From the digital bits (thedigitalbits.com):

We've got an update for you this evening on Paramount's upcoming Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Collector's Edition. As we mentioned earlier today in the daily column, the unannounced title was tentatively slated for release in June, but has since been delayed. Our sources now indicate that the title will likely arrive in August instead. But here's the good news - you can expect it to be a Director's Edition, similar to the recent 2-disc Star Trek: The Motion Picture re-release.

That's really quite annoying. I went looking for Trek DVDs a couple weeks ago, but all they had left were a couple dozen copies of The Motion Picture, one copy of The Final Frontier, and one copy of The Undiscovered Country. Are they going to release them all in "special" editions, thus making it impossible to find them in non-special form?

You might be able to find the "non-special" versions from specialty places (like DVD planet or similar stores), but probably not in stores like Best Buy.

You know, it would be cool if there was a Ricardo Montolban commentary track on ST II.

- IN unrelated DVD news, I found a copy of the new Coen Bros. movie (the man who wasnt there) for 16.99 at Circuit City today. I think I've mentioned it before here, but they have insane prices on new titles of late.

eh...not surprised, my store paid 13.44 each [we got 8]

now Curse of the Jade Scorp. on the other hand, had a dealer price of $30+

if it's a hot 1 disc movie like training day, it'll be under $20

if it's an indy or artsy or "high brow" or 2+ disc movie, it'll be $30+

hell, best buys in my area are still selling the Clerks DVD for about $34 when amazon has it for like $25

From the Digital Bits (digitalbits.com):

The official Star Trek website just announced Paramount's DVD release of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Edition for 8/6 (SRP $29.99). The 2-disc set will include a new 116-minute cut of the film (expanded to add the footage shown previously only on ABC TV broadcasts) in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Extras will include audio commentary by director Nicholas Meyer, text commentary by Trek Encyclopedia co-author Michael Okuda, theatrical trailers, storyboards, The Captain's Log featurette (includes new interviews with Meyer, stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Ricardo Montalban and writer/executive producer Harve Bennett), the Designing Khan featurette (includes interviews with Meyer, Bennett, graphic designer Lee Cole, costume designer Robert Fletcher, production designer Joe Jennings and more), The Visual Effects of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan featurette, original interviews from 1982 with the cast and crew (including the late DeForest Kelley) and The Star Trek Universe - A Novel Approach by Authors Julia Ecklar and Greg Cox featurette (interviews with Trek novelists). Here's the final cover art for you to check out.

ST:TMP has such hideously slow bits, I cannot IMAGINE sitting through a director's cut.
