According to Dave (liveaudiowrestling.com) WWE has decided on the location for WM 22. And the lucky city is...

CHICAGO!

I am stoked for this. We have always been good for Vince, the local media more than willing to play along with him, and the fanbase comes out. I was there for Austin/Hart at WM13 and hope to get another match just as memorable this time around. I don't watch much WWE anymore, but still, Wrestlemania is Wrestlemania, and it's still the Super Bowl Sunday for wrestling fans.

As much as I'm a mark for the stadium shows, it's a good WWE city and a traditionally good crowd.

Plus I think they've hit on a formula of a) they know they can sell 20,000 seats in Chicago for a WrestleMania like THAT and b) they can charge higher ticket prices for an arena WrestleMania and have people willing to shell out the money. WMXX did a monster gate, and I'll assume WM21's prices will allow it to do the same as well.

It's the safe move for them, but it's also turned into smart business.

I actually planned a year ago to attend the next years' WrestleMania. Chicago seems like a cool place to go, and I'm glad it's not in Canada (I'd love to visit Canada, but I think you need a passport to fly there and I don't have one, and that's just more money).

I still wish WWE would go back to the stadiums for 'Mania, though. It just brings a great atmosphere to everything. Ah well. Chicago is usually a hot crowd, so it should be fine.

I think this is cool and everything, but why Allstate Arena? I know the last 2 Chicago WMs were in Rosemont, but what's wrong with the United Center? When was the last time WWE even played the United Center?

Oh let this be true. As a Chicago resident, I've wanted this day to come since I couldn't attend WrestleMania 13.

By hook or crook, I'll make it to WrestleMania next year. Even if I have to sit in the nosebleed section.

Good question. Personally, I like the look of the United Center better. Plus, I may be wrong, but isn't it bigger (it looks bigger)?

The only time I can remember WWE doing a card at that arena was SummerSlam 94, although I'm sure they've been there since.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it's because of the Bulls. Depending on their lease, they may be able to restrict other events from being there -- or at least have first dibs on the arena. Since the home games for the 2005-06 NBA season have not yet been set, the United Center doesn't know if the Bulls will be having a home game on the day of WrestleMania and may thus be unable to rent the site out this far in advance. Most places will work around things like this (perhaps an extra fee), but I guess if there was an option the WWE figured it wasn't worth the hassle.

I believe Summerslam '94 was the only WWF/WWE appearance in the United Center. WCW, however, was there quite a bit in the NWO heyday. Who knows why they don't choose to go back there now. Have they said for sure yet that it is going to be at the Allstate? Maybe it will be somewhere else.

I'm with spf on this- my interest in WWE has dwindled somewhat, but I am still glad to hear that 'Mania is coming back. I'll do my best to get tickets- if they aren't outrageously expensive. In '97 I got tickets to WM 13 like two weeks after they went on sale, and they were fairly cheap. They were in a pretty sad state last time Wrestlemania was here, but of course that *was* the event that hosted the match that started them back off to a big boom period. At least you know that nowadays WWE can still sellout big events rather quickly.

Now if we can just get a better card from top to bottom this time around!

Well, tickets for this year's Wrestlemania were $750, $200, $100, $75, $50, and $40. So two of the chepest seats available will still probably run you about 80 bucks (closer to 100, once you're done with all the service charges and such).

And on top of that, you have to deal with NOT BEING ABLE TO GET THROUGH AT ALL during the internet presale, or the official day of sales.

Since the home games for the 2005-06 NBA season have not yet been set, the United Center doesn't know if the Bulls will be having a home game on the day of WrestleMania

Every building has conflicts; they'd work around with the NBA if they wanted to be in the United Center.

I don't have Dave M supplied proof on this, but this is my working assumption: when possible, WWE will avoid buildings which were WCW exclusive and always choose those who were loyal to them during the war. United Center signed a deal to host WCW only (though not at first), so WWE stuck with Allstate then and is sticking with them now.

United is sooooo much neater. And Allstate's parking sucks. You deal with it, though.

Edit: BOOO, I just realized I'd have an inside shot at getting WM tickets if they did have it at the United Center (which they're not, the press release leaking the news being from the Allstate Arena people, after all.) That's disappionting. I think I'll blame Eric Bischoff for that.

