I told my boss (a female) that I had a doctor's appointment one afternoon and would have to leave a bit early. In front of about 3 coworkers and a few customers, she asked if I had to get seen for an STD.

Would you consider this inappropriate?

Holy shit, yes.

If you've got the kind of relationship with your boss and/or co-workers where comments like that aren't cause for an HR incident, that's one thing. But in front of customers? Hell no.

If she felt comfortable enough saying that to you in front of a customer, you should have responded with "why, did you give me one?"

At face value it seems inappropriate, and if you have an issue it most likely was, but depending on the customers I could see that sort of thing happening at my office.

No doubt inappropriate. What a dumbass thing to say in front of customers. Funny how the old double standard will probably apply here: if the genders were reversed, there would be an immediate firing.

BRILLIANT.

Seriously though, she was way out of line. Co-wroekrs is one thing. But customers? That'd be uncalled for.

I have to ask...Did she say it sarcastically, or did she sound like she was serious?

She said it sorta half asses sarcasticly. Either way, I reported it to our company's HR department. We're a nation wide company so I have to wait for a rep to do an investigation. I spoke to one today and she was appalled by the comment.

And, she said, "If you feel you are suffering any type of retaliation for filing, call me immediately".

This just sucks.

That's pretty awful. And believe it or not, that sounds like a fairly straight forward case of sexual harassment.
