| #1 Posted on 2.3.12 2318.49 | Instant Rating: 1.84 | My brother got me The Kommandant's Kollection: The Complete Hogan's Heroes on DVD for Xmas this year. This has always been one of my favorites, but I was always puzzled how the great Ivan Dixon (see the film Nothing But A Man with Abbey Lincoln) was just replaced at the beginning of season 6 with no explanation (I know he quit, but I mean within the storyline) by the terminally bland Baker (Kenneth Washington). This led me to think of similar replacements that were equally awful. I wanted to do a poll, but I don't know if this board has that feature. Opinions? Any others? Which one bothered you the most?
1) On Hogan's Heroes: Kinch replaced by Baker
2) On the Dukes: Bo & Luke replaced by Coy & Vance
3) On Bewitched: Dick York replaced by Dick Sargent
4) On MASH: Trapper John replaced by BJ Honeycutt
5) On MASH: Frank Burns replaced by Charles Emerson Winchester III
6) On MASH: Henry Blake replaced by Sherman T. Potter
7) On Kotter: Vinny Barbarino replaced by Beau DeLabarre
8) On the X-Files: Scully & Mulder replaced by Reyes & Doggett
9) On Happy Days: Arnold replaced by Al
10) On the Office: Michael Scott replaced by no one in particular

Yeah, you need to hush.
MASH is an unwatchable show until Blake and Trapper leave. I could maybe, MAYBE, concede Burns for Charles, simply because Charles wasn't as automatically hateable as Frank, seeing as how Charles was a competent surgeon and an OK guy once he lowered his arrogant prickshields. But the suggestion that Trapper was a better character than BJ, or Blake was a better character than Potter? Seriously?
Then again, the fact that you like Hogan's Heroes explains a lot.
I'm Charlie Owens, good night, and good luck.

* I like Bill Simmons' take on Cheers....with Diane, Cheers was a great show, but without her, it turned into 'merely' a great sitcom.
Don't get me wrong, even if you only look at Cheers' final six seasons, it's still a great show --- the gap between Diane and Rebecca is nicely filled by Frasier and Lilith becoming major characters. But the Sam & Diane chemistry was just so strong that when Shelley Long left, the show couldn't help but take a step down.
* I think Buffy ultimately suffered more of a split focus of the creative team, but losing Angel/Cordelia/Wesley to the spinoff and replacing them with Riley/Dawn/Spike/Tara didn't help things. Not to mention losing Seth Green to movies.
* 24's entire supporting cast was either killed off or turned evil over the course of the show until it was basically just down to Jack and Chloe.

Sticking with the topic: New York Undercover. Nice show about two NY detectives, one black, one latino, and the cases and tribulations they go through in the big apple.......and then some idiot at Fox decides to kill off half the cast, and throw in Tommy Aintgotnojob from Martin and basically fuck everything up. I admit, the fact that the show was running opposite Seinfeld meant it was on borrowed time, but still.

I can't believe there's another soul on this planet who remembers New York Undercover! I remember it was a big deal when I was in (middle? high?) school but until now I've never heard anyone reminisce about it.
On topic:
1) All the switching of Becky on Roseanne was head spinning.
2) I was too young at the time to really care about Suzanne Sommers leaving Three's Company, but when I'm watching reruns now, the eye candy factor is totally ruined for me.

That is my pick, too. That was also a weird situation too since Claudia was the one getting everyone to resign for TNT's season 5 then WB pulled the rug underneath her. The irony is I think if Crusade had gone to season 2, I think she would have replaced Gideon since he was making noise about not coming back.
The best cast change is Sheridan replacing Sinclair, God was Michael O'Hare wooden as Red Oak door. I also think that if Gillian had left in Season 9 and Reyes and Dogget had gotten a season to themselves, it would have been a better show instead shoehorning Scully and sometimes Mulder into shows that had no business being in. The MASH changes were fine, too.

Leonard Nimoy replacing Martin Landau on Mission: Impossible.
One of the biggest ones was probably replacing Valerie Harper with Sandy Duncan on what became the Hogan family. Not the best show, but rare for the star (name in the title) to be replaced and the show continue for a few years afterwards.

| #14 Posted on 3.3.12 1550.00 | Boston Legal's Cast from Season 1 and 2 being slowly cycled out and replaced until the series finale with the exception of Alan Shore, Denny Crane, and Shirley Schmidt. Nearly every replacement character with the exception of Jerry was a huge let down (and even Jerry got tiresome after awhile.)
I could have stomached it better if any of the departing cast EVER got a remotely decent send off. I was especially pissed at how they handled the departure of Brad Chase, the diametric opposite of Alan Shore, who just apparently randomly leaves the firm to be a DA after making full partner.

The fact that Charles wasn't as automatically hateable as Frank is precisely why he was a HUGE improvement. Replacing a cartoon villain with an antagonist who had actual depth and redeeming qualities made for a much better show. All three of those changes made the show much, much better.
