. Sure it sucks if Vince chose to give up and remname his company, but it is his company (the majority of it is, at least), and he is intent on making it an entertainment entity. There is nothing we can do to stop him outside of stop watching (which is just stupid).

So before you go saying that it's funny that Vince lost, and that he jobbed to Pandas, just realize that maybe this is what he wants.

For the people that want it called WWWF or WCW, you're missing the point. They WANT the word "entertainment" in there. that's what they have been pushing for for years- to be recognized as an entertainment company. I'm just surprised that they didn't go with WSEF- World Sports Entertainment Federation. I mean, they never even use the word wrestling on the show anymore. It's always 'Sports Entertainers' instead of 'wrestlers,' and stuff like that. At least they kept the word 'wrestling' in the name!

p.s. I kinda dig those "get the F out" shirts, actually. That's more attitude than they have shown in a couple years.

But then we would have not only had the joy of seeing SaraTaker beat up DDP, but DDP the WCW world champion.
Or even worse, beat up Booker AND DDP. Or win the title.

Some things are just better off never thought about.

Anyways back to the topic... its just a letter.

I think if there was a truely excellent product being broadcast there would probably be at least 75% less complaining about this, cuz a lot of this seems like frustrated nitpicking.

Did people complain this much when the WarZone became the RawZone?

I not going to quote everything Erad. is saying........ but that is exactly why people are pissed!

Vince is going from Wrestling to talk show!

Now if you enjoy that then don't complain when you have 30 min. Stephanie segments.

I believe this is part of the reasonNitro/Thunder went down the tubes.

It is too bad Vince booked the wCw angle to suck. If they could've forseen this happening, it would've been a great way to switch over.

I'm torn over the name change. For one, it does look and sound very stupid. But that's something I can get over. It's still the WWF, just without the F. Only complaint I have is that they either refer to themselves as 'World Wrestling Superstars', etc, or change the logo.

Now if they could somehow book (well, I might add) Vince into retirement and have Shane-O take over, then have Flair and he switch everything over to wCw...That might be cool. But then again, wCw has lost so much from the InVasion it wouldn't be worth it.

Actually the ONLY thing that bothers me about the name is that in this new era of entertainment and not insulting the fans' intelligence we get that stupid kayfabe explanation for it on WWF/WWE.com.

Pandas? What Pandas? We wanted to change the name! Yeah that's the ticket!

In the Real World(tm) (i.e. outside of wrestling), this is known as `spin'. Part of the unwritten (or probably written by now) rules of spin is that you never, EVER, admit that you did something that wasn't part of some grand plan you've had since day one (or before). That would be admitting weakness or lack of forward thinking, or something.

So, to be clear, that press release was not for the fans, it was for the investors and shareholders; i.e. people who don't know what kayfabe means.

Uh, the ratings were dropping before the name change. If you think the two are related, you're crazy. And really the new logo isn't THAT much different than the old. Don't go into marketing when you graduate, okay?

I think that all falls under the broad header of Sarcasm Papercuts. Or maybe not, and that's just what I choose to read in TPR's post.

-Jag

WWE sucks. Am I going to stop watching because of the new name? No. Do I feel that I'm stupid for complaining about the crappy new name? No. Do I think that you guys are right in saying that people who complain about the name are stupid? No. Just think about this: Take your favorite sports team... let's say... the New York Yankees. Now pretend that they changed their name to the New York Pedophiles. Would you like it? Probably not. Would you like it even more if I told you that you're stupid for ...repeatedly bitching about a cosmetic name change that you are all powerless to change and effect. And that ...Kvetching and carrying on about this won't change anything

Probably not.

On a side note, I'd like to point out that the Yankees->Pedophiles change rolls off the tongue better than the WWF->WWE change. Maybe it's just me.

Whoever it was for, the press release makes Linda McMahon and the WWF look stupid.

"Spin" is when you interpret an event (in this case, the lawsuit forcing the name change) to make yourself look good.

What the press release does is pretend like the event (the lawsuit) DIDN'T EVEN HAPPEN.

That's just plain dumb, and if I was an investor/shareholder, my reaction would be "Who the hell do you think you're fooling?"

Honestly? I would lodge my complaint ONCE and then quit following the team altogether (and, if I completely LOVE baseball, find another team to follow) which would also include participating in discussions about the name change.

What the owners choose to do from there is their own business.

I'm sorry that you can't see my point in all of this.
