I don't get the Nickelback hate at all.
Is it because they write catchy songs and have mainstream success therefore making them sellouts?
I'm not seeing what makes them soooo much worse than any other rock band out there.

It's because their songs are not fun to listen to.

It's because they're on super constant heavy rotation here in Canada...especially here in their home province of Alberta. Every hour or two there's one of their songs - it gets old, quick.

Chad Kroeger sounds like he's constipated in every song he sings.

We're at the point where a local radio station (CJAY 92.1) has a "No Nickelback guarantee", and people make jokes that Tiger Woods admitting he's a friend of the band is a worse sin than his marital infidelities.

But I digress.

It does seem that they've been on the radio constantly for five years or so. I'd still blame the radio programming execs rather than the band itself.

How does Chad Kroeger sing like that?
Try doing an imitation of him, then imagine singing like that on tour for two hours every night.

There are plenty of gruff singers who make a living singing gruffly. The thing that bothers me the most about Nickelback is the production. The sound is so heavily produced that the production is really the first thing I hear before I get to the cheap hooks, overly-simplistic song structure, and damned-near inane lyrics.

I equate Nickelback to fast food - it's so heavily processed that, while it *might* taste good, it's probably not good for you. And I never will forgive them for "How You Remind Me" - for me, a song that represents EVERYTHING wrong with popular music.

Which came first, the over-produced, crap-tacular top 40 grunge/punk bands, or the radio/music execs who shove them down our throats? Regardless, I have to ignore or ridicule the band in order to teach those radio/music execs a lesson.

But hey, if Nickelback is your cup o' noodle, then by all means...

As a guy that tends to overlook the lack of artistic merit of a song if it's connected to something I enjoy (i.e. pretty much any band can count me as a fan of at least one of their songs if it played during a wrestling hype video) I'm just curious as to what makes you say what I quoted.

I'll always be more a fan of 60s, 70s R&B/Soul/Disco with your Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson songs thrown in for something in the last two decades, so I'd like to hear your take on popular music as it pertains to your feelings about this song.

Cena can't be beat because he's some unholy genetic recombinate of superstars past. I mean, you might as well call him John "Realest of the Real, Sargent Rock - Cold - A - Mania" Cena.

I hate Nickelback because while they are on the radio and selling out arenas, artists like Butch Walker are never heard on radio, and are playing bars with 200 rabid fans.

Well, hell, even I softened to Creed's "My Sacrifice" because the WWE's video for it was awesome, so I get that.

But as far as "How You Remind Me" goes...

I think it's such a PERFECT example of everything I described earlier. It does everything to appeal to the lowest common denominator, musically speaking. I mean - yeah, it's a catchy tune and it rocks, but if you actually sit down and listen to it, there really isn't much there beyond a catchy hook, a one and a half unique verses, a buttload of repetition, and an overly-produced grunge sound.

This might be beyond the scope of this already hijacked thread. All of my friends' ears have bled at least once after hearing my rant on this (and I've ruined many a dinner party with this rant as well)... so I'll keep it brief.

I know music is supposed to be viewed as subjective and that no one is supposed to defend their musical choices, but I'm not in that camp. People SHOULD be forced to think about their musical tastes and defend them. Same with film, and television, and literature. Or just any artistic medium. So what's there to like about "How You Remind Me" OTHER THAN it might make people feel good, it's got a catchy hook, and it pretends to rock? I mean - if that's all music is supposed to do, then it's really nothing more than audio masturbation. (My fast food analogy was probably better, but whatever...)

As to this song specifically, it represents the precise moment when I realized that I could no longer sacrifice my ears to music like this (see also: Sum 41, Blink 182, Avril Lavigne, etc). That doesn't mean they don't have their "good" moments or that I don't like other crappy music.

Leroy, take this in the spirit it's offered.

Fuck you.

I like what I like, and I do NOT, in fact, have to defend it to a whimpering, snobby little cunt like you.

Excuse me, was anyone even talking to you? No, probably not, because they don't like to talk people who interject in rational discussions by screaming obscenities and generally acting like idiots.

That was the most self defeating post I've seen on this board, and that includes the entire CajunMan oeuvre. I'm not sure if I'm technically allowed to do it, but I'm just going to stop you from posting now to stop you from embarrassing yourself any further.

For the record, I prefer to be called Mr. Whimpering Snobby Little Cunt.

After all, a man's manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait.

Oh, and I hope I made his ears bleed.

Eh, if I was online when he posted that, I would've done the same thing.

Also, it's probably a bit late, but we have an entire forum where you can debate Nickelback's merits to your heart's content. This ain't it. Can we get back to mocking obsessed Mickie James fans?

The Union Underground RAW theme was way more fun than either the current Nickelback one or the Papa Roach one before it, and i was pretty surprised they used it for so long considering the lyrics contain the following words:
-guns
-drugs
-sex
-fucking
The first 2 are within about 4 seconds of the song starting.

Trying to justify musical taste is usually a big frustrating waste of time, especially as people have already agreed that much of someone's fondness for a song is based on the context they hear it.

It's a shame that WWE can never bring Mickie James back now cos it would look like they negotiate with terrorists.

Well if this Big Show push doesn't work out, they can always expand WWE further and start a WWE Game Show with Big Show as host. He's already got the look.
