Would you be more excited about WrestleMania (and in particular, the main event) if Batista had a reputation as a better worker?:

I keep noticing the lack of insane fanboy excitement here that was here last year. Of course, last year we had Chris Benoit and Shawn Michaels (both workers with reputations of being excellent in big matches) and Triple H (a guy who'd had a bunch of good matches with the aforementioned two) in the main event. There was no worrying about who'd be carrying the match because all three were capable of doing so. This year there are a bunch of question marks.

How long will the match go? Is Batista capable of wrestling longer than ten minutes? How much carrying can Triple H do? He hasn't exactly been spectacular this year in matches not involving Benoit or Michaels. Heck, his matches with Orton at Unforgiven and the Rumble were fairly bland and that was with a pretty good amount of heat on 'em beforehand. There's also the questions of where to go after WrestleMania? If Triple H wins, there's really no fresh matches left for him. If Batista wins, there's a bunch of fresh matches...but outside of Benoit, Michaels and maybe Edge or Jericho, there might be carrying issues. Can Batista carry a match?

EDIT: Note that I'm comparing this year's almost utter lack of mark-out response this year for Mania (Batista/HHH, Cena/JBL, Angle/HBK & Orton/Taker) compared to last year's (Benoit in the main event, Eddie/Angle & the return of the Deadman).

Batista can carry the type of match he should have, and that's the Goldberg-esque ten minute max beatdown. So far, this is what we have seen with him more often than not, and if they keep it up I don't see a problem.

As for WrestleMania, clearly you weren't paying attention last night. HHH is the greatest man to ever walk the earth, so of course he will carry Batista to the ultimate WM match of all time.

Would you be more excited about your beer if it were ice cold instead of piss warm?

Would you be more excited about spending a day outdoors if there weren't a tornado outside?

Would you be more excited about standing in a meadow if you weren't surrounded by heaps of cow patties and flying insects?

Would you be more excited by the buffet if there were a guy wearing a tall white hat carving prime rib at the end of it?

I also believe you're overestimating the amount of "insane fanboy excitement" that was here last year, but maybe I've just blocked it out of my blissfully ignorant, possibly fevered mind.

I'd be more excited about Wrestlemania (or any PPV, for that matter) if they'd make them less expensive to attend live or order on PPV.

I think Batista should be where he is. He's not a great worker by ANY means, but he is insanely over right now, and the fans are salivating for Batista to kick Hunter's ass.

I saw their first match at the RAW tapings a few weeks ago. It was far from great, but it wasn't bad.

Difference is, at WrestleMania, the booking will be really intricate and they'll get to use all the smoke and mirrors they need (blood, weapons, etc.). Plus, Hunter, when motivated, is a good worker and he will be no more motivated than at WrestleMania.

Will this be a ***** classic like last year's WrestleMania main-event? I highly doubt it. But I'm not expecting a horrible match either. I'm sure with careful booking and a really motivated Hunter, this could hit *** or so.

The real problem is Hunter likes to go at least 20 minutes, and WrestleMania will certainly be no different. Batista needs to show limited amounts of weakness right now, and I don't think that'll happen.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I will say this: I am excited about seeing Triple H v. Batista, and if you told me a year ago that that match would be the 'Mania main-event I'd be uber-pissed. So yay for good hype-jobs and all that.

The Gauntlet match!

No seriously, they have to either make it no DQ or less then 15 mins. Batista didnt get over for his ring work but an ok match and a win is better then a ok match and a loss.

Was there a lot of excitment last year? I had actually forgotten until just now that last year's match WAS a Triple Threat, and not just Benoit over Triple H by submission. Usually aren't we all against triple threat matches as main events? I would think we'd all have been complaining about the fact that Benoit/Triple H had to endure having a third wheel thrown in.

What I do remember about last year was the fact that I was VERY pleasently surprised about the match. If I recall, they kept making it look like Triple H was going to win in one of the ways that he always does, and then fooling us by having a kickout or third man interference. It was a great match that kept me going, "OH NO! TRIPLE H HAS WON AGA-NOHEHASN'T! IT'S NOT OVER! WHEEEEEE!"

The fact that you just reminded me of that match is the first thing that actually has me excited to see Wrestlemania this year.

Me, I recall a lot of gloom about Michaels also being in the match; some folks (myself included) expected Trips would be handing the belt over to his buddy for a while and Benoit would just get a pat on the head and an A for effort.

I'd be more enthused about WM if I believed Batista could hold it together over an extended match, or Triple H could be trusted to carry him. And the prospect of JBL/Cena does little to warm the cockles of the heart, either. You can guarantee a hot crowd, but not much else.

I wasn't excited about Mania last year, as I presumed the outcome would be either Trip battling all odds and coming out victorious, or Trip losing the belt without being pinned. I was wrong on both counts.
An interesting sub-plot to the Trip/Batista match is the lack of Pat Patterson to lay out the main event match. Batista is a flawed power wrestler. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, however, over the course of a 18-22 minute match, those flaws become greatly exposed. The ability to mask those flaws could be a huge determinant as to whether Batista moves forward as a strong champion or as a weak placeholder to move Trip along in his quest to top Flair's 16 World Title reigns by Mania XXIII.

If only there were a way to go back and read what people were posting last year.

Man, I was sooooo excited about WrestleMania XX, and the main event (plus the return of the Dead Man, so sue me and take away my Smark Membership Card) is what bought the pay-per-view for me. Even though I absolutely, 100% expected Benoit to lose the match.

But as the match progressed, I became more and more excited, to the point where, when Benoit had the Crossface locked in on Triple H, I was down on the floor screaming "TAP YOU SON OF A BITCH!" And then he did, and the party started at my house, you bet your ass.

This year? I'm pretty excited for WrestleMania, I guess. But I probably can't afford to order it this year. I'll almost certainly get the DVD, though, even if WM bombs (which it very rarely does), because of all those hilarious commercials!

Hee! Huge Sorkin fan, so I looooooved that commercial.

Ok- Im ALWAYS excited about Mania, but as I recall.
98% (yes I did just pull that number out of my ass) of you were all whining and complaining that the main event was gonna be a triple threat. So I dont think there was as much "fan boy excitement" as there was "smarks complaining because there wasnt gonna be a one-on-one classic"

Im not ragging on you Freeway, just saying...

I think Batista can learn to put on a longer match, WWE does a lot of dumb things but surely they're not gonna let the main event at Mania be 5 minutes long... dave is a smart guy (except when he says hunter is the greatest of all time), and Im sure he'll be able to pull it off. I've read his interview at IGN and he at least sounds smart, and also realizes the mistakes Goldberg made as a worker... so Im not worried.

I am man enough to admit that I was one of those smarks. I like to think I've learned my lesson... probably not, though.

As for the main-event, I certainly don't think it should be 5 minutes long. I just think it'll be hard to have Batista have a 20 minute match that doesn't expose his weaknesses and possibly even deflate the crowd's enthusiasm for him. I'm not saying it's impossible for him to have a good match, and I'm expecting it to at the very least be passable. It's just that WWE is gonna' have to put on their thinking-caps to make sure everything that needs to happen in this match happens.

And, yes, I just used the term 'thinking-caps'. I am SO ready to start teaching 3rd grade.

I think Batista can go longer than a lot of people think, especially if they lay the match out right. As the heel, HHH should be in control for most of the match, and as the smaller man, HHH's job is going to be to keep Batista grounded. Working a lot of leg submissions and so forth can keep the action moving without requiring Batista to extend himself too much. And for those of you that think twenty minutes of Batista lying down sounds like a boring match, that's really going to come down to execution. We'll have to wait and see there.