I'm also debating hitting Wrestlemania this year...if for any reason, I've never been to Chicago before. Wonder if we can get a "W get-together" happening there.

Oh, and travelling to and from Canada from the USA doesn't require a passport, if my memory serves me correctly. I think a birth certificate works just as well.

A passport isn't required for Canada from the USA, but is HIGHLY RECOMENDED. Especially since 2001 - you will be wanting one to get your return to the USA to go smoothly. (No link, but I do the trip fairly regularly.)

I remember an old Raw magazine article detailing the wrestler's favorite hotels, restaurants, and arenas. The biggest section of the article was on Allstate, the overall winner for favorite arena to perform in. No wonder they stick with it.

I wasn't sure about the whole passport thing to Canada but, as Heat Miser said, since 9/11, I know they're pretty strict as far as rules go at the airport (not that I'm complaining).

Really, I just decided to go because it doesn't look like WrestleMania will be held in North Carolina anytime soon, and I feel I should attend a WrestleMania once in my lifetime (I am THAT big of a wrestling nerd).

I guess this puts to bed the absurd rumours of them doing it in an open arena in Calgary in March.

I like the choice. I was gonna take my hard-earned cash and spring for a trip to Mania in 2003, but that was Seattle which is way too far. I was broke in 2004 so I couldn't take in XX, which I woulda loved. LA is definitely way too far, as far over as Seattle and even lower, according to my outdated globe which still contains the USSR and if I'm not mistaken, the Ottoman Empire. So maybe I can budget in Chi-Town. Always wanted to see that city.

Hopes to scratch "attend Wretlemania not in hometown", as well as "Christina Milian" off to-do list.

I've been going to Toronto once a year since 2000, and the odd thing is that they never asked for either a passport or birth certificate until 2003. I didn't have anything to give 'em (why would I, since I hadn't needed anything before), and they stopped me for about half an hour. You'd think the US border officials would have been more cheesed, but it was the CANADIANS who tossed my car the most thoroughly--on the way back to the States I only had to let a guy look in my trunk for about a minute. In the end it amounted to a slap on the wrist, but it was a huge pain in the ass.

Needless to say I carry my birth certificate with me across the border from now on. It works just as well as a passport in my experience.

Possibly, but it may be that you can only deal with it at a certain time. For instance, the Big East football conference is constantly having to delay announcing their football schedule (or was, actually) because Temple was a tenant of Veterans Stadium, behind the Phillies. They HAD to wait until the Phillies schedule was announced before they could set their home games. And, odd as it may seem, when DC United signed a lease with RFK Stadium they had it written in that THEY would be the primary tenants, even if baseball came. So the Nationals have to work around the DC United schedule, not vice versa.

WWE always announces WrestleMania extremely early (a year-plus ahead of time) so depending on the type of agreement the Bulls have with the United Center -- they may have it written in that no other events can be scheduled until each NBA schedule is announced -- it very well may not be possible for the WWE to work around things until later in the year ... and that would be too late for their purposes.

I don't know if I'd agree with your hypothetical, though. If it's a nicer arena and holds more people then the WWE would logically (1) be able to charge more and (2) sell more. I'm not sure they'd turn down extra cash like that out of spite.

Every year, the Bulls (and I guess the hockey team?) leave the United Center in November for a long road trip because the circus comes to town; the team hates this, but it's not their call. The Bulls schedule is always drawn up with the knowledge they'll have to be on the road for a while during the month, the circus driving a portion of the NBA sched.

My thinking is if they the NBA can work around a multi-week circus sched (hitting many other venus besides United too), they'd be willing to work with the UC and make sure a Saturday and Sunday are free in March given plenty of warning. I presume many of the other buildings with PPVs for the next year have the same sort sched work arounds.

It's gotta be more of a problem with Phillies/Temple (and United/Nationals) because you can't just move a baseball game up or back a day without affecting a lot of other things because of the much fewer off days.

re: spite - are you familiar with the history of Vince McMahon? I think the dude believes in spite over money in the right situations.

It probably could be better phrased "Vince is sticking with Allstate because of the loyalty the building had to him when he wasn't the only game in town."
