When watching SmackDown tonight & seeing the clips of Eddie winning the title, it occurred to me that Eddie is the first WWE Champion in a long time that uses a top-rope maneuver as his primary finisher.
The most recent one I could think of who also did so is Randy Savage...

So basically, can anyone come up with a more recent champion who used a top-rope finisher, & it would seem that every up & comer would do well to use a ground-based finisher :-)

Yoko used the Banzai drop off the second rope, so his wasn't ground based.

Well, his feet were on the second rope, but his ass was about touching the ground... (terrible I know)

Besides, I clearly wrote "top-rope maneuver", so I can't accept your answer :-)

All I can think of is Taker walking along the top rope before dropping down on his opponent and tearing dude's arm from its socket. It really wasn'y his primary finisher, though.

So sayeth Randy Stilton.

Didn't Ricky Steamboat finish off many opponents with a top rope crossbody? I know he won some belts and all.

Although not his primary finishing manouvre HBK used the Flying Elbow to get the victory sometimes

Eddie does have the Lasso from El Paso in his repetoire and all. Besides, in the WWE main event scene, all you need to master is the Beltshot.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but WTF is the Lasso from El Paso?
I've probably seen it in one of the Smackdown games, but its not registering

Booker used to finish his opponents with the Houston Hangover, right? He's a five-time you know what.
And does Jericho's Lionsault count? Its not exactly top rope, but its a flying move I guess.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Booker had switched to the Book-End when he began winning his 5 Heavyweight titles. The Harlem Hangover was used primarily in his Tag Title & TV Title days if I'm recalling correctly.

As far as Jericho, I think he actually proves that a wrestler would be better served using a ground based finisher if he wants to be a World Champion. When he won the undisputed title, it was with a Rock Bottom to take the WCW belt & a belt shot for the WWE & undisputed belt.
Plus that was around the time when the Lionsault became a near-fall & he started to used the Breakdown for a pinfall win.

So basically, I still can't think of anyone since Savage who, like Guerrero, uses a top-rope move as a Heavyweight champion's primary finisher...

Brock Leanar, with the SBSSP (Spectacularly-Botched Shooting Star Press). Mike Awesome used the frog splash in ECW.

I don't think ECW would/should qualify as a heavyweight title. I mean any "heavyweight" title that was held by Justin Credible can't be all that, well credible... :-)

BTW Ted, I'm almost positive that Steamboat didn't hold the WWF heavyweight title, & was under the impression that he never held the WCW/NWA one either. (although being a Northeast kid, I don't know for sure)

Go buy the Ric Flair DVD set right now, and watch the matches where he and Steamboat trade the NWA World title. You'll be a better person for so doing.

A work buddy of mine is actually lending it to me any day (or so he claims), & those are the matches I'm most looking forward to seeing. The thing is, I was always under the impression that Flair basically held the title the whole time & Steamboat played the ultimate babyface chaser forever...
I guess I'm mistaken but don't say too much more, I don't want it to be spoiled!! ;-)

Steamboat's NWA win(s) notwithstanding, weren't his reigns before Savages?

I think it'd be col is Eddie busted out the Gory Special 2000 during his match with Angle at Mania.
Slips out of the Angle Slam -> gory special -> frog splash -> 1...2...3 -> we mark out even more than at no way out

In '84 Steamboat chased Flair but didn't succeed. However, in '89 he succeeded, and that's one of the reasons why the Flair/Steamboat matches were legendary is that Flair was the one chasing. And, Savage held the WWF title from March '88 thru April 2nd '89, Steamboat's reign was February 20th 1989 thru May 7th 1989. And, the Best of 3 falls match was on the same day as Savage dropping the World Title to Hogan at Mania.
Also, if WCW titles are being counted, Savage defeated Flair for the belt on Clash of the Champions in early '96 with the flying elbow after a mysterious bell ringing while he was perched on the ropes.
And, despite the fact that Flair going to the top rope is 99% an indication of trouble for Flair, (officially recognized) Title reign #2 was won on a flying bodyblock from the top.
And of course, the greatest NWA World Title reign of all time began with a top rope sunset flip by 'Hands of Stone' Ron Garvin on Flair in September of '87.

What about Hogans BIG Legdrop?
Doesnīt that qualify as aerial finisher?
Look at it in slow motion! Look at that hang time! Itīs a bird! Itīs a plane! No, itīs the Hulk and he is running wild! STILL!
And Iīm sure he would have done it from the top turnbuckle! And trough 4 tables! In flames! And into a bed of nails! But Vince said: Thatīs to risky, brotha!

Pro Wrestling Illustrated and their family of magazines after much debate finally gave them World title status... Of course right after doing that ECW went bankrupt and lost all the talent they had for except well Justin Credible.

As for the question/statement about Eddie being one of the only WWE World Champions to use a top rope move as a finisher, that seems accurate. I didn't really think about that until now... I think Savage very well was the last one who had his legit finisher coming off the top. As some said both HBK and Undertaker have main moves that come from the top but not their famous finishers.

I caught a bit of Smackdown this week after months of not watching. Kenzo looks unkempt and dare I say retarded. Forget his skills... who's going to buy this guy as any kind of threat with his crazy wild hair (which makes him look similar to Killer Khan)...
