I think it had more to do with Turner losing controlling interest as a result of the AOL/Time Warner merger, rather than Turner giving up on WCW. For better or worse, if Ted Turner was still in the position to make the decisions at Time Warner, WCW would probably still be around...

I doubt it, because even though Turner might have had a soft spot for wrestling, I think even he would have realized after awhile that WCW was beyond saving.
Sometimes it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps in the morning.
Story goes he hated losing CNN for monetary reasons, but he hated losing WCW because he loved owning a wrestling company. If he hadn't had to answer to a board he probably would've thrown money at WCW forever.
